  • Using new tricks on an old flathead. The Ford flathead is one of automotive history's most loved motors. That's why we machine and build one on this episode! Then, we head to the dyno to test out the results. Plus, a hot rod face-off between a 5-window coupe and a modern rod.

    Looking at that old school rod really makes me want to build a vintage hot rod.

      I'd love to as well but theyre so damn expensive. A 40' ford with a flathead would be my pick. A 40' DeSoto or Chrysler with an early Gen 1 Hemi would be killer too.

    And what about the V8 '32, 33, & 34s? And production did carry over into the first few months of 1953.
    Dad had a 53 F1 and I had a 53 mainline 2door post which I always referred to as a coupe. Shame they don't build them like that anymore. Could buy the parts to repair or rebuild 90+% of all electrical, mechanical functions on it. Rebuild the generator? .50, for the brushes.

    How many know that offehouser has made two spark plug heads for the flat head engine . Two spark plugs for each cylinder. Back in the late fifties I seen a pair of these heads stored on a shelf and they were made of aluminum.

    Where is Ed smith of Five Star Engines?

  • @stevewaterhouse3025

    a "brace"? a brace is two, not four, and it refers to hunting speak, e.g., one might kill a brace of birds or rabbits. Just kidding fellas! love your work! was kinda hoping you were putting the flatty in the prowler ;)

    I would love to have a flatty in a '32 Ford roadster. Unfortunately, a stroked SBF can make twice the power for 1/3 the money and be NA. It won't be anywhere near as cool though. RIP to Mark Kirby.

    No waste gates on these like diesels they come from… the belts be best at 6 psi and slipping…Not suitably engineered for that….birth of the tooth wide belt….and roots blowers was king.
    Im reliving my drag racing years in the 70s with most you who post on you tube about the 70s… Thank you..

    A Goodwrench 350 makes more HP. Flatheads are expensive to build.

    • @bmstylee
      @bmstylee Před rokem +5

      And an LS makes more for less than pretty much anything out there. But if you're building a flattie it's about hitting an era not necessarily all out power.

      Well you remind me of my father who thinks if he doesn't see the need for something then no one else needs it either.

    • @SGTJDerek
      @SGTJDerek Před rokem +2

      There's a place for everything. Flatheads WERE cheap and became even cheaper after the SBC became the go to engine. They're expensive now because they are rare. You aren't going to find 20 laying in your local junkyard. Since the LS took over, finding a 1st Gen is getting harder. Even the SBF is getting harder to find.

    • @Dazza_Doo
      @Dazza_Doo Před 3 měsíci

      Funny, you say they are expensive to build, yet you only need a few simple tools. On the other hand my common rail diesel is not user serviceable.
