Thanks Emily! This is what I'll be teaching Sparky next.
LOVED the beginning with Kiko, Splash and Tug crossing paws all at once! Ahhh too cute!
This is a really helpful video; thank you! One of the things I struggle with is figuring out at what step to introduce the verbal cue (if you are using one?). If you have a chance to include that information in future videos, that would be great. Thanks again for all your videos; it is so great to see the power of positive reinforcement!
I simply love to watch your videos as compared to others on CZcams. The tricks are amazing and so enjoyable to watch and you make them look so simple to learn.
Oh BOY, this is the best day ever! New videos from you, Pam, AND Sian!! Woot!!!
Woot!
U r the best! It always looks like you and the dogs are having fun.
Super fun! This is a nice tutor. it is simple enough for me and the breaks with text is just enough for me- I am a little slow lol, hopefully my dogs will be quicker and I can keep up with them lol THanks for sharing you have great dogs, and I love how you show all sizes can do this.
I know it's old but I was looking to teach that trick to my dog and it worked ! So thank you 😊
Oh yay! Paw crossing can be a tricky one!
Nicely done and explained video. Thanks for sharing!
Great video! My dog has almost learned this trick by following your steps. We're ready to switch to a smaller target and put it to a verbal.
Oh awesome! :)
Love it! Lucy does this automatically when she lays down. Jessie was taught the same way. It's such an endearing behavior! Donna, Jessie & Lucy
Now I got something to practice over the holidays while we are in half lockdown, looks awesome 😊
GREAT video!! All the dogs are so beautiful. That Poodle is really fluffy. Thank you for another great teaching video.
Great video! I taught my Chihuahua the cross paws trick after watching your tutorial. I love how you use positive reinforcement! Recently uploaded his video under Rudipup. Your training is truly inspirational!
Awe what an awesome video! He is really a paw crossing expert!
@@kikopup Thank you! I've been following your tutorials for the past 6 years and they are awesome. Everything from behaviour to trick training. Your tutorials on stop barking, fear of strangers, stacking cups, look left, handstand and fetch unusual objects, paw targeting are some of my favourites. My dog learned new behaviours and tricks in a positive and fun way thanks to you. Most of the tricks I've taught him are from your videos. It's amazing how trick training builds confidence and a strong relationship. If you Have a chance check out his videos. I really appreciate all your videos and how you want to educate people on positive reinforcement. Thanks again!
Yes, her videos and way of working with dogs is really awesome! :)
aaaw love the Poodle! Every kind of dog can learn this trick! This was my first video from you and the first more awesome trick I teached my dog!
That was awesome! I love that poodle! I love the music! I have been working on this with Twix. The beginning was really cute!
I'm interested in knowing what verbal cues you use to distinguish one paw from the other. Happy to hear which cues others use as well! thanks
Same
My dog heard the click and now wants treats lol
Yes - the treat immediately follows the click. It's payment for the effort.
@@servicepapyah but their dog heard the click from video
This is great. Thanks for a new trick to work on this weekend:)
Nicely done. Love it.
You have great training videos. Thank you. I would to see an indication of how long each trick took in real time before they understood it with command only.
Whit my dog the most tricks (forward tricks, backward tricks) took as long as shown in the videos - he just needs a few trys and repetitions for every step. But I have never really worked a lot with tricks, where he has to do something on the floor or where he has to stay in a position. So this paw trick took much more repetitions. I am not an expert, but I think it s really up to the experience of your dog, your way of training (If we humans do a lot of faults on our part or not) and the method itself (not every methode works for every dog).
Hi, Kikopup. I’m a fan of your video and really learn a lot from it!! I would like to know how to teach my dog to use his hand rather than his mouth. He tends to bite the toy whenever I hand him the toy. He knows to raise his hand when I fetch my hand to him ( as I’ve tough him to shake hand). I’ve tried to use different toys but still he like to bite it rather than touch it with his paws. LOL. Really need your advice. Thank you!!
Beautiful demo of shaping behaviors!

No thanks. I'll stick to the science of incrementally shaping behavior!
this is great!
what would be the key words for this? cross left/cross right?
I trained Indi how to do this a while ago, it's her favourite trick and she's an expert at it. :)!!
i found it easier to teach cross paws as an advanced version of shake hands ;) if you are asking your dog each paw with a different hand all you have to do to get cross paws is to ask for shake hands not in front of your dog but at his or her side ;D
one word!!!! amazing!
Hello, Emily. Thank u so much for ur awesome videos. They've helped me a great deal in teaching my Miniature Schnauzer tricks. However, my dog is blind, most likely since birth. When we got him at 3 months old, he was already blind. I tried putting a treat under several things (a small dish, a pad of sticky notes), but he doesn't put his paw on them. He just tries to dig his nose under the item to get to the treat. Do u have any suggestions as to how I can have his paw touch the item? Thank u.
You are so amazing! You're babies are so cute too!:) I was working with my dog, trying to teach him this but he gets frustrated really easy. He is a wolf/lab mix and he is very well mannered and he knows the basic tricks, but when I try and teach him anything more complicated like this, even slowly, he gets very frustrated... is it something I am doing wrong maybe? Or is there a way I can help him to be less frustrated?
And thanks for all of the helpful videos!!:)
oh my the intro with all three in tandem is too cute!
Great video
lol, I like when you first switch to the paper target Kiko gives you a funny look...
Awesome! I really like when you're behind your border collie and he follows your feet. ;-)))
What kind of order do you to your dog? Do you say the same word than the one you use for giving paws? Or do give a different? Are you using diffrent words for crossing paws one way and the other way?
Been really struggling to get my guy to do it without shifting his entire body to the side to move his paw rather than just his leg. Longest it's ever taken to teach him a trick and i have to take very frequent breaks with it to avoid frustration 😂 started teaching it by just asking for his paw
Thank you so much! :) It worked..
Oh congrats!!!
Are you giving a command when you put the marker down or just waiting for the behavior?
I will try this!!
Nice tutorial
so cool!
hey Emily! how do you add the legs crossing visual cue to this trick?
Thank you for this video! Quick question- my puppy is good with paw targeting with buttons from your earlier video, and can differentiate between right and left paw. But I tried rewarding her for only using her right paw for 'cross your paws', and she seems to have regressed to just using her right paw for everything. Is there a verbal cue you're associating with 'cross your paws' that can help with this? The "hi" vs "bye" cue? Thanks!
Yes you could use a verbal cue to give a hint. You can also go back and retrain the other paw from scratch if its getting weaker.
@AGGwoteva
Hi I've been having a similar problem. My puppy targets with the same paw well but when I try to move the target over she targets it by crossing her paws with the target sandwiched between them lol, or like you say moves so it's in the middle or swaps paw. Did you find a way around this to achieve the trick in the end? : ) xx
Any tips for a dog who repositions his whole body when you place the target object to the side?
@easyitsashley I was nine years old when my parents gave him to me. All I know is he is my best friend and he is more mellow and kind than any other dog that I have met. Plus I wasn't asking you.
Love this but How do I transition from targeting object standing up to lying down.
Podrá lograrloooo Maireee Winkkk ft Changura.
Is it possible to teach dogs with short legs this cross paw trick? My dog tried to cross her paw to hit the target, but she had to flip her body to do that. Or was I doing something wrong in shaping the behaviour?
It´s so cool ... I try to teach it to my 2 bolognese dogs an my papillon ... the papillon is very clever and learning fast ... the two bologneser are asking FOR WHAT :-)
Hi. Awesome video. So you don't actually say "Cross Paws"??
@phiney69 I kept doing it with leah and eventually and i really do mean eventually she did it once x once she had done it i started moving her paw for her, saying the command and then click and treat x then she knew what i wanted, when i held her paw down and moved my hand while saying it she clicked x hope that helps your pup :) x
Very clever
i've been trying this one..haven't quite gotten it yet
Kikopup, help. I have. A dobie and an Aussie and they cross their leg and in a split second, they shift both legs and chest over to touch the target. I click as soon as the leg crosses but before I can stop the click, they shift their whole body. We're into the 3rd week of teaching, how long does it take?
I suggest to try not clicking and just feed treat after treat while they are in the crossed position putting the treats down to the side the dog is crossing. Sometimes putting a frisbee over the leg that they will be crossing over can help teach them to cross and hold.
what do you do if your dog just tucks the nearest leg away and slides his nose to the covered treat?
My dog does the same thing as another poster said. He moves his body to position the target between his front legs. Having trouble getting him to actually cross his legs. Any suggestions?
Move the target an inch at a time, so the dog will continue touching the target, until the target is on the other side of the leg and on the floor again. When shaping a behavior, break it down into small pieces, and it will go faster.
I can use some help.... My labrador Indy loves touching a lit for a treat, but she won't cross over. She will touch it when the lit is on her other paw, but moving just a bit causes her to move the paw sideways instead of keeping it in place. What should we do??
What Ive done is use a large frisbee as a target first that can be placed over the other paw. That can stop the dog thinking to readjust the other paw
@@kikopup thanks, I'm going to try that !
I love how nonchalant Splash always is with her tricks. "Yeah, that was easy, what next?"
My dog Puppit almost has the right side down, this trick is so cute!
I realise that this video is 10 years old now, but does anybody know what the smiley face target is and where one could get one please?
what is the cues you use??
How do you transition into crossing your own legs as the cue for this behavior?
+LorraineVirginie at the end where it shows placing your foot instead of the object/paper. You could probably even start with your foot with a treat under it.
my labrador knows to touch my hand or an object with her left paw, but when i put the object next to her right paw so she has to cross them over she moves her body so the object is between her paws so she doesnt have to cross them. if i hold her right paw down so that she cant move her body she refuses to do the trick till i let go. help!! xD x
I’m struggling with this because my pup always moves things around with her nose so she keeps moving the object with her snoot only!
What verbal cues do you use to distinguish left over right from right over left?
I say Cross, and Switch.
@@kikopup Thank you! I love your videos! You inspire me to do great things with my dog! Have a great day!
hi i was trying to teach my dog this trick but he wont even bother to even touch the object with his paws he just stares at it and its really frustrating,do you know what I can do?
PRECIOSO !!!! :-))
@AGGwoteva Thanks, I'll give it a go. Practice makes perfect eh? Licks from Lola. : ) x
Is step 1 for any paw that the dog offers?
You could train 1 paw first or train both paws at the same time :)
just awesome... ; ;
ill see if i can do this myself with my girl
wowowowza!
I'll try this on my dogs...
Okay thank you Jack mo
Oh man, Emily. That haircut on you is adorable, and really sexy. I wish my hair would do that when it's short.
I have a brand new brilliant Airedale Terrier puppyboy. Your vids have helped me tremendously. Thanks Kiko!!
MY DOGS ARE LOOKING FOR THE TREAT WITH EACH CLICK....CLICKER SAVY
if you want to cross your legs from sitting or standing position, you have to start all over again
my dog just got really scared of the clicker and didnt want to do it anymore lol
I know that. Try to muffle your clicker by clicking in your trouser pocket or putting it in a washcloth. Or just use a word instead of the click like "yes" or "ok"
my dog just did this naturally since she could lay down

my dog is just smelling the trat she is not putting any paws
higher value treat maybe? something s/he can't resist!
She is trying to get te treat with her mouth
My dogs legs are too tiny to do dis!
I have seen a corgi do it! But it also depends on how wide the dogs chest is. that can make it hard to cross their paws. But dogs with short legs can make fast turns! :)

My dogs legs are literally two inches! 😆

Finally I can teach my girl how to sit like a lady
Well... i dont have a clicker :,)
This goes over how to follow the videos without a clicker czcams.com/video/M6B-Q4-nqNg/video.html But you can make a click noise with your mouth, or just say "yes" as a marker.
Dog Training by Kikopup thank you for your help :>
that's a poodle.
