4WD test! GWM Tank 500 Hybrid 2024 review: Half the price of Toyota LC300 GR Sport - but is it good?

- The 2024 GWM Tank 500 Hybrid means serious business, with the seven-seat 4WD wagon having the Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series firmly in its proverbial sights. The Chinese newcomer kicks off from $66,490 drive-away, which makes it about half the price of the Japanese juggernaut's GR Sport flagship.
Yep, when it comes to value for money, there's no denying the Tank 500 Hybrid is going for the jugular, with key features including a 14.6-inch touchscreen multimedia system, full-time four-wheel drive with high and low range, and a 255kW/648Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol-electric series-parallel hybrid powertrain.
So, the question is, is the Tank 500 Hybrid half as good to drive off-road as the LC300 GR Sport, or is it better than that? In this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Marcus Craft takes the GWM off-roading to find out.

you have to drive it to believe , its a very luxurious suv compared to an everest or a prado!
Test drive over last week, it’s great!
Toyota recently has a recall on their v6 engines..metal shards in it....toyota fanboys should buy it
Those engines were made in USA, nothing to do with Australia. Cry
@@ishaqthkr that explains..
@@JettoGospel you know, it's American things😂
@@JettoGospel it seems i was wrong 🤣
If this car has a Toyota logo, you will say that it is the best car ever.
Very bias review
In Victoria, they land in Robe SA and are driven across the border to avoid the Victorian tax.
It would be, because it would come with the Toyota service and reliability package with it
No. The Tank 500 is a mediocre car. It has dangerously lousy brakes. Drinks like a sailor. Delivers power inconsistently. Has poor packaging (limited boot space).
Wish it had a V6 hybrid. Uncomfortable with just a 2L in a vehicle this size.
No local manufacturing anymore to protect so open slather for chinese tariff free in Australia, chinese vehicles banned in north America to protect local auto manufacturers
For half the price, if the reliability is more than half as good, then it may be worth it. But my concern is whether this car can endure off-road like this in the long run. It maybe easy to do a review like this for a week of testing. So please come back in 2 years time and tell us how this perform !
this thing already be sale in China for more than 2 years, now the tank 300, tank 400 and tank 500 already taken nearly 50% of 4WD off-road market in China
Isn't Toyota having problems with oil consumption in the Landcruiser 300 series?
they have been well performed in China's mountain, desert and Tibetan Plateau. You think your condition can be worse than Tibetan Plateau!😂
@@billshi6005 Not the conditions, but the unearned reputation which they have to proof outside the mainland.
@@martintokinaga5261 A new brand always have to take time to get trustworthy from a potential client or car fans like you. however, I don't think the condition difference exists, car is just car, solid or not, it can be straightly proved. after sale service should be main concer. BTW, tank 500 is the favourite and most confident car of Gwm Boss, not tank 700.
These reviewers need to learn how to turn down or turn off these driver assits.
It can be done simply in the settings
My guess is the resale value will “tank”
🙄
Yeah but your not paying that Toyota premium price to start with
@@rylancarmichael8030yeah, but it is a Great Wall, and previously they all tanked
Not a great power train. Serious off roaders love diesel.
"it's a fair bit of ugly"
None of these monstrosities are aesthetically pleasing in any way shape or form.
As a previous owner of gwm and ldv. What you will face is the poor metal treatment from factory. Early signs of rusting from beneath paintwork.
Less cargo room then a 10 year old Mitsubishi Challenger.😮
Overall we got paid to do the review of a shut box made in China that will fall apart in a couple of years.
That’s ur damn prejudice
Commy rubbish
