Will it Start? 1937 Ford Sitting a Year

- This time at the Quick Speed Shop its an epic struggle to get my 1937 Ford fired up to move it into the shop. First off, the 6 volt electrical system leaves little room for cranking. Then the 97 carb is fighting me. Then I swap on a 94 carb and it leaks, so back to the 97. And so it goes... Will it start? Will it run? Is this Ford flathead ever going to run?
Please like, share, and subscribe. I put out new videos every Wednesday and Sunday.

Oh that was a fun ride. Thanks for bringing us along Josh. Thanks for the video 🙂
I can't wait to get it more reliable for summer! 👍
I could be wrong, but I think I saw somewhere that you can find alternators that look like generators and mount in the stock location
Power Master makes them, but they're really expensive, like $400! This car also runs the fan off the generator so you need a special pulley for that which adds another $75.
yeah it'll pop if generators not charging i converted my farmall m to12v starts runs great but had parasitic drain killing the new battery when parked turns out it was the 6v light switch those old generators need to polarize the magnets at the regulator a jumper wire B+ to A terminal
I'm going 12v soon. I've owned this car 11 years and driven it about 20 miles total. Keeping it 100% stock is okay, but I want to drive the car. 12v will give me better lights, better charging, and elec ignition. The stock 1937 generator doesn't even have a regular. It has an external cutout so I guess it is supposed to charge full bore until the cutout opens or the key shuts off. Somewhere around 1940 I think they went to external regulator generators. Switching to an alt will be so much better. Not to mention cranking at more than 6 rpm 😅
Hola te escribo desde Argentina si esta bien el arranque y el distribuidor no hace falta que lo tranformes a 12 volt ya que en 6 volt funciona correcto tenfrias que ver el arranque y el distribuidor
de revisarlo
Throw some dirty shop rags in the trunk of that 'ol washing machine!! Keep tinkering - The frog car is alive!!
Gonna need more than dirty rags in the trunk. Maybe an old engine block! 😅
I meant to wash them in the Ford-O-Matic washer.. LOL

Synchromesh in the old gal? Agree, it sounds knurly
It's got a '39 trans so it's a little better synchro. 1st is still non-synchro.
You a word in your title.
Thanks, I fixed it!
Crossed spark wires ? And or timing
Wires are correct and new. Dist should be okay, points, coil, condenser are new. Charging system doesn't work so it's probably due to inadequate 6V. Going to switch over to 12v, alt, and elec ign later this year.
Switch tops off of the other Carb. rather then rune the other top.
They don't swap. One is a 94, the other a 97.
I was unaware of the differences between the two carbs.
'will it start' is as boring a title as a SBC in a Ford. I was reviving ancient barn finds when I was 15 years old in the 60's usually just with gas and a battery and a bicycle pump for the old flat tires. A float needle can't stop a fuel pump even if the float was completely full. Don't waste time with iffy components then complain about that legendary engine.
You might find it boring, but it's a very popular subject on CZcams. I'm not complaining about the flathead, in fact, I just spent $2000 putting it in this car last year. This isn't 1960 anymore, nothing for old Fords is cheap. I'm battling this car in the cold, with an iffy 6V system so it is frustrating. I spent months working on the car and like I said thousands to put this engine in. You know what that Stromberg 97 alone costs new? $525! It would have been way easier and cheaper to put a junkyard SBC in it, but guess what, I wanted the flathead. I also went thru the effort to find a good '39 trans (not cheap) recored the radiator (not cheap) and used expensive, restoration correct parts to do it. So, yeah, it is a feat to get it running. The flathead is reliable...when it runs! Just so you don't think I'm an idiot, I pulled a Model A Ford truck out of a shed after 40 years, changed the gaskets, rebuilt the Zenith carb and ignition, and had it running no problem. It still starts on the first crank every time. This car has been fighting me nonstop since I've owned it.
I've done hundreds of old cars and still run them but quit wasting bux keeping them pure stock long ago. My wife recently got a really nice 31 Hudson 8 coupe and first thing I did was put a weber carb , electric pump, pertonix and proper lights on it. If the engine didn't already keep up with todays traffic I'd put one in that would but not a SBC because they're so boring and common. You can use a 12v battery on a 6v starter to get it sorted out but don't get it hot. @@QuickSpeedShop
This particular car I wanted to keep close to stock because it's so original. I still have the mechanical brakes and they work awesome. Just about everything else I have is modified. I am trying to preserve a period build with this car, but it's going 12V this summer.
