    I am a very strong advocate of eating like our great grandparents. It was a way of eating (and quality of food) that was proven to work over thousands of years.

    I have been collecting and grinding my own file for 60 years. To use for thickening it should be collected and dried just before the leaves are fully formed in the spring.
    Roots can be harvested any time, but have more intense flavor if dug in the winter. The flavor is concentrated in the inner bark. I scrub, then scrape the outer bark, before peeling the inner bark for drying out of the sun.

    I think it is illegal now to sell sassafras root. However, file powder for file gumbo is sassafras leaf. I think the reasons for its ban were political not medical (a can of beer is more threat to your liver than sassafras. Duke 2002) Safrole is used in many products and drugs and that is why it is controlled. However, the trees are very abundant in the South and very easy to come by.

    I heard old Justin Wison,, the cajun chef, say that the leaves are only good for picking a certain time of the year. November or maybe it was Feb, 🤷🏼‍♀️ Anyway.. im.glad I stumbled here to ask a real Botanists opinion.. Thank Dean 😀👍✌

    Great Vid Green Deane, one thing you didn't mention. If you rub a sassafras leave on your skin it will repel mosquitos and other biting insects. Further if you drink sassafras tea regularly you will have this natural insect repellent eminating from your pores and be much less bothered by the skeeters chiggers and such. I can personally attest to the drinking of the tea helping but I've never tested the leaf to skin method.

      Are you harvesting it yourself or getting it from someone locally that's selling it ?...because it's almost impossible to find ,unless you see it somewhere and get the root yourself.
      I used to drink it as the kid when it was sold in a local health food store.. then of course they took it off the market .

    While I like and respect science and empiricism I have lived long enough to know that experts can use science to be dogmatic and very wrong. Ancel Keyes and our hysteria about eating fat is an excellent example. Dr. James Duke showed in 2002 that safrole was essentially hamless in small amounts. By the way, there is old but good research that shows those who drink sassafras tea suffer far less colds than others.

  • @EatTheWeeds
    @EatTheWeeds  Před 14 lety +2

    @APBiologyNerd a 2002 study by the Dr. Duke shows that the safrole in a can of rootbeer was/is less cancer-causing than the alcohol in a can of beer. The rat study was a pretext in that safrole was being used in the 60s to induce abortion which were illegal then.

    It grows naturally in Eastern North America, Texas to Ontario. However, you can plant some and they will grow in California. I have no idea how commercially made products differ. There is only one species of sassafras so any sassafras is sassafras.

      Find it in the summer when it is in full leaf, then tie a ribbon or mark it in some way. That way you can harvest in winter when sap is in roots.

    Yes but.... that was a political decision not a medical one per se. The amount of safrole in a can of root beer was less cancer causing than the alcohol in a can of beer. Duke, 2002, showed the ban was a farce from a cancer point of view. However, in large doses it was used back then to induce abortions which were illegal then. And that is why it was banned. The cancer element was a scare tactic to get the legislation passed.

    I dont know if there is a plant that will actually IMPROVE eyesight.. once its bad it seems to stay that way, unfortunately. But you could look up foods good for eye health to try and stop it from getting much worse. Yes but you also need healthy fats the brain and the whole neurological system need healthy fats good fats to stay healthy and that includes the optic nerve it's very important that's why I often will eat three soft boiled eggs I make some toast I butter it and then cut it into strips and you just dip it into the eggs it's also good idea to add fresh cracked black pepper I say fresh cracked not the kind that's already a powder because an ayurvedic medicine which is thousands of years old black pepper when it is fresh and has the enzymes will help make sure that some of the important nutrients and minerals are absorbed into the body because sometimes they cannot easily be absorbed for example the body cannot easily absorbed curcumin from turmeric... but it becomes at least 1000 times more bioavailable with fresh cracked black pepper so you might want to think about having the soft boiled eggs regularly as well as having raw milk buy raw milk I mean grass-fed cows no hormones not homogenized and especially not pasteurized meaning not boiled rule of thumb that which reverses aging of the skin reverses aging of the brain that was reverses aging and the Brain reverses aging of the skin ; hence the Brain /Beauty connection .
      You should go to some of the channels that talk about these natural healers one is the superfoods Evolution Channel there's also the Nyishar Channel.
      There's also Butterfly Pea Tea , botanical name Clitoria Ternatea.. which is a beautiful blue flower on a vine similar to the Blue Morning Glory put maybe four five six of those flower buds and let it steep for at least 20 minutes.
      That's another thing, when it comes to herbs and herbal teas most Americans don't know you need to let them steep for at least 20 minutes.
      You might want to increase your vitamin C but don't do this just threw lemons if you have an Indian or Indian Pakistani Grocers near you then you are very lucky because most of them sell amla amla is also called Indian Gooseberry and its fruit has at least 30 times more vitamin C than lemons or oranges of course it is sour tasting it usually comes in a powder or a liquid but if you could grow them ..that would be wonderful.
      The reason why vitamin C is so important is because it has what are called donor cells anything that I've mentioned here can be looked up on the internet as well as CZcams also please look into your microgreens any of them like your Sprouts but especially broccoli sprouts please look into them there are very powerful healer and usually don't cost much dr. Rhonda Patrick here on CZcams shows you how you can grow them wheatgrass is another one.
      If you can find or grow the black Chinese wolfberry it is much much much more powerful than the reddish-pink goji berry that so many people believe in.
      I had wonderful results with reversing aging with that but I can't afford it I'm really struggling and have health problems which brings me to another thing a lot of these healers that I named are so powerful that when there are working you can end up in a lot of pain aches and pains and feeling quite ill because if you have any pathogens or viruses or anything going on your body that shouldn't be there these Healers will attack it.
      This is called the herxheimer effect some refer to it as getting hoechst I have been through it myself and only more recently realized what was happening to me and the after learning about being herxed found out what i needed to do to feel better.
      If by any chance you should be doing any of those superfoods and healers and feel yourself getting ill and realize you're having the herxheimer effect one of the best things to do is take the powdered bentonite clay you can buy a pretty big container of it by the NOW company for $15 or you can take finally powdered diatomaceous earth.
      I know that my vision problems are slowly reversing because back in November my eye doctor told me that i needed a stronger prescription for my glasses but then about two months later i had to revert back to my old pair of glasses which i had for 3 years or longer because they were making everything too blurry .
      That was weird because at first those new glasses were a godsend .
      Also you know you could have an absorption problem and if a person has an absorption problem then it is harder for them simply to absorb certain nutrients and vitamins also certain illnesses will contribute to vision problems and are part of the syndrome but many American and Western doctors don't know this or won't tell you this

    • @gardensofthegods
      @gardensofthegods Před 6 lety

      This is continuing( about your eyesight )
      So like I said if you have an absorption problem which a lot of Americans do you might want to look into doing a very small amount of pure gum Spirits turpentine but please do not buy the kind from the hardware store Like Home Depot or paint shop or an artist supply shop because those are usually a waste product from paper mills and are processed through a petroleum distillate which makes them very dangerous I always recommend Diamond G Forest brand from Georgia it is a clear liquid and smells a little bit like watered-down sambuca is very strong very powerful I would not do anything more than a quarter teaspoon with some sugar then skip a day then do it again then skip a day do it one more time then maybe wait a couple weeks to see how your body reacts.
      People from the mountainous areas like the Appalachians do it about once a month I hear they do a teaspoon which I think can be awfully strong at first for a lot of people that's why I recommend starting off easy and they always do it with some sugar.
      If you have something like pernicious anemia that will make it almost impossible for you to make vitamin B12 or possibly the whole B complex I forget but some of those B vitamins are very important for vision pernicious anemia is no joke ... before the days of vitamin B shots people could actually die from it... I have had it all my life and it just will make you tired all the time extremely tired no matter what you do.
      If you have the H pylori bacteria and many people do yet don't know it ..also their doctors don't bother to tell them that it sets up a whole syndrome.. you will have an absorption problem ..i had a bleeding ulcer when i was only 18 years old ..a stomach ulcer.. it has come back off and on over the decades ...powerful healers such as the pure gum Spirits turpentine i told you about really can make a difference.
      Also if you're doing any big Pharma drugs at all I said get off of them because every single one of those things has side effects most of them are really bad the rule of thumb all you have to remember is this big Pharma drugs take out of your body something it needs whereas natural from plants ,roots ,flowers.. whatever ,natural healers give your body something it needs.

      Never be there . We can turn our volume down to zero but are limited to how high it will go . Mine stays on full blast and that's not good for many youtube videos except for the advertising

    My goodness, with the economy the way it is u should be getting so many more viewers then what u have. Free food, hey a great new buisness. Cheap lanscaping company will turn your weeds into a great green drink. Oh sorry, might not work. It is easier 2 just buy stuff with your food stamp card. And the survivors in this world will be the green lovers. Amen.
