Isn't the rule that if you try to actually get the ball, a foul on a player who's through on goal isn't a straight red anymore? Believe it is in the Netherlands since this season and would be kinda weird if the rules are different in other european competitions. Would mean that a yellow would be enough for that VVD foul. Do believe red was a bit harsh if I'm honest
Its the rule inside the penalty box to avoid both red and penalty. Outside the box its still a red as it could be abused otherwise
