  • Today I'll be giving you a brief overview of the what makes a headlight Bi-Xenon instead of just Xenon. I'll also introduce you into the latest style of projector, Tri-Xenon.
    This information also applies to Halogen and LED projectors as well as Xenon.

    I’m about to install the Bixenon factory headlights into my 2010 Mazda 3 that originally had dual beam halogen bulbs (separate high and low beam bulbs). This video was super helpful explaining how the single projector outputs the high beam. Now I’ve just got to retrofit the headlights in. Lots of wiring.

      @@Mohamad_Rashad I actually sell used automotive parts for a living and mainly for Mazdas. I bought a crashed car at auction to strip down for parts and I took the lights for myself. However I’m sure you would be able to find some headlights on eBay or at a local wrecking yard in your area. If you were in Australia I would have sold you a spare set I currently have for sale haha. From the dealership they would cost an absolute fortune and wouldn’t really be worth the price.

      Every vehicle is different. you have to ensure everything internally is connected and find the correct +/- connectors for the ballast. No two vehicles share the same wiring configuration.

    Why is there a gap between the projector lens and the reflection cup? approximately 3 inches?

    • @gftgrill
      @gftgrill  Před 4 lety

      That is the way it was designed for optics and cooling. Moving the lense closer would require a different lense to get light output to the correct spot. Neil Degrasse Tyson has some good information on the science of light.

    • @gftgrill
      @gftgrill  Před rokem

      you would need a UK/RHD cut off shield to replace the LHD cut off shield for the US market. Those projectors appear to be E55 clones. OEM Hella E55 projectors are pressed together and can't be easily disassembly to get the original cutoff shield.
      Your best bet is to contact the seller and/or manufacturer to see if they offer a RHD version.

    • @gftgrill
      @gftgrill  Před 4 lety +1

      I no longer have that projector, but if I remember correctly it is used to switch the projector between LHD and RHD. That way they have one projector to share across the world and they can just flip that switch depending on the market that the headlight is for.

    if my projector is bi halogen, which means it has that flap moving. i just need a normal single filament xenon bulb?
    how about the xenon bulb flashing the light when only using high beams with low beams off? it would start so fast to shine the light?

    • @gftgrill
      @gftgrill  Před 2 lety +1

      If you have a bi-halogen projector, then you should be using a halogen bulb. Unless you are asking about using an aftermarket xenon kit to fit into your existing projector.
      It depends on the headlight setup. if the high beam uses both low and high beam bulbs, then yes it would turn on the xenon bulb. it takes less than 1 second for the xenon ballast/bulb to turn on and start producing light. In my experience it takes about 3-5 seconds for a cold xenon bulb to warm up to it's full color/brightness, but they generally start at 80-90% of their full power.

    Hi, great video!
    I'm driving a mercedes e250 cabriolet with HEADLAMP WITH ILS, LEFT-HAND TRAFFIC
    when i flashes my high beam, my left side headlight is brighter then my right.
    from your video, i believed that my left hand headlamps shutter flip up (for brighter light) while my right hand shutter flip down.
    is that normal?

    • @gftgrill
      @gftgrill  Před 2 lety

      I'll start by saying I'm no expert on RHD vehicles or European rules/laws.
      Next I'm assuming that your vehicle is equipped with Bi-Xenon headlamps.
      In the US that would be abnormal as the xenon lights should put the same high beam output through both headlights. There could be something at play causing the Right/Drivers side headlight to not be as bright to potentially not blind on-coming traffic. I have also seen a few vehicles over the years that where the off-traffic side could let more light out of the bi-xenon flat in high mode.
      I have more questions/thoughts at this point. I would start by pulling up to a wall at night/in a dark area and from about 10 ft or 3 meters away flash our high beams at the wall. From there I would check to make sure that the headlights are aligned properly. When you turn the high beam on, does the left side light point higher up? Does it appear brighter because when you turn the high beam on, it points higher up to give more light further down the road while the right side light stays flat?
      I think your vehicle is equipped with a secondary high be specific bulb, is that working on both headlights?
      You'll need a helper, but from outside of the car, can you hear the bi-xenon solenoid activate when the high beam is activated?
      Things I'm trying to figure out
      1. Is it a EU rule/law that is causing the right light to appear less bright.
      2. Do you have a failed bulb or solenoid inside of the headlight.
      3. Possible that the right side light is physically adjusted all the way down, so it can't point further up when in high beam mode or the left side light is actually pointed to far down. (possible cause: not properly aligned after headlight replacement from a collision).

      @@gftgrill Thank you so much for your detailed reply. Much appreciated.
      1) Yes you are right, my car is equipped with Bi Xenon headlamps.
      2) In the recent test of my flash beam, after 5-8 flashes, i get "Intell Light Inoperative" and my right headlamp no longer light up, unless i restart the car.
      3) Please see a sample of my flash beam --> czcams.com/video/Z1IrBnHmwoI/video.html
      4) i went to a headlight workshop, they open the back cover of my headlamp and saw the wiring all brittle and being exposed and touching each other.

      @@benyap2232 unfortunately around 2010 ish, that generation Mercedes Benz headlights used inadequate wiring. It is a common problem across many models.
      You can see similar here in one of my videos: czcams.com/video/6G_3N0CsgO8/video.html
      You can try to recoat the wires or the faster option is to replace the headlight, but know that a new headlight will have the same issue in time.

      @@gftgrill does recoat the wires works? Or has the short already causing problems else where? I’m still not sure if it’s the wires that causes the one side flash beam or probably the shutter/motor is damage

    • @gftgrill
      @gftgrill  Před 2 lety

      @@benyap2232 I don't know. you could try to separate the wires so they are no longer touching to see if it starts working, but you're correct that the wires touching could have already caused permanent damage to the motor(s) that control the AFS movement.

    • @gftgrill
      @gftgrill  Před 2 lety

      There are no bi-xenon bulbs. Bi-Xenon headlights only refer to the projector. Xenon projectors and Bi-Xenon headlights/projectors use the exact same bulb.
      In your case it's most likely a D1S bulb.
