    If you want to improve your lung capacity so that you can play longer phrases on the flute, guess what?! It's not your lungs that will fix the problem. It's your embouchure!
    So if you feel like you run out of air (more than you want to), this short vid shows you the reason WHY you're running out of air!
    I love showing flute players a different way to get better at the flute. Instead of saying “just practice more!” I thrive on showing flutists how small (and smart) changes to technique makes playing and teaching the flute not only easier, but totally amazing.
    If you want more "quick fixes through proper technique" (I love that phrase!), register here www.flute.school to join me in the free tiny-course that improves your tone in 3 days - woo hoo!

      Hurrah! Twenty seven years after buying my first flute, I think I have reached "mediocre"! I am actually quite pleased about that as, apart from two short lessons at the start, I am completely self-taught (with all of the repeated mistakes and lack of practice and self- discipline that goes with that)!! I found this video useful, so thank you.

    this video was so helpful! I have an audition tomorrow for an honor band & last year I made 4th chair, but this year I *need* & want to get 1st chair bc I don’t wanna disappoint since I’m already 1st chair in my band. I tend to sometimes have an airy tone, & I managed to fix it while I tried making my embouchure smaller. I have to make my air last for 8 measures WHILE contrasting dynamics quite a lot. I used to be able to make it last for only 4, but your explanation to why I can’t make it last helped so much!

Shr was explaining and demonstrating how to play long notes up and down without letting out breath. She said to take in a good breath but when you start fo play the notes the sound is coming from the mouth but specifically from moving the tip of the tongue just at the back of the rop teeth. Ta ta fa r ta etc. She said to do this while holding your breath in. She was showing a particular technigue in flute playing. I wonder do you know what she was showing us and could you please show us this and explain it better because I am not sure I understood everything she said. Thanks. Great vid. I am subscibed. 😊😊😊😊😊😊

      Hi Christian,
      She must have been talking about tonguing on the flute. This is where you can play multiple notes with one breath. Try using ta- ta- ta with your tongue while playing your flute. Your tongue should hit above your two front teeth, where the gum meets the teeth. 😀

      There are 3 Fs on the flute (there is actually a secret 4th F, but no one ever really needs to play it - it's superrrr high!). The lowest and middle F have the same fingering. Which means it's all your embouchure that makes the F come out low or high. Hope that answers your question!

    Yup, that made sense! But I have a couple of questions, please. First, how do you manage dynamics and tone colour at the same time? It seems to me that by focusing conserve air you would lose flexibility. And the other question, who was your "Paris guy"? Thanks.

    • @JaneFluteSchool
      @JaneFluteSchool  Před 6 lety +1

      HI Louis, Glad the lesson made sense! When you ask whether focusing and conserving the air would make you lose flexibility - well, the thing that makes you lose flexibility is TIGHTNESS. Squeezing. So, as long as you stay "supple" in your embouchure, you will always have flexibility there! Hope that also makes sense.

    Hello my second octave notes become deeper. For example middle f note becomes %50 f note %50 e note. I measure it from tuning app. It is not %100 correct note. What can i do?

    • @JaneFluteSchool
      @JaneFluteSchool  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Ibrahim - thanks for your really good description of your tuning in the second octave! That is very flat, and is not normal to be THAT flute up higher. If you're rolling the flute in (on your mouth) this will make the notes very flat, so it's best not to do that. Also, you might want to check that the cork in the head joint of the flute is in the correct spot. You'll see a line on one end of your cleaning rod. Put this end into the head joint, and the line should be exactly in the middle of the embouchure hole of the flute. If it's not, I'd suggest taking your flute to a repairer to quickly fix the cork for you! The cork out of place can make you really out of tune. Good luck!

    can you give some exercises for fingure flexibility

    • @JaneFluteSchool
      @JaneFluteSchool  Před 5 lety +2

      Hi Mula, sure I can! If you mean to increase finger speed, you'll get the best results if you can remove tension from your shoulders (because that tension flows into your arms and into your hands - slowing your fingers down). After that, look at some books by Moyse, Taffanel and Gaubert, Trevor Wye, or Reichert. They all have good books to help speed up your fingers. And, last week I finished recording a new course called Lightning Fast Fingers. All about everything you can do to speed up your fingers! I don't want to try and sell you something (that would be rude of me!), so just let me know if you want to know more, and I can tell you about it if you're interested. Good luck! Jane

    • @JaneFluteSchool
      @JaneFluteSchool  Před 5 lety

      Hi Mula, it's all about getting the hole in your mouth smaller. This is a really good start to having more air when you play. It will make a BIG difference to how much air you have to play. The next step is to increase how much air you can breathe IN, but it's super important to work out your embouchure hole first. Basically, you're learning how to not waste your air FIRST. That should get you onto the right track! Good luck!

      I totally agree MDS! Many conductors don't appreciate that it's more important to focus your air to get a clear sound on the flute, than how long you can play the note. I'm sad you didn't get your cookie. But the good news is - even though your lungs are smaller than an adult's lungs, it's mostly your embouchure that controls how long you can play a note on the flute. Good luck with your playing!
