On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas and Rich are going over a topic we get asked about so often: recording AMP1 direct and with BluBOX! So we’ll have an AMP1 Silver Edition, the Mercury Edition, and the Iridium Edition, and we’ll show you how the three sound from their own direct outs, then with the different options the BluBOX offers - and finally with a standard guitar cab micced up.
Of course, this is also the perfect opportunity for Thomas to explain some of his miccing techniques: close miccing, additional mics, and room miccing.
We’ll compare and contrast the different methods, discussing the benefits and challenges of each of these individual techniques… and we’ll try and help you find out which is the best for you and your unique needs!
Thomas also has two cool interviews to share, with BluGuitar endorsers and friends Ben Granfelt and Eric de Jong (who most of you will know better as DutchGuitarDude!). Ben and Eric are both vastly experienced AMP1 users, and they will explain their stories about their work with AMP1 over the years, with particular focus on their shared love of the amp’s direct out recording options.

1:26:22 heya Thomas! great episode! you almost had it right with my studiotrick for massive punchy guitarlines in the chat. yes it does align the transients, which also sounds cool, BUT this wouldn't solve the problem of hopping around in the stereo-image. now you can ALSO align the energy-levels AND the transients. meaning:track1dynamic levels are like"HElllooo" and track2dynamics are like "heLLOOO". you have to choose the master track, and the programm takes the dynamics of the track1 and renders it to track2, so both are "HElllooo" AND the transients are aligned. ONLY this way you have two original takes and you can spread them hard L and R, without any wobbling and its mindblingly punchy! all the best (tschimi) marco
Yeah, I understand both aspects: timing and volume… when both are aligned (in sync) then only the color is talking in the mix, not that bouncing from the doubling…,
I come from the days before something like that was possible…so I had to work on my performance to be in sync as much as possible…
That was always a nice challenge, with their own results… will try your tip, as is might sound superior for certain things,..

@@BluGuitar thank you too for your channel and the amp1 - i'm mainly interested to get the most fat fenderish clean sounds out of it, so this episode was interesting for me as also erics assessment, why we both like the rec. out of the amp1! ps:this studiotrick, unfortunately only synchro arts with vocalign and revoice are doing this really and they are pricey. you will not find any good working alternatives, , so, not so easy to try this out. cheers

@@BluGuitar Any ballpark on the pricing for the AmpX? I'm looking hard at the Iridium, but the idea of an AmpX with onboard effects really appeals to me.

I have a vintage Fender Bassman in my studio, canI connect it using Rec Out?
Or will it unbalance the sound?

If I understand you right, you want to play the AMP1 into your Bassman …
You could do a few things like using the preamp of AMP1 (on fX-send) and then use the Bassman as a poweramp with more tube stages. It sounds okay, but you should try the AMP1 with all its options by itself. Then you’ll find out that such a combination is cool, but just for some special sound. So it’s not needed to combine the AMP1 with a “real old school tube amp” to make it better. But there’s always room for experimentation!!!

If you go out from direct out to a recording system do you need a speaker cable? Or just any cable?
Just a standard guitar cable is all you need!
Hello Thomas and all Bluguitar folks, I think it will be the best place to ask this question. In that video you hooked up the cabsim to the 16ohm speaker output, was there a loadbox in-between ? Or 16ohm output will do fine with cabsims ?
Jut to give co text I have the first version of Amp1, tried to hook it up to a cab sim with speaker outs and it never worked, there was clearly a much stronger signal.
The only option that worked ok was to connect the cab sim to send out.
You can use the AMP1 without a load or speaker. So you can connect the cab sim directly to the speaker out. If your cabsim doesn’t have a pad function to reduce the level (like torpedo cab m) you need a DI box that also reduces the level with a pad function. No big deal get a passive one from like Thomann
@@BluGuitarThanks for that tip Thomas&Team . I've got myself aN omnitronic lh-06l ( passive di-box), used it with a AMT chameleon cabsim. When Amp1 SIM was switched on , the signal seemed to be ok, although the master volume had to be around 1. When I switched off Amp1, there was a loud buzz coming out of the headphones. I would assume it's due to the passive Di box.
Pad was -40dB, speaker out was 8 ohm.
I want to buy the amp1 either Mercury or iridium but I don't know which one is best for bass guitar or even if it is good for bass guitar I'm very interested in this could you please help me out thank you very much!!!!!

Hey Thomas! Greetings from India! I just wanted to know that if I connected the speaker output to my recording interface, is it okay if I use an instrument cable? And like you mentioned in another comment here, do I have to pad it down on my interface?
This is assuming that I use IRs in my DAW for the cabinet simulation, but I still want to harness the full power of the Amp 1.
You should use a DI with pad (-20dB) on the speaker out, then you get an unfiltered signal for your DAW to use with your IRs

Using only rec out, can you use the full extent of the master knob? Can you damage the device if you go past 5?
