I brought my cousin from Jacksonville to New York City for the first time a few years back. We were walking downtown Manhattan and a huge cockroach walked out in front of us. Looks like the same flying cockroaches we get in Florida. He saw it and gladly gave it a stomp. We kept walking and laughed at how nasty it was, looked backed and two football sized rats tackled each other for it's carcass.
Steel trash containers which seal tightly is the only solution, to the infestation problem. Rats chew through bags, plastic & drywall to search for food. They climb & leap quite well. Best to relocate to a rural area. Areas of mass populations, suffer from careless citizens.

I saw videos from some of the local residents in chicago. They are actually building little cat houses Outdoors to keep the feral cat around their home. They don't feed them of course, let them eat rats. But those kitties must think they're at a buffet as well!

Releasing feral cats sounds good(I love cats) BUT they’d kill off all the natural prey that can’t fight them off. A better idea is getting trained professionals with rat cats, rat dogs or those weird skinny things

Use the same system to clean out garbage by catching whatever crap is on the tracks in filters so it does not go out to sea. 2. Make sewers inhospitable and make sure they cannot get in homes through plumbing. Create engineering think tank on how to do it cost effectively. 3. Bring back rat catching dogs for park systems and dumpsters. Create an insane amount of jobs and make sure handlers get paid very well and have EXCELLENT health plans. Dogs of terrier background and mutts in the pound with a knack for making rats scream for mercy are welcome. Volunteer brigades also welcome. Dogs shall have free vet care and the antidote to poisons on hand, just in case the ratty little bastard has nibbled poison. NYC's finest. NYC's bravest. And now, NYC's noblest. Redo the trash system so it operates with pneumatic tubes like on Roosevelt Island. Make sure the suction is powerful enough to make rat lungs go pop. Find a way to mechanically sort the dead rats and mice. Show no mercy. 4. Encourage more predators. Breed them if necessary. More hawks!! More falcons!! Turn NYC into a deathtrap for rodents!! THIS MEANS WAR!!
Isn't dogs like terriers and other small breeds are bred to hunt rats? I don't think many cats actually hunt rats they hunt mice. Rats little too big for cats.
There are larger cat breeds like Maine coons, Norwegian forest, and the illegal in several cities Bengal breed which is half Asian leopard cat or a couple generations down. Maybe ratting isn't a job for all cats but bigger breeds could help out.
