Syreeta Wright (August 3, 1946[1] - July 6, 2004[2]), who recorded professionally under the single name Syreeta, was an American singer-songwriter, best known for her music during the early 1970s through the early 1980s. Wright's career heights were songs in collaboration with her ex-husband Stevie Wonder and musical artist Billy Preston.
In between working with Wonder on his albums, Wright decided to return to her own singing career.[5] Motown reassigned the singer from Motown's Gordy imprint, where "I Can't Give Back the Love I Feel for You" was released, to Motown's L.A.-based MoWest subsidiary. Wonder and Wright had marriage troubles and divorced in the summer of 1972, ending their 18-month marriage.[5] Following their divorce, Wonder oversaw the production of Wright's first solo album, Syreeta (released on June 20, 1972),[5] which included her take of Wonder's "I Love Every Little Thing About You" from Music of My Mind, the Smokey Robinson classic "What Love Has Joined Together", and The Beatles' "She's Leaving Home", which featured both Wonder and Wright applying background vocals via the talk box. MoWest issued "I Love Every Little Thing About You" in the late winter of 1972, but it failed to chart. Remaining best friends, Wright would continue to provide background vocals and compositions with Wonder for the next two decades. - wikipedia

These two legendary albums are in my vinyl discotheque, the two versions are incredible and inseparable, Stevie plays all the instruments on them. Syreeta's voice is like a timeless and delightful angel.

Stevie and Syreeta both did a great job. But I'll play Stevie's version first.

Both are great! You can hear Stevie doing background in her song. Syretta’s was much lighter. Love them both. Mood is the choice for one over the other.

I actually like Syretta's version better. Her voice suits the song better, its really the best of both worlds because you have Stevie in the background too.

Both versions are Stevie productions and he's singing on both as well... but I love Syreeta's angelic lead vocals; especially the harmonies.😍

Hat’s off to Reel Black for these Who Does It Better face offs. Back in the day when I did mix tapes, I would make Double Play Tapes. Playing the same songs back to back eg Love Hangover Fifth Dimension/Diana Ross. We know that outcome! Lol. Please do more. Thanks!

I heard Syreeta's first and I love it, but after finding out Stevie made his own, I can't stop replaying it 😭 Something about the breathes in the background and the joyful voices chiming in. It's like he can't contain the love and his voice is so wonderfully boisterous.

Stevie… Harmonically it just feels better….
The way it starts and continues to build with all of the small nuances within the instrumentation, it puts the listener in a beautiful dream state….
My question for you is Who did “you and I” better…. Stevie or O’Brien………..

I as much as I love to proclaim a definitive version, I have to declare this a straight up tie. It's like trying to determine who did Give Me Your Love better Curtis Mayfield or Barbara Mason? Another straight up tie.

  • @elizabethsteele4633

The question is a bit misleading since Stevie probably " produced and directed " both . As much as I love Syreeta ( lovely name by the way ) Stevie is in special category : ---- Gershwin, Ellington , Jobim , Beethoven , Charlie Parker . But just between the two of us , when I hear Syreeta sing feel good .
