Just a bunch of old folks reminiscing because at the time we thought these types of songs would always be made. How wrong we were. The year 1968 was full of tragedy and turmoil, but it was music like this that helped us through the storms. The further we get away from the 1960s and 1970s the more we realize how special the music was. The world of music will never travel down this road again. Now where is my AM transistor radio.
So true yet we have to remember how important the sixties were. We went from the stifling fifties to the frightening harsh sixties and also freedom of thought. ❤❤ it’s called a revolution.
It angers me that mainstream oldies radio only plays "Aquarius" and maybe "One Less Bell to Answer" but never this classic that always makes our eyes watery. Marilyn McCoo & Florence LaRue were so beautiful. All five individuals were so blessed and we were blessed to have their music to listen to as well as great surviving film footage such as this.
I was an eight year old little white girl riding in my moms station wagon loving this song. I also remember Diana Ross and the Supremes, Sly and the Family Stone, Friends of Distinction etc. Loved all of it. So grateful to grow up in this era of great music.
I was eight to riding in moms impala covertible sitting in the back with the speaker between the seat blaring this song singing with my sister those were the days!
Yes. Great tune, great delivery, great visual/video. The opening music lines & the lyric 'can you surry' & then 'red, yellow, honey, sassafras & moonshine' . . . it's just awesome. Marilyn McCoo is absolutely wonderful & that yellow garter she's wearing. Oooh yeah!
Listening to this for 1st time in years, along with some of their other songs, their vocals were incredible. And Laura Nyro was a h*** of a songwriter.
Vocals are beautiful. This is the sort of music that still takes you away from your problems. These days people write music on computer, and one producer composing on a computer is very limited compared to the combination of several talented musicians (who really know their instruments) all contributing.
One of the happiest moments of my life, looking back was watching my 8 or 10 year old daughter sitting in her grandmother's chair at the dining room table, doing her homework and singing along to this song I had blasting from our upstairs bedroom!...such fond memories 😅
Another great Laura Nyro penned song. She never quite gets the kudos she deserves. She also wrote Wedding Bell Blues which these guys also covered. Barbra Streisand's Stoney End? Another Nyro tune...genius
I love The Fifth Dimension! ❤ I was 6 when this song came out. My Mom had their records. I too cry when I hear these songs. 😢 Things just aren't the same anymore. There's no love just hate these days. I miss this simpler time. When it was just me my Mom, my sister, and brother.
In 1968 when Stone Cold Picnic was released, there was plenty of Hate to go around. America was fighting and protesting an unnecessary war in Vietnam, MLK and RFK were assassinated, and there was a riot outside the Democratic National Convention. But I'm glad you were too young to know what was going on. Peace Out!!
I was dead when this came out. But, I was born shortly after its release and it was still on the radio in the 70s. I like so much music from before my time. I never enjoyed it when it was new, but at least when I heard it the first time, it was new to me.
I remember hearing this beautiful old school song on day at the age of 22 in the summer of 2002 when I was in the car with my mother. It was a new 2002 Toyota Camry LE that was bought as a company car for my dad. It was a family business. This song made the scenery for an ordinary day otherwise seem enchanted! Good times! ❤️🔥🌞🌕🔥
Me too!! A white girl growing up in love with Motown and the likes. Going to be 69 in August. Loved Soul music since I was 9 years old I believe ❤️🙏🏻👍🏻🥰
My father use to play this song now that I am a grown man, every time I hear it. I remember the days when life was good and peaceful, my best friend my pop's is gone but he instilled in me how to appreciate good music.
This makes me sad and mad! They should've been in when they were eligible. What's sad is now there is only 3 original members left. The RRHF is really messed up!
Great song. Well performed by one of my favorite pop groups of late ‘60s/early ‘70s. Laura Nyro was an excellent songwriter. I’ve liked every rendition of this song including hers.
I am 60. The mid to late 1960,s all of the 1970s and up to the mid 1980,s Those were the best years of music of any generation. They were my years of youth also. I love this song! My memory of it is on a family trip to myrtle beach south carolina when i was 5. My dad always tuned in oldies stations and classic rock in every car we had. We were in a dark green dodge minivan playing name that tune. My mom, siblings and i didn't know this one so dad told us all about the group and told us other songs they recorded. He was the absolute best and we all have our taste in music from him. I was born June 1989 and I was listening to the isley brothers, bb king, chaka khan, the mama's and the papa's, and the list goes on and on. I miss him a lot. A great line up of songs in the top 40 at the time. We needed good music to take our minds off of Vietnam at a time the American casualty rate was at it's highest. My brother was over there at the time.
My older sister had every one of their albums. We had one stereo on the main floor, and one in the basement. The basement stereo was ours for The Beatles, The Moody Blues, The Monkeys, The Fifth Dimension. They had the most amazing, tightly woven harmonies. They taught me about astrology (Age of Aquarius), science (Up, Up and Away) and how to sing my Declaration of Independence. Such amazing vocalists. If our kids and grand kids never take time to listen to our music, they are really missing out on 60's American culture.
It is truly mystifying that memory does not recognize time... Soooo much time has gone by since this lovely piece was recorded but I can see it in my mind as sharply as if it was yesterday. Sigh.....
I was a baby when this song came out in 1968. I vaguely hear it playing at Music 🎶🎵 Radio 77 WABC AM. That song was played by all the radio 📻 personalities there and oldies radio 📻 CBS FM 101.1 played it a lot too.

And the storms continue today ..but iam they will be much worse.
Woooooooo...Maryiln McCoo her voice only outdone by her beauty. Three Octaves...incredible
.
She is indeed lovely! And those eyes...
Oh, I did NOT know she can do three Octaves.
God I miss my youth. 74 and on my way out. But kicking and screaming for more. Tears in my eyes !!!

You're not on your way out!

Must have been something about riding in the station wagon cuz that was exactly what I was thinking when I tuned into this song
Was a bit younger. Remember “Love will Keep Us Together” (1975) riding in a friends moms ‘72 Chevelle Nomad Wagon.
Don’t recall “Muskrat Love” though
You forgot the Isley Brothers ("It's Your Thing").
@@57highland "Who's that Lady?" by the Isley Brother. I love that one.

Classy group of performers. Marilyn and Flo, beautiful as always.
