    Nice video. Thanks. I use Nexus a lot so I was really happy to hear about and purchase the upgrade. It’s an expensive habit but worth it to me if you’re doing any type of electronic music. Great that they ‘gave’ you 350 extra sounds but they needed to update that whole old preset library that comes with it. Very happy with the update and looking forward to future added functionality.

    Manuel from Vengeance is the sound designer for both Nexus and Avenger (there are other sound designers who work with him but I think he's the main one behind both products). Avenger still has potential for 3rd party preset packs, since anyone can create those and sell them just like you can with any other synths and you can still get the expansions that Manuel creates with similar sounds to those he creates for Nexus.

    The sounds from the basic package are great. I would recommend adding Analog and a few packs in your preferred genre to start. As far as Avenger, it is much more powerful but much slower to load sounds and has a much higher memory footprint. Better for sound design but not for quick composing.

  • @juliancroot
    @juliancroot Před 4 lety +2

    The only reason I'd want to upgrade is to make browsing the library quicker and easier to read. Literally nothing else has really changed from the point of view of how I use it.
    I can already turn off layers in Nexus 2, and when it comes to arpegiators and effects... well I don't really use them, I tend to play sections by hand and apply effects in my DAW.
    The upgrade price is tempting though, and getting one step closer to being dongle-less is a bonus. Its just unfortunate that Cubase still requires the same dongle, so I'll be stuck with it for a little while longer anyway.
    The one question still remaining for me is this..... if I have a Nexus 2 project in progress, will Nexus 3 be backwards compatible with it? If not, that pretty much puts a stop on any chance of me upgrading.
    Thanks for the video. A very nice overview and much more informative than the one on the Refx website.

I hope you didn’t mean you wanted to split up licenses from someone’s single-purchase-which-includes-2-licenses. I doubt that will work. If one N3 purchase includes 2 licenses, I’d doubt you can split that up between different accounts.

    UPDATE: THEY THREATENED ME!
    What they won't tell you in the video: the copy protection is super buggy. I have it on my desktop and laptop, and it kept deactivating and telling me I have an invalid license on both machines, whenever I open a project that uses it, or I update it. Then I needed to open a support ticket and wait a whole day to have the activation count reset. They never gave any explanation or tried to understand why it happened. They never said sorry. They just copy/pasted the same answer asking to update to the latest version even though I already told them I had the latest version.
    Today, because I was very annoyed at the reoccurring issue, they said "another outburst like that and YOU WILL BE BANNED". No activation means to way to use the software and samples I paid for. This would be stealing. This is the worst experience I've had with any music company ever, and I've dealt with dozens of them.

    A VST with all libraries that costs more than a real polyphonic analog synth like a Prophet is simply a no go. Complete nonsense. Even for half the price you can start to build a little Eurorack. I know this is not the same "customer target", but frankly, it seems completely crazy for me. I used Nexus 2, there were some cool sounds, but most are outdated now. Dune 3, Avenger, some Tone2 VST are really good and cost a fraction of the price of Nexus.

      @KNHSynths Před 4 lety +2

      @@jordaan80 I know Nexus is the Photoshop of VST : only one person for 1000 is using it legally ... But the problem it is not the price only, most libs are outdated. I've got a lot of legal VST that can do the job, and lot of real gears. I don't need to pirate anything.
      But I know it will be the case for most users... when a product is overpriced, it is prirated.

    • @eshy-music
      @eshy-music Před 4 lety +2

      Comparing it to hardware synths is wrong. Nexus was about getting industry standard sounds, the sounds everyone else was using. For some people that's exactly what they need. They don't want to create their own sounds they just need the sounds that hit record has for their own production.
      It's an outdated business model. A product that only supports 1st party sound expansions that you can't really tweak and costs more than most software synths that have lots of 3rd party preset packs. Only having those 1st party sounds does guarantee a certain level of quality though, which I guess is what anyone still using Nexus is after.

    • @KNHSynths
      @KNHSynths Před 4 lety +1

      @@eshy-music Comparing with hardware or other VST is making sense, after all these are tools to produce sounds and make music. They work differently internally but they work the same for the player with a keyboard...
      When a piece of software is costing more than a great hardware with more possibilities and a unique sound signature it seems reasonable to query the interest to invest in one or the other. For the Nexus 3 price you can buy a Prophet Rev2 + a Novation Peak for example. Sincerely only fools will NOT want to compare before buying...
      Not mentioning Synths are made to get a personal sound, not to use the same sounds supplied to any customer, it's nonsense, but it is another question.
      Nexus is sounding great that's true. When you try it you can be pleased by all these sequences so rich that they are almost full orchestrations. But it is unusable in a real context, at least when you write you own music and not just copy/pasting existing sequences... Just a dumb trap. If you want stand out the crowd you will run away far from a so standardized instrument like Nexus.

      Zackery Walls wow, didn’t know that about the saved presets. The GUI is whatever. Looks like ableton inspired flat GUI. I’m with you, the update isn’t enough for me to keep shelling out 60 dollars for an expansion, unless it blows my mind.

    Everyone is mentioning Avenger in the comments? Is this a VST created by Vengeance sound designers? Either way, I feel there’s too many synths being made nowadays to it’s hard to know what you want, especially when you’re coming into the music world. Serum is a go to bc well...if it’s design, the work behind it and everyone basically uses it. But say you want you want to just start making beats - Nexus, Spire, Sylenth1, like how can you advertise this to be new and user friendly. Coming from 2, this actually looks more complicated and overwhelming tbh 😥

    There is a new Rompler if you’re looking for an alternative. It’s not overpriced and I’ve been using it for a while now. Lethal Audio is a Rompler at half the price especially around the holiday time. Google “lethal audio” and demo it. It’s worth it.

    Does anyone have an idea on if it is possible to run nexus 2 and nexus 3 at the same time? Like seperate plugins?

    • @Zalanes
      @Zalanes Před 3 lety

      No. If you already have a licence for 2, and upgrade to 3 on the same refx account. Guess it might be possible, now, without the dongle, by opening a completely new account under a different email address, but you’d have to pay full price for 3. Having said that, your IP address may be a hurdle to running both instances on the same machine, as it may not be possible to have 2 refx cloud accounts on the same machine.

    Thank you for the review this is useful! Please stop saying "this or that is outdated" though, because nothing is outdated when you know how to make it sound new, it's called "talent" ...and it is not delivered with Nexus 3 (or any other plug-in btw) ;-)

    • @EchoSoundWorks

      Nexus is a rompler and avenger is a synth/sampler. One can create new sounds from scratch, the other can't

  • @davidelstonmusic

    Nexus 2 / 3 sound great to me but the dongle is why I don't own 2. Removing that from 3 was a good move...but their expansion pricing still just feels like a gouge. I rarely start a sound completely from scratch. I usually find a preset close to something I like, and then go to town tweaking and altering until I'm happy. I DO have avenger but never use it. It is insanely powerful, and sounds great...But I don't use it because of a few things:
    1. it's GUI is awful, and downright confusing. This makes the synth very unapproachable (for me). After exhausting my presets, I have never felt compelled to to master the synth. Instead I've just focused on a honing my skills on a select few of the "core" synths I have that are much easier to use, and still produce great sounds
    2. It suffers from a similar expansion pricing problem as Nexus, they're just not competitive in 2019 where I can find preset packs / bundles for very reasonable prices.
    3. Very few 3rd party preset packs available...Refer to item 2.
    I don't see myself getting Nexus 3, because I can still get great sounds I can use and custom fit to my tracks using Sylenth1, Spire and Serum. :)

    • @Fox_is_Fox
      @Fox_is_Fox Před 4 lety

      Exactly! if you're serious about your music it needs more than just a good preset, what's on the radio right now is very minimal, specially in the pop scene, Nexus 2 has already everything inside to make any track you hear on the radios.

    ive been thinking , since this is cloud based why not sale sounds individually you can listen to a preview and buy it with whatever price they can come up with that can cost you 2.5k lol if you buy them all but at least you don't buy a full expansion for a couple of sounds you might use in that expansion and spend your money where you really want to and not get stuck with stuff you paid for but will never use.

    • @eshy-music
      @eshy-music Před 4 lety

      It's not their business model. They want you to buy a full expansion based on the genre even if you only end up using 10% of it.

    I will never buy a Refx product again after the way they did me after losing my dongle. I would highly recommend learning synthesis and avoiding Nexus or any other romplers. Creating sounds from scratch is much more rewarding anyway! Save your money and buy Omnisphere or other Spectrasonics software if you want bang for your buck and great customer service if you ever run into problems.

    Honestly, i thought nexus 3 would allow us to create our own presets by scratch. So yea, kind of a disappointment. But the only thing i like about nexus 3 is that you can edit the individual arpeggiators and trancegates in each oscillator. Overall, slight disappointment.
