    You're something special - i watched so many videos trying to understand how this chip is working- yours was the only one that broke it to details and explained the whole process, from A to Z- thank you so much for you time to make this video and hope you can make other videos explaining what to do if battery won't charge (common problem with Dell laptops) when either IC chip is going bad or some mosfets

Perhaps a part 2 where you explain on the battery side of the BQ24780S the function of phase, Hi and Lo mossfet and how a laptop can work on battery while there is a short on the adapter or two protection mosfet side ? Much appreciated. Very best regards.

    Thankyou, I've got a laptop that i was given that I was told had a "bad" motherboard. Everything I've been told points to this component having failed on the motherboard. This gives me a much better understanding of how the logic of this thing works and where to start with figuring everything out with it.

    Thank you for such excellent explanations of these chips/circuits. It would be interesting to see how you would diagnose a laptop that powers on for 3-6 seconds then powers off.
    I have an Acer Predator Helios 300 that does that. The challenge is figuring out why EN1 drops out after 3-6 seconds when the KBC MAINPWON is always 3.3v and 3V_EN_R is always 0v? I need to spend more time understanding how the power controller, KBC and PCH interact during start-up. Are there any references that you can recommend (besides datasheets)?
    Perhaps after reviewing your KBC and power controller videos (and notes I made summarizing them) it will become clearer.

    Thanks for information and tips ! I have a UX330CA motherboard (Asus) . I plug in my Lab Power Supply at and it led flashes 2 white blinks then shuts off. The moment it flashes white led blink , I measure at the input MOSFETS , current sensor 19V and also the 3.3V & 5V at the Coils .Also I Measure the input Voltage of the BQ24780S in pin VCC 19V which its present even after the 3-4 sec which it flashes White Led . Also the same goes for the 6V RGen it stays. The ACOK shows 5V for the 2 flashes one for each! And the ACDRV shows the 24V for the two flashes , one for Each.I found a SMD shorted resistor close to the ACOK which I change to 10K (I saw the typical application Schematic on Datasheet) and still no change.I am checking around the charger IC for shorted components! Any ideas ?

      It looks like you have a completely discharged battery.
      If you have a power supply try recharging it externally for a while and then plug it back to the laptop an connect the adapter.
      If it start to charge, then leave it till its fully charged
      You may still need to replace it anyway if it is old and weak already..
      If all the above did not help then try a new battery replacement

    • @FixTronics
      @FixTronics  Před 4 měsíci

      If you are measuring both pins with each other, then yes you will see a short, because they are connected across a very low resistance (Current Sense Resistor).
      But if you are seeing a short on one or both ACP and ACN to ground, the you main power rail is shorted.
      Your BQ chip is most likely to be ok...

    hi there
    thanks for the detailed information
    I have a lenovo laptop which use this IC and the laptop works on battery, works on batter + charger plugged but does not work with charger plugged and battery unplugged (maybe normal? )
    On Battery plugged+ charger plugged the laptop shows as charging but it is sucking almost no current from charger (if computer shut down, if on, it will suck around 0.8A which is what the MB uses to run (so it runs on charger not on battery). As a result, laptop runs fine but battery charges extremely slow, almost no charge.
    did replace the low and high side mosfets (high one was shorted) but still same result. When I look at phase pin, on an oscilloscope I see a signal going from 0V to around 20V , very sharp peak to 20V and 0V, most of the cycle time being on around battery voltage. So it appears like mosftet are driven for a very short time causing too low current, voltage on the output to battery for it to charge properly.
    could you help with any advices? (I checked also ILIM pin, it has around 0.8V, shorted it to 3.3V (which should disable the limit and only got like 0.2 amps being drawn from charger))
    Could it be that the ic is faulty? Or maybe it gets a limit on the SMBUS? (though, no error in OS (ubuntu with a live usb stick), shows as charging, charger light on and flashes very rare as mentioned in manual)
    Thank you very much

    • @FixTronics
      @FixTronics  Před 2 lety +1

      Hello brother
      Almost all laptops will work with charger plugged battery unplugged, but I am not sure if the one you have is a bit different
      Did you try and replace the battery because it communicates with the ic through the SMBus, so it might be faulty and / or it sends wrong signals about its status.
      Also, the ic might not drive the high and low Mosfets correctly, So if possible, replace the ic just to make sure

    • @FixTronics
      @FixTronics  Před 10 měsíci

      Hi friend
      If your laptop is charging or at least tries to charge then the charging circuit is most likely to be good unless there is something wrong with ILIM charge and discharge current limit.
      Try first and change the battery if possible, because the battery itself can start and stop the charging process through the serial communication with the EC chip

    • @FixTronics
      @FixTronics  Před rokem +1

      It might be the charging IC but there are other possibilities. Check the Battery Mosfet and check the data bus lines at the battery connector (should be 3.3v).
      If the battery is fully discharged try charging it with external power supply first

    I have a case, I replaced the BQ and the laptop is working fine on both battery and charger. I can see the charging sign in windows but the battery is not taking any current (10mA) therefore it is not charging. The charging light is blinking so I though it was a faulty battery so I bought a new one but unfortunately the batery is still not charging. I checked every pin of the BQ, PIN 1 : 19.3V
    Pin 2 : 19.3V
    Pin 5 : 3V
    Pin 6: 2.6V

      Vout=Vin*(R2/R1+R2)

    • @FixTronics
      @FixTronics  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi
      All voltages you mentioned are correct
      and about BATDRV, yes it is correct as long as the adapter is connected and it should go to around 20v or so when the adapter is disconnected, and you said the laptop do work on battery, so that confirms your BATDRV is correct when the adapter is disconnected..
      You should check the HIDRV and LODRV when the adabter is connected.
      Those HIDRV and LODRV are responsible for charging the battery by driving two Mosfets.
      The LODRV source pins are connected to GND and the HIDRV drain pins are connected to 19v
      The source of HIDRV Mosfet and drain of LODRV Mosfet are connected together, and this goes to the battery and to pin phase of the BQ ic

    I have a tricky one.
    Asus q501la - i found a shorted 1uf cap. Replaced it
    It was in parallel with another 10uf cap.
    Got everything working great but realized on a charger the battery will stay at %.
    It will run with or without battery with charger.
    When unplugged battery drains normal, but plugged in only maintains current level never charges.
    It is not charger, it is not battery.
    It cannot be inside windows / drivers. Wont charge even if off.
    It will boot up hours later with whatever charge its on.
    I tried 2 new batteries that came with around 70% charge, which is why I know it will eventually get to zero if i ran enough without charger.
    What communicates to open up the pathway to send charging voltage to battery?

    • @FixTronics
      @FixTronics  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Hi brother
      Try replacing the BQ chip and while at it check the charging Mosfets
      The battery communicate with EC chip about its charge level and how much current it requires to be recharged and then EC chip will send commands to the BQ ic, then the BQ ic will start driving the charging Mosfets...

    • @TechProFury
      @TechProFury Před 10 měsíci +1

      So... i replaced the Charging ic since it was a few bucks.
      No change, i tested the acdrv and was getting 19v.
      So i went back and sure enough the first dc mosfet was passing 19v, but when i tested the drain to src, it was .5ohm.
      Pulled a donor n channel mosfet from an dell board.
      After this the voltage on acdrv pin is now 23.5v. Not 25.
      But laptop is charging bat now. Should i worry about 23.5v on acdrv.
