What's so special about Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man? With arms outstretched, the man fills the irreconcilable spaces of a circle and a square -- symbolizing the Renaissance-era belief in the mutable nature of humankind. James Earle explains the geometric, religious and philosophical significance of this deceptively simple drawing.
Lesson by James Earle, animation by TED-Ed.
Despite the depressing narration, da Vinci is awesome.
Hide Me Whoa, now that is rude.
he sounds like he's reading a script and not explaining it to a classroom which other videos' narrator do
SeventySeven yeah.... I have a monotone voice. In my head it sounds like I have more emotional than I do. If you liked the content, though, I have a personal channel with more monotone narration and art history
Lmao! I paused the video just to laugh at this comment. 😛😂
this video is much better to learn about leonardo czcams.com/video/_RU2l-09pms/video.html&lc=UgzWRL3uTu-jNDp79U54AaABAg.98gUQgsWSyN98idL-A_vVw 👌
Leonardo da Vinci learned anatomy from actual human dissections. He was given permission by hospitals in Florence and Milan. His drawings were so detailed that they can still be found in anatomy text books.
I can't believe I never really knew what the Vitruvian man was all about. I thought it was just some kind of iconic study in anatomy and some natural ratios (artists do love their ratios). But, of course, Leonardo was thinking about much more than that.
Most dont know.
I remember the day i went to apply for art school and none of the teachers had any knowledge.
All were supeficial.🤭 🤗
@@maximhollandnederlandthene7640 Well what is it?...the vitruvian man
Honestly i also thought this was drawing in ancient books of Medicen and anatomy and it has something to do with human body
But what if he just wanted to draw a man doing jumping jacks?
I'm laughing like hell :D
That would be impossible
Da Vinci has a long history of studying mathematics, philosophy, and had a good history of feud against the Catholic dogma. Each and every single one of his work tells of various ideas that have proven controversial and historical for the advancement of mankind.
Please stop judging art through image alone and learn the history of its author and the work. Modern art is so looked down upon because no one does research about the history anymore.
(Well, unless you count video games and films as art...which it is)

@@salmanhaidr wtf dude
HAHHAHAAHHAAHHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
See, I wish someone had told me this sooner. I always assumed it was just a study in anatomy and proportion.
Its often obvious that ancient Greek or Roman mythology often had multiple meanings. Which is obvious when you notice how weird some of the Greek myths are. Obviously many were not meant to be literal. I wonder if the same goes for this artwork... that it DOES have true meanings or applications relating to nature's design or dimensions... but also some secondary purpose or message which is hiding in plane sight.
And this exactly why I shouldn't had trusted CZcams comments regarding videos, you all don't know a damn thing about why Da'Vinci constructed this Vitruvian man in the first place. It's not about anatomical proportion, it's something else and I cannot share with you the truth, not unless I deconstruct this BS...See the beginning of the video? It contains clues about animators, then this video starts with a silly story about how this man was created but what it doesn't tell you is for what purpose was this man created...
@@redragongaming so tell us 😊

This guy's voice isn't that bad.
I didn't notice his voice or tone being particularly bothersome. Lots of famous ppl with horrible sounding voices so surprised this upset so many 🤔

My thoughts exactly. These hipsters just love turning brown paper bags into fine vintage lunch boxes.
Well, perhaps for a genius like him this is really as simple as a doodle :D
Lucas Layton yeah but even doodles have thought behind them, like a rough idea or glimpse of inspiration.

"It's a simple pen and ink drawing right?" Yeah, it pretty much i---"WRONG".
Fascinating facts about the Vitruvian man. Unrelated but also incredibly useful as an element of the sketch - Leonardo marked out his proportions for each section fairly clearly, making it a good template to learn how to proportion the human figure. My first year in art school we actually used the Vitruvian Man as a point of reference for this reason.
We're your biggest fans, James! Thank you so much for the hard work you put into this amazing Lesson.
We encourage everyone to check out his channel for more great content.
If he's a teacher, I wouldn't learn easily because of how he delivers his lessons. 🤦
Please encourage him to deliver better :(

Is it true this sketch is also used for solving the problems of great pyramid?
The content was fine but you sound so bored I almost fell asleep myself
+Turtles I'm happy you found the content interesting... I've been working on the voice thing, but I'm still happy that TED ed has started to use voice actors for the videos. If you like the content, though, I have more like that the channel AmorSciendi
James Earle how is vitruvian man is related to architecture??
Gourav Bhosekar Vitruvius was an architect

Thank you, Mr. James. Wonderful explanation of one of the greatest works.
When he asked the first question and answered "wrong" I felt offended somehow 😂
I was wondering what the Vitruvian Man was about so it was a good thing to come across this, thank you.
Had a wild, intense dream several months ago, where I saw the Vitruvian man image drawn big on my bedroom wall in red, and I felt connected to the whole universe, to everything, for about 7 seconds. I had nothing but unconditional love flowing through me. It was like a feeling of true power. I guess some of the explanations in this video explains the meaning behind my dream. The use of free will to learn about love, to grow and flow in the opposite direction of evil. The choice is ours. Nothing to do with religion (of which I am not any part of). I know that this experience had to have meant something powerful, because the Vitruvian man image is completely random to me and something I don't even think about. It was totally out of left field.
Nostalgic_Chaos inception dude. You were incepted haha
You were actually so close to correct, but you had one little detail wrong. there is a lot and i do mean a lot, of truth, to ...most religions. try to grasp that one next mentally and you might see god. if you are lucky

Nicely done, James Earle. (In my college days, back in the 1960s, one of my favorite Engineering professors was named James (or "Jim") Earle. He was a great cartoonist, and drew a regular cartoon for the University newspaper.)

Nicely made, Sweet and simple I like it.
Thanks, James! A little enlightenment for me(and I’m sure, a few others.) Fun!
That was excellent and I just came from another Leonardo video (see below link) where they went further with its proportions and chambers of the Great Pyramid and spiritual energy, etc. For myself, about Humans "Being" in the center and able to move up and down the chain; it has great meaning to me. Since my awakening and experiences of "multidimensional'" realms and Selves and such things; this makes great sense to how they thought or what they knew and did themselves; Leonardo, the other guy in the video and the ancients. Spirit-Science is physical and non physical, its sacred math, vibration, sound and light frequencies and overall its the Macro in the Micro and vice versa. For myself, I dont always know the details, math and so on, but I do know from experiences how things are and work to great extents. Like a guy says in another video I will leave for all you who feel it and get inspired, "Wayseers have an unexplainable knack for just knowing the Way. They sense it in their very being. They can't tell you why or how they arrived at the right answer. They just know it in their core. They can't show their work. So don't ask. Their minds simply resonate with the Way. When the Way is present, so are they."
Anyway when Humans have their own experiences inner and outer, here and beyond, their will be no more "hidden/coded" anything and new terms will be the norm, like energy centers, multi-d, Star Beings, densities, dimensions-consciousness and so on. Enjoy the two vids below and lots of love to you all. Love Christopher
Thankyou christopher i love your thought process.
You're really smart. Thanks
Squaring a circle is perfectly possible. Take a square with side length square root of π, and a circle of radius 1. πx(1squared) is just π. And root π times root π is also π. QED.
But they themselves have said that pi itself is not perfect .That's why any solution containing or have used the value of pi will only be approx not exact.
the problem is you can't do it with ruler and compass
Excellent, you guys! Beautifully and splendidly explained 👏❤!! Gregg Oreo long Beach Ca
Wow this was really enlightening. I knew the drawing comprised mathematical properties (phi), but I didn't know the philosophical background.
for everyone wondering, yes he's a teacher, and happens to be my english teacher. all of you should avoid making these rude comments since you know nothing about him. he's a wonderful teacher, and despite his monotone voice he makes his lessons very intriguing. i always leave the class having learned something new. instead of speculating over how he "delivers" his lessons, you should learn how to be a kinder person. if you have nothing nice to say, don't say it at all. stop making fun of him, because you don't know how much your comments might hurt.

The concept of pie in formula of circle being indeterminate tells us why suare cannot equal a circle
This was deeper than I had thought of.
It's amazing video because It contains a lot of impressive and useful information
Jimmy Hendrix used this picture in one of his albums, this could lead to another question, what would Leonardo have thought of Jimmy's guitar playing?

This was a brilliant video!
This is why I like TedEd's Vids it has "Simplicity".
I like Addison Anderson's narration more :/
The narrator voice kinda reminded me of Joey Tribbiani's award accepting speech. Not interested to do it, but is doing it anyway.
Vitruvian man was first described by a hatch ranking officer in Caesars army-Vetruvius. He listed those attributes that would make the perfect man. Including the naval and circle, and the outstretched arms equaling the height of a man. He listed approximately 20 different attributes. Leading up to DaVinci, there were several poor attempts at illustrating the list. DaVinci was the closest accomplishing that feat.
Great video. Thanks!
I'm from Italy
Wrong!
Man talk slowly... Damn it!!!!
I like the narration.
In the era with so less to offer these people gave so much for us!!!
The narration is really not that bad. When one person commented that, 500 others followed suit.
Well this is interesting.
Great explanation !
I once drew a picture which I felt symbolized life, the universe and everything quite nicely. It was of a samwich eating a smaller samwich. ...am I famous now?

The drawing is perfect except for the absence of underwear.
Its a long and very optimistic stretch to think he draw it to combine math, philosophical, religion and architecture into one. a very long streeeeeetch imo.
Quão bom é meditar em pessoas boas e coisas boas!
Wow, I always wondered what this man is doing in the middle of a circle and between a square.
Why is the narrator so depressed, someone needs to pay him more 😂
did anyone else cringe when the compass was placed on the naval?!
The compass fits nicely in the navel, you mean?
the idea behind this picture interests me so much.
A rational explanation, thanks for sharing it with us.
