  • Spoiler warning. I go into everything here. But I put timestamps so you can skip over spoilers for any of the games.
I really tried to cut this down. But to be fair, I am essentially reviewing five games in one video here. There's a lot to say. Especially when I'm getting in to story stuff. Which I had to. It's so important to how I feel about Splatoon.
A bit off-topic, but anyone remember back when Off the Hook was first announced? Everyone was loving Marina and making fun of Pearl. I don't know if things have turned around since then. But I'm gonna say, I was always on team Pearl. I love her rambunctious energy. Dare I say, she's one of my favorite Nintendo characters ever.
Something I realized I should have mentioned about Splatoon 3, it has way fewer bad missions compared to Octo Expansion. I can only think of one I didn't like. So while the highs are not as high, the lows are not as low either. It's more consistent.

real, it genuinely never clicked before bc I was like "oh I like collectathons so I like these" but replaying splatoon 1 and trying to get the sunken scrolls is such a slog. I was initially disappointed when they removed them in octo expansion but it was undoubtedly the right decision.

Speaking of Splatoon story modes and their stories, have you tried out the Octo Expansion retranslation mod or checked out the European Splatoon 1 localization? (The EU Localization is a much more direct translation and closer to the JP Script)
I highly recommend checking them out as it's very interesting to experience with the bits the devs wrote that were lost in localization, especially with some issues that the North American localized version has since they had a lot of liberty with the localization and one of the creators of the mod (Rassicas) has a channel dedicated talking about the story and worldbuilding of Splatoon translating and contextualizing every bit and it's really good!

In my opinion one of the major things people often overlook is the fact that the in game single player is supposed to serve as a semi tutorial for new players. And I know it’s not an excuse for like making a bland single player but like idk how octo expansion would be if I just picked up splatoon for the first time. The like dlc and shi in my opinion is when they have the best chance to try harder or different things like octo expansion. Not saying everyone but so many people that review or talk about them I feel like always overlook that aspect, like when I played splatoon 1 I loved the single player because before I played it I was really bad (I was like 10 so) 🙋

Dude foreeeeal with OE’s finale. The prior “rival” fights in the form of octoling encounters didn’t really feel like fights if you had the feel down - their openings are pretty easy to take advantage of, if you even need to since half the time you can tank what damage they dish out and just plow through them regardless (not to mention they’re nameless goons). Agent 3 backs up hard when pressured and spams you with subs/specials that you actually need to be aware of in a close quarters setting. The devs successfully made them feel like a legend living up to their namesake (and a fucking nightmare with the extra fight) despite only getting the spotlight once before in the original campaign. One little touch that makes the very final fight in the story extra special though, and I’m kinda surprised I still haven’t seen anyone really mention it, is the meta connection that it has with unlocking playable octolings in 2. It makes too much sense that Agent 8’s final mission and introduction to the surface world is their very first “turf war.” Maybe most already get the connection and just don’t think much of it, but that makes it extra cool to me. Having spent your entire time underground, hearing of the “promised land,” and the underlying tones of acceptance after years of hostility - amplified by Cuttlefish’s history and Marina’s dynamic - add to the stakes and excitement of finally reaching the top and taking out one last obstacle by participating in the most popular common activity for inklings. You get the shot of an octoling in Inkopolis for the first time as they’re overwhelmed by everything, but they’ve already proven themselves worthy of being here just by showing up. Sorry, you gushed and so I just followed suit. And yes, OE even has the best readings with the chat logs PLUS the mem cake haikus. The charm is unmatched. Shoutout Pearl’s demo tape
I echo pretty much all your sentiments on Side Order. The game did become a cake walk pretty quickly but then there’s some appeal in seeing just how fast I can clear certain floors. I’ll get a series of record times with a busted charger build thinking “well that’s my ceiling I’m not beating that” only to create an equally busted dualies build soon after and somehow clear even faster. But even that was admittedly short-lived; it can only go for so long before you realize the only way to beat times on splat zone floors for instance is to try and initially claim the zone as fast as possible since most become easy to guard with a decent build. Making the game tougher by weakening yourself is something I’m just not down for. Also man, at least let me skip the repetitive dialogue in the elevator more efficiently. I get it, Pearl was scared fighting Marina. Don’t make me spam the A button to get through the ten boxes explaining that every single time. Another minor side complaint for this side order, I just fully completed all the chip logs and FUCK the extra dodge roll and brella cool down chips in particular. Neither of those weapons get priority in those respective tones and even with the chip bias hack off it took me several runs to max them out. Not that the logs for those are even remotely worth it but goddamnit my completionist monkey brain had to fill em out and get all those useless chip badges to see if there’s anything at all extra for doing so (spoiler: there isn’t)

    • @a-ramenartist9734
      @a-ramenartist9734 Před 3 měsíci +3

btw chip bias only affects the natural chip bias of a weapon (the two little icons on the corner of the palette), and doesn't help at all with getting more of a chip you already have. Kind of confusing but yeah, that's why it's impossible to get the chips you want with brella and dualies (and also splatling and basically any weapon) if you have chip bias hacks turned on.

Love to see Pariah branching out (even if I do prefer his Sonic content)
Edit: Watching further into the video I actually find it interesting that Pariah mentions that having collectibles causes him to look around for them and break the pace because in some sonic games (specifically Sonic Dimensions and other boost games) I find that upper paths do the same and I turn around to go back and hit a launch ring or homing attack chain to upper paths because I want to hit that upper path (again this is less of a problem in classic games or adventure games for me in particular for whatever reason)

    • @mrhalfsaid1389
      @mrhalfsaid1389 Před 3 měsíci +2

I find in the adventure games people do this less because with the longer less linear at times level design you want to just finish the level unless you are trying to find stuff. Just what I've gleamed from my experience with classic/adventure games

    • @Sonicfan-wi6oy
      @Sonicfan-wi6oy Před 3 měsíci +2

@@mrhalfsaid1389True, also the boost games tend to have more clearly delineated alternate paths
Like I said it's more about launch rings and homing attack chains than it is about getting platforming right and using the physics
Furthermore, the boost games make it a lot easier to about turn on something compared to the adventure and especially the classic games (which makes intuitive sense since Inertia is a much bigger deal in those game) which makes this less of a thing you want to avoid

41:15 The first 2 minutes of the song are actually a remix of the "Level Clear" jingle. The whole game has been physiology conditioning the player to associate these notes with the joy you get from clearing a level, so that's why it slaps so hard!
Then the final minute is a remix of the first song Pearl and Marina wrote together in lore. In what might be their last minute before thr world ends, they decide to play a song that's super important to each other. It's so cute 🥰

It's surprising seeing someone playing Splatoon without using gyro aim, you can be a LOT faster and more accurate with gyro & sticks compared to just sticks. That goes for all shooters too, gyro improves control a TON, it's like the difference between using a d-pad and an analog stick for fine 3D movement. I highly recommend checking out Nerrel's videos on gyro, it takes some getting used to but it improves feel and flow tenfold.

So, pertaining to Side Order and it's difficulty, I do agree in some aspects such as the player becoming such a war machine once you start getting upgrades for your character and even Pearl towards the point where the DLC can become easy. However, the difficulty of this DLC (or lack thereof) mainly stems from player choice and how they decide to playthru Side Order. For example, me and my friends decided to not upgrade the amount of lives we have nor give ourselves Continues on a given run, which did stabilize the difficulty for us and kept a sense of enjoyment towards the difficulty personally. Granted, do I think this is the best way to handle difficulty in games? Ehhh, maybe, maybe not, but the choice is there. It's nice to have some choice in how difficult you want this DLC to be outside of the difficulty of the floors you're given. I do think that the DLC could've had more variety tho from enemies to levels; hell, even in aspects of difficulty as well to what can be adjusted! But for what it is, I'm content with this DLC

I have seen it a lot with multiple stars in Bowser levels which tend to be linear, or on kaizo hacks that also have the tendency

This was such a fun video to watch and to compare the differences between the various singleplayer offerings of Splatoon so far! I agree with pretty much all of your comments, although I'd say I wasn't as let down by Splatoon 3's Alterna singleplayer but maybe I didn't have as high of expectations as you did (although, admittedly, mine were also fairly high). I think that playing all the campaigns back to back like you did probably led to your comment about having a future campaign without a giant ending; I feel there is a notable difference between playing each campaign as they came out years apart, rather than playing it all back to back in a short period.

The splatoon devs are also the animal crossing devs and they have a track record of rushing out games without finishing them and after like 2 years you can say it is complete. This happened with splatoon 2, acnh, and to an extent splatoon 3. I just hope whatever comes next they take their time with it because that is what they did with octo expansion and it turned out phenomenal. They really are incredable devs and probably my favorite one at nintendo and just wan what they do next to be the best it can be without feeling rushed and finishing post launch.

I think than in general that is something about roguelikes. You eventually unlock so broken stuff and you learn the workings of the game so much that you can make a pretty overbroken build if you know how to do it and get lucky for the necessary stuff to show up. But yeah, the automatically generated challenges in those games are usually more varied than in here.
Also I thought that you were going to talk about the secondary lore things in Return of the Mammalians and Side Order like with Octo Valley, Cannon and Expansion. I find that the whole stuff of Alterna being something that humans tried to use to keep life, and the rocket being what finished them off, but also that the place is the origin for the whole current sea life in the surface is pretty neat. Also how in Side Order there is stuff like Parallel Canon was modeled off of Agent 3 because they were hired by Marina to defend that virtual place, but ended up being consumed by it and Order repurposed them by mass making security guards, that is pretty neat.

Octo Expansion was so unbelievably good I couldn't help but be disapointed with everything 3 had to offer. I haven't played the side order yet, but from what I've seen it's just a lot less ambitious and creative than Octo Expansion was. Side Order honestly feels like a thing that should have been in S3 from launch, with some other more interesting story campaign for the DLC. A lot of people theorized about Splatoon 3's story mode being open world in the vast expansive desert, and it feels like a huge missed opportunity that they never actually did anything interesting with the desert setting

Personally I very much disagree with how good Octo Expansion is. Maybe I just prefer a slower-paced and easier time in games but wowza... Octo Expansion was hair-pulling with its frustration! Splatoon has definitely become one of my Top 3 Nintendo series. It has such a fun, fledged out world.
The Splatoon Team are clearly passionate about this series and it’s world.
I mean music in this game is played by fictional bands that all have their own stories across all 3 games.
Salmon run being presented as this shady but successful business and it having an impact on Splatoon 3’s story is very cool.
I can literally point to so many things that this game does in terms of world building and how it’s all very well done.
I appreciate when a game does stuff like this. Have consistent world building that adds to it’s setting. It’s fun.

I do actually like the concept of reskinning enemies in side order to add more variety. The whole story of side order is about trying to rehabilitate the sanitized octolings and give them back their memories, so maybe they could implement that story element in having, every 10 floors, a different enemy type added from the memories of some random octarian. Having salmonid bosses like scrappers, grillers, flyfish, etc. (considering octarians get the majority of their electricity from salmon eggs so their societies are interlinked), general octarian enemies like the flying bomb dudes, the ball guys, the scuicide bombers, the stamps or even the flooder. That would add a lot of variety to distinguish each run, having it defined by a certain enemy that kind of invaded each run.
Personally I enjoyed fighting through the campaign over and over, but I kind of wish we had more weapons to play, like double, considering not only the weapon variety can probably cover 2 distinct weapons per class (like maybe an h-3 for shooters, an s-blast for blasters, a tenta brella for brellas, tetra dualies for dualies, snipewriter for chargers, etc.) but more importantly it would give us more variation in the types of runs we can do with certain weapons because of chip biases. Of course you can simply turn chip biases off, but it's still limiting, like what if you really wanted to do a drone focused build but don't like splatlings or brellas, or what if you want to do a specific run with a specific weapon but the chip bias isn't ideal for that (like dodge rolls plus rush stats on dualies, except dualies doesn't have mobility bias). Plus adding these extra weapons would be super easy to do, since it's just a reskin and slightly lower stats.
I think the main thing I got from this is how much I just want there to be more to side order, hope they expand upon this greatly in some way next game.
Oh yeah also one more thing I was really hoping the parallel canon boss would show up in some danger levels, but they didn't. Missed opportunity entirely

1:20 Pretty sure the dev team behind Splatoon is the same team behind Animal Crossing actually, or at least a good amount of it.
I think overall each story mode did what it meant to do - but overall the weakest one in my mind is Splatoon 2's Octo Canyon.
The original Splatoon's Octo Valley was really an introduction to the series. It set up the world, some of the lore, and even hinted at some darker elements of the story that future games would expand on. The Mario Galaxy vibes were very highly intentional - Galaxy was a great game in it's own right, and the A to B level structure with one main gimmick that gets iterated on through the level is very classic Nintendo game design. It makes for a surefire way to teach players the game, which is perfect as a tutorial mode for the Multiplayer - something all Splatoon base-game singleplayer campaigns get right, actually. They teach the fundamentals of the game in a low-stakes environment, being a great way to get into the series (and the motion controls, which many will say are superior to twin-sticks... use whichever you like best, but if you haven't already tried the motion controls, I'd recommend giving them a go in the singleplayer modes. If you've grown up with twin-stick shooter games or just simply prefer not using them, it's totally fine, I just always recommend trying them out. If PC games had the option to use motion controls though, I'd use them.)
Splatoon 2's feels like a more padded-out version of 1's, and it's worst part has to be replaying each stage for 100%. The final boss is also a straight-up downgrade from the original. Having the Hero weapons for multiplayer is pretty nice though, and something I really miss in 3.
Speaking of, Splatoon 3 capitalized off the success of Octo Expansion in a good way. I think it's the format I'd like to see going forward in the series, though maybe with some more classic stages thrown in the mix. The ending was a bit cheesy, but the continuation of the lore was great. Very bittersweet ending, especially as it seems it might be the ending of this saga of Splatoon.
I love that OE makes Agent 3 an actual character in the world - it really gives players of the first game a sense of legacy. That's you! Being an absolute legend! And then RotM made you Captain! And since the time jumps between games mirrors the time between releases in real life, Agent 3 (now Captain 3) has grown up alongside you! Agent 3 in the original is around 14 or 15 years old - in Splatoon 3, they're around 21-22. This means anyone born in 200 (like me) has an extra layer of connection to 3 - you're the same age, and that really drives home a sense of nostalgia for me. It might be dumb, sure, but that's a small part of why I love this series so much. It's changed a bit, grown in some ways, alongside me, but it's still the same at its core. Even when it's a rougelite in Side Order (which, by the way has been my favorite genre of game recently, so I love that Splatoon gave it a try! Maybe a little strange though.)
Sorry for the crazy-long essay of a comment, but I just wanted to share why these games are so special to me. Great video, very well done. And thanks for taking me through memory lane.

As a roguelike enthusiast, I went into Side Order expecting baby's first roguelike since it's Nintendo... and that's exactly what I got. I definitely agree that it's very lacking in overall content. My biggest complaint other than the lack of gameplay variety is how difficulty is handled. In most roguelites, making yourself stronger between runs is expected, but after you beat the boss for the first time you can crank up the difficulty of the game itself using other systems (like Heat vs the Mirror of Night in Hades). But here you have to WEAKEN YOURSELF and REMOVE ITEMS FROM THE RNG POOL, which feels terrible. It would be nice to have "anti-hacks" that you can buy from Smollusk or even Cipher in the post-game that crank up the difficulty of the spire itself, like adding boss gimmicks, removing the "broken-armor" state so that you're more fragile like in multiplayer, making Rigorous floors more common, making Danger levels more common, making certain danger levels constantly active, adding time limits to objectives, or even making objectives take longer to clear.
And while I'm not opposed to having a final boss victory lap, it feels really unearned if you beat the game on like your 3rd run. Most roguelikes save the extra phase for after you do a really hard extra objective. It would have made more sense to me to have you beat the game with ALL the palettes to get the bonus phase, like you're systematically weakening Order only to finish him off with the final palette (which makes it more special because of whose palette it is).

Honestly I think Side Order might be peak Splatoon right now! It's nice to have a single player challenge that is GENUINELY CHALLENGING and I can replay it over and over without getting bored. While I LOVE Octo Expansion in every way, I will say that it's not as replayable, because I start to remember missions by their names and sometimes that can take away my motivation to play because it's a mission I particularly dislike. Anyone who remembers Girl Power Station knows exactly what I'm talking about! I like Girl Power Station but I'll admit it's annoying to get thru after losing a bunch of times.
When playing Side Order I really like how you can customize your experience! You can make it as ruthless or as easy as you want! I still haven't beaten a no hack run yet. I'm trying to do a 2 life run with no other hacks and it's been stupid hard! But I love it! I keep coming back for more because each time I manage to climb back to where I was or a little higher each time I fail. Once you get to the top and beat it it's a really rewarding experience!
Although I have to say the story and lore in Octo Expansion has yet to be topped! Side Order kinda disappointed me in the story department, but the gameplay experience is just slightly more fun than OE.

not every nintendo game is made by the same team of people, they're split up into many divisions. Like splatoon and fire emblem are not developed by the same people, they may share many resources, and at times staff move between them, but they're distinct in the way that disney has a bunch of studios that are all technically disney but still operate a little differently (although maybe to a lesser extent in the case of nintendo since their divisions aren't really branded)

My issue with splatoon mostly comes from the multiplayer. It has a lot of stupid issues that really SHOULD be easy fixes but just are never fixed, the weapons are painfully unbalanced, usually from certain weapons being absurdly underpowered usually from underpowered sub weapons or extremely unfitting specials for the weapon, i mean look at base splattershot pro in s3, what possible benefit does it get from LINE MARKER of all things, splatoon could definitely survive easily as a purely solo game and i find quite often that this is the one thing that actually makes me buy these games rather than the selling point. Real shame

Ah, I enjoy pearl also as she is one of my favorites also. After listening to this video, I have to agree that octo expansion is the best the team has done. Side order is good but it does not warrant the twelve time to complete it, I am only doing for the octo shot replica.
The segment when you said you can just place side order as a rotation of Splatoon standard rotation is how I have been playing the game mode, ha ha. As multiple in one setting is heavily draining and mind numbing. I have played my first time with side order with no perks / hacks and it was an enjoyable challenge, however after words I just use pearl to play the title for me as I am not great with majority of the weapons.
The single player in three is better then the previous two, especially if the ending that you made up would had been amazing if the team had made that possible but I guess that official ending is still good however, I felt the same way but it was still great nonetheless. Two campaign was just awful in my opinion as it was just too much padding and the simplicity of the first one was much better in my opinion, especially the final boss battle. Octavio was better in the original then it's sequel.

@@best_mate456 I’ll be honest, Chief, how Splatoon 3’s story wraps up is… kind of ass.
First things first, a quick clarification, I actually think gameplay-wise, the campaign mostly succeeds at being the best in the franchise (not counting Side Order since that’s more of it’s own thing), the level design and distribution is easily the some of the most varied in the series, the boss fights are… a bit middle of the road, admittedly, but hey, I like the Mario Sunshine reference as much as everybody else (and this is coming from someone who never played Mario Sunshine lmao), in all fairness, the first half of the story is really effective and good at building a sense of intrigue for players, especially with the fakeout intro, and I do think it’s fairly nice how you can choose to depict New Agent 3 (as utterly stupid as that name is) as an Inkling OR an Octoling. Lays some pretty nice groundwork for interesting fan material, especially when you take Lil’ Buddy into account, but I’ll get to him later.
I’ve got some other negatives I need to talk about first.
For starters, the fact that the shit with Deep Cut essentially boils down to a misunderstanding is disappointing AF. At least, they have the opportunity to clarify they’re good-hearted that way, I guess, but it just makes those fights from before have no payoff and all of sudden it’s “oh we’re just a team now”.
Mr. Grizz also feels underwhelming as a villain in execution, primarily bc of his somewhat ridiculous design, and because of that mammalianization doesn’t feel NEARLY as threatening as sanitization, especially taking into account that usually speaking, inkling/octolings just turn into hairballs when they touch the fuzz.
The moment with Cuttlefish turning into an actual Cuttlefish is weird bc I simultaneously like it and dislike it at the same time, I dislike it for it being a disservice to the already flawed story (pretty obvious reason I know), however I also love it solely because of how utterly hilariously it’s played out. Seriously, you can’t tell me you at least chuckled when that moment happened.
The boss fights themselves, for the most part are just fine, but I actually like Mr. Grizz’s is the most solid ironically enough, or at least, the most fun out of all the boss fights. What happens mid-fight however, is honestly the worst part of the story, not bc DJ Octavio saves New 3, not bc of the Calamari Inkantation 3MIX that puts the Spicy version from S2 to ABSOLUTE SHAME, but bc of what happens to Lil’ Buddy.
All of a sudden, they start talking about “three lights of evolution” or whatever the fuck they were saying while a blue light envelops the little shit, and suddenly he becomes a giant mega-salmon, which makes approximately ZERO licks of sense. It’s most likely something you never would’ve heard about otherwise, especially since not even the SUNKEN FUCKING SCROLLS talk about those lights in detail, making the moment in question feel like a complete asspull. And Y’know what I’m talking about, right? The scrolls that are supposed to provide a natural sense of lore of worldbuilding for this series?
Which actually leads me into another issue, most of the actually interesting lore comes from the Alterna Logs this time around, and not the sunken scrolls. Which sounds fine on its own, but compounded with that absolutely braindead story ending. It really makes the scrolls seem shallow in comparison to the logs, which I guess makes sense, since the logs are technically much older than the scrolls, but still.
Even after you beat Grizz, nothing afterward feels like you’ve accomplished something or gained any knowledge, it just goes straight back to the status quo complete with Mr. Grizz STILL SOMEHOW RUNNING HIS FUCKING BUSINESS AFTER TRYING TO DESTROY THE WORLD.
I don’t care if there are theories suggesting Lil’ Judd may have secretly taken over, the game still doesn’t pay any proper mind to this glaring issue, which is a massive problem (and this is coming from someone who fucking LOVES Salmon Run).
That’s not even getting to this other question, How does Mr. Grizz being an actual Bear even work? Like think about this for a second, how can he speak, how can he think, how can he plot revenge against everybody when he’s a FUCKING BEAR?!
So yeah, those are all my issues with S3’s main story, leading to an ultimately disappointing experience. Compared to the simple yet still effective charm of S1’s campaign, this one falls surprisingly flat in comparison. Believe me, I’m surprised I ended up giving it the edge too. But, the second half of S3’s story utterly demolishes what the first half was building up, and it just ends up feeling like a mess of random happenings vaguely resembling Octo Expansion until the credits roll.
I guess I should be happy Lil’ Buddy didn’t turn into a Salmonling at the end, and at the very least, it is absolutely better than S2’s main campaign’s approach of just telling the exact same story as the first game, only this time, Callie’s haphazardly tacked onto the stakes because reasons.
Hopefully now you can understand why I (for the most part) dislike Splatoon 3’s main campaign to the point where I had to give the first game’s campaign the edge in overalls regards.

I think you bring an excellent point about how we do get to spend time and know Pearl and Marina more and thus form a nice connection with them. Which of course adds to the finale being as awesome as it is.
And objectively yeah, we don't really get to learn much about Deep Cut from the context of the story mode. I feel it isn't as much of a shortcoming of them being antagonists and more so they don't utilize that to maybe have there be more interactions in the hub where they mess with your progress or talk shit, or maybe even in the missions when you go through the first time. However, for as cool as the final of Octo Expansion is, I firmly disagree from a taste perspective that Calamari Inkantion 3mix is weaker than Ebb and Flow. Differences in taste, so we will leave it at that.
I dig the designs of Deep Cut and absolutely adore the cultural aspects that go in Shiver, Frye, and Big Man, both with what lore is there and especially the presentation of the Splatfests. I love it more than the previous ones as it just feels like this cultural celebration on top of being a concert. I absolutely vibe with that.

I personally thought the finale of S3's campaign was fine and appropriately epic, but then again, I've not read/watched stories with epic space battles like you have! My bigger gripe was the entirely unfocused plot and like you mentioned, pitiful focus on Deep Cut - when this is THEIR game and the DLC was monopolized from the start by Off the Hook. What are they gonna do, parasitize the next game's campaign?!
The plot goes from the fakeout of a traditional Splatoon story - to the setting of Alterna and the ancient humans' base explaining the origin of marine sentience, then suddenly throwing in Deep Cut as bandits in name that just serve as bosses, then throwing in Mr Grizz as an afterthought with absolutely no relation to Deep Cut. Some players don't even catch the bare link back to the start of the game, that Grizz stole the Great Zapfish for his rocket.
I kinda don't think Callie, Marie, or Agent 3 had to be part of the campaign at all. Their inclusion and role once you get to Alterna is the most baffling part for me.
They could have had Mr Grizz as the shady but helpful guy-on-the-radio guiding you like in salmon run, which would already set up his appearance and importance in the story REVOLVING AROUND MAMMALIANS much better. You'd fight Deep Cut to collect parts of the rocket for him unknowingly, Cuttlefish would reestablish contact with you to start to reveal Grizz's true motives, and Deep Cut puts grudges aside and becomes your radio help for the rest of the campaign to catch up to Grizz in space and stop him. Blah, something like that.
Another small letdown I don't think you mentioned for Side Order was also the significance of the Mysterious Company. Though I agree in hindsight it's good not to repeat ideas so they do not become stale, because the Kamabo company turned out to be so significant to OE's story, there were lots of theories made about the infinity logo plastered about the setting of the new DLC in relation to who or what would be the mysterious antagonist of the story - speaking of which, was a major question with a disappointing answer, imo.
There were popular theories about a possible connection to Toni Kensa, a fictional company in the game's universe that makes both weapons and clothes for the multiplayer mode with a specific color scheme that matched the DLC's aesthetic - grayscale and red - with the multiplayer mode even adding a post-release special that seemed to tie into the DLC by turning enemy players' screens grayscale and uh, unintentionally triggering people with audiovisual sensitivities; a mechanic the devs KEPT on a smaller scale even after backlash.
There were also nonsensical stakes set up for SO's story that could have been easily demonstrated by showing the main hub slowly being repopulated by your efforts with each completed palette - but the palettes being parts of existing major characters' souls outside the DLC which had no effect on them was also.. strange.
Nintendo always puts gameplay first and story second, so all these flaws and nitpicks aren't really that surprising... but I will continue to hope for more crazy and intriguing settings like OE and Alterna with more focus on the characters and world like OE excelled at.

kinda strongly disagree with the 3 spoilers segment. i think you assumed too much and had way too many expectations and that clouded your judgement. the ending of of splatoon 3 is just as if not more over the top than the ending of octo expansion

It's kind of funny how you wonder at the end about having the dev team behind Splatoon work on another series... because the other series they work on is Animal Crossing. Suuuch a different type of game!

Ironically, you get WAY more Prlz with a full monochromatic pallet than you do with having Risky Prlz on at 3x the reward.. Meaning you can have all your hacks on and still get paid WAY more than having Risky Prlz on at 3x
The only way to trully take advantage of Risky Rewards, is to do a monochromatic pallet along with it.
Only a massacist would be up for the challenge

I'm a bit disappointed in Side Order since you see pretty much everything it has to offer after a couple hours, and the rest is just unlocking as much junk as you feel like or imposing self challenges

I'd like to think the reason why Octo Canyon is so similar to Octo Valley is because a lot more of us skipped the Wii U. Eff that console. The Switch was Nintendo's chance to get Splatoon in front of a much wider audience.

I think it’s more because Splatoon 2 had a quick development cycle to release within the first few months of the Switch launch. 3 was in development for longer so they were able to make the single player more unique.

And the thing that makes octo expansion better is cuttlefish sucks. He’s racist towards octarians but he’s changed by the end. Like this is character development. People are capable of change and this is a game that acknowledges that, instead of how a lot of stories are trying to ignore that assholes can become good people.

There's extra depth there! Cuttlefish and DJ Octavio used to be friends, before the old Turf Wars. It's in the Splatoon 1 collectibles. He was betrayed by Octos, and learned to trust them again. So good.

I know this is your thing ng, just play through the levels, but you cant really complain about not having eggs to upgrade your gear when you dont collect eggs or kill enemies.
In Splatoon 1 I understand. Took me alot of playthroughs just to have enough eggs to upgrade everything.
But in Splatoon 2, the amount of eggs you can get per level is insane. You can easily upgrade everything's ng in a single playthrough if you want to.

I liked the video but for the splatoon 3 story mode you wouldn’t stop comparing it to Octo expansion. I’m watching the video for a review of the story mode itself, not “splatoon 3 story mode compared to Octo expansion” it’s like every sentence you said was just “this was good, but it was so much better in Octo expansion”

36:44 quick correction, pearl wasn't shocked that marina was an octoling as in the species, she was shocked that marina was in the octarian army. it's a pretty common misconception thanks to some iffy wording in an OE chatlog. it makes a lot more sense for pearl to go "holy shit my partner was an active member of a terrorist group" than "omg she's not an inkling?!?" lol
