    Have had a Turbo X SC from new, well 10 years now and agree with pretty much everything. The seats actually were a bit better when new but still lacked a little bit of support. Mine has the optional carbon-leather dashboard which makes it a lot more special to be in so look around, maybe you can get one also :)
    Also be prepared for the prop shaft bearings to fail which are only changeable to some extent (new shaft is a blow below belt, done it, 2500€) but they can be tuned a bit so that the bearings can be changed (actually the main dealer advised this as they agreed that the bearing issue was ridiculous). If I remember correctly some parts of the propshaft are the same with BMW X-drive.
    All in all it's an amazing car!
    PS: Mine is showing about 21 mpg (11l/100km) combined with the ODO just crossed 200 000km :)

    This is a few tips from a former saab-tech doing XWD's almost weekly:
    - Do a partial XWD oil change like every ~18 000 miles, and the filter and cleaning every ~38 000 miles (converted from km). A good cleaning gets rid of almost all problems.
    - Sticking shifter is an easy fix, and requires very few tools and knowledge. The shifter assembly sticking into gearbox is replaced with everything still in place. Part can be semi-expensive though.
    - The "one of two thousand" actually exist. Some had it, seen it personally.
    - Do regular engine oil changes, like every 6000 - 9000 miles. Cam chain replacement is costly! :)
    EDIT: Changed intervals due to mathematical error.

    • @multinjok
      @multinjok Před 6 lety

      Oils for XWD are very expensive it is just stupid and wasteful changing them every 5000 miles :O and about oil change every 1500 miles!? are you serious about that? What a waste of oil.

    • @AutoAutopsy
      @AutoAutopsy  Před 6 lety +1

      1,500 miles is too excessive for oil changes, I tend to agree with multinjok on that. That'd mean I'd change my oil essentially every month!

    • @JoakimSH
      @JoakimSH Před 6 lety +6

      Yes, in all seriousness on both claims (but made a major mathematical convertion error, I edited the first post). I live in Sweden which is roughly the same latitude as southern Alaska. That means we get pretty hefty temperature changes, and alot of cold starts. A grain of salt can absolutely be taken to my claims, but take into account that I make these claims with money out of the question and simply what might be best for the car. Every owner makes his own choice. :)
      - And yes, Haldex oil comes at a premium. I'm perfectly aware of that. One can check which has the cheapest shelf price between GM / Opel / Saab, cause usually they all charge differently. BUT in terms of keeping the Haldex running with a smile, it needs to be taken care of now and then. At least not in non-california climate. From my decade's worth of experience, 100 000 km/~62 000 miles is not something done problem free. And the XWD rear axle is really expensive. Also, one bottle will generally do both one partial and one complete change.
      So, to sum up with double checked numbers:
      - Engine oil change: 10 000 - 15 000 km / 6000 - 9000 miles.
      - XWD partial oil change - removing pump, remount and fill -(3dl/10 oz): 30 000 km / ~18 000 miles (roughly every two oil changes)
      - XWD open up (oil cover), cleaning, and replacing filter (6-7 dl/20-23 oz): 60 000 km / ~38 000 miles (every major service interval)
      Should you have any questions, I happen to have the oil/fuel expert from Saab (and some GM) and a few of the engine developers/calibrators as colleagues and I can get back on the matter. They've done some of the durability/endurance testing as well.

      Joakim, any chance you could help me out with the sticking shifter fix? I've got an Aero XWD and sticky shifter is part of the issue. The main issue though is the 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear shifting with difficulty. The shifter is not going in smoothly.
      Thanks in advance :)

    • @JoakimSH
      @JoakimSH Před 5 lety +2

      @@jakubkowalczyk2632
      I think I can, but it depends whether it's sticking sideways/back and forth, or if it's rather just when syncros are engaging. Regardless, an oil change is a good start. Further I'd say that you could either try a QuadraLube 75W-oil. It's known to ease shifts and is generally praised for it's function. On the other hand it's a GL-5 oil, making it eat on yellow metal - albeit not especially fast. I run it now in mine, but it's a matter of taste. It might help, it might not. Some boxes carry some damage, and no oil in the world can fix damage.

  • @deweyfoulk3630

    Sounds like your new Saab is actually pretty good. Plastic squeaks are annoying and tedious to chase down. I used to put a drop of silicone spray on the end of a tiny paint brush and feed it into the joints between between parts then clean off the excess. Just make sure the lube does not eat plastic. I laughed (not at you) when I heard you describe your shifter because it reminded me of all times I fixed sticky ignition switches in 99s because of sugary drinks spilled in the consoles that the owners never mentioned. I know, probably not related but maybe you could access the part of the shifter under the shift boot to clean and lube it. On your cross wheel drive, do the differentials require more than periodic oil changes?

    • @AutoAutopsy
      @AutoAutopsy  Před 6 lety +1

      Haha! Thanks for the tip on the door handles. I was told to do the XWD service every other oil change, or what will probably end up being once a year/10-15k miles. I initially heard you didn't need to do it for 30-50k though, which I suspect is false. Better safe than sorry, especially considering this TX is a bit higher mileage

    I agree with all of your points about the interior, the mileage, the sticky shifter (mine just started doing this after 10 years) etc. but I am happy with the seats. I still find them extremely comfortable after a decade of driving. I've never serviced the XWD other than whatever's done at the "major service" intervals. Most importantly, the Turbo-X has been 100% reliable for the decade! One point though: when they say 93 octane gas THEY MEAN IT. I figured 91 would do and had to replace all of the injectors. Not the car's fault: cheap owner's fault. After that I switched to 93 and no problems. This car's a keeper. I see no reason to sell it and replace it with a new non-Saab. What am I going to get? A BMW? I actually tried to test drive a 5 series before buying the Turbo-X (I've driven only Saabs since 1972--bought my first V-4 96 new for $2737) but the dealer had no sticks in stock, which I found laughable for the "performance" brand and the salesman was so greasy and wearing a pinky ring, I almost barfed. So I stuck with Saab. Glad I did. You made a smart buy, though looking at the dash does get stale after a while and I wish it had integrated Blue Tooth (the buttons are there, but....) and Apple Play and a modern touch screen so the Sirius XM graphics look as good as they do in my wife's new Honda Odyssey. The green on black dash looks like a '90s era computer. Oh, and the Bose sound system SUCKS...it's frustrating when I'm traveling and the rental car has a better sound system!

      Before my Turbo-X I had a 9-3 Aero FWD V-6. Didn't enjoy it at all. Too front-heavy, too much over-torqued side to side movement (I know there's a name for it) upon acceleration. I actually better enjoyed my previous 9-3 Vector 4 cylinder stick. Fast, light and handled better...

    Seriously, dude you can up your mpg by being in 5th gear at 30mph (on flat/downhill) and 6th gear at 40mph - my average on my turbo x is now showing on the dash as 26.6mpg (and I treat myself to some high rev acceleration too! Just make sure you're in the lowest possible gear when cruising! - just lower the gear if you need to accelerate at all. Maintaining 1k revs minimum = better mpg. (I was at like 20mpg not long ago)
    Another gripe about the seats for me is the fact that they're electric - seems unnecessarily over-engineered when manual-moving seats are quicker to adjust and won't break as easily (mine haven't yet, but it's on my mind going forward). Would like to get custom ones in the future.

    You don't have "premium leather" seats, which were specific to TX for 2008 I believe, later available to other cars as well even in other colors than just back (or even color combination - shark grey, relatively rare), but those are a bit better quality.
    What I maybe miss a bit in a 93 post-facelift is seat ventilation. I definitely know it was prepared to be there, 2003+ cars have ventilation on the display of ACC :D that never shows up since cars never had that option, but preparation was there to include it (as well as reversing camera, dead angle monitoring, adaptive cruise control... - none of which ever happened). At least you can be happy for a bold steering wheel and 345mm brakes in the front and autoleveling back suspension (which I assume you no longer have?) and improve the interior with Hirsch additions (expensive stuff!) that were actually DEFAULT on the British special version called 93 Carlsson (saloon only, white black grey only, silver color TX shaped wheels and only standard exhaust tips) which also looks brutally good and gives the interior that complete unique feel that original TX is a bit missing.

    My Turbo X averages 8.2 litres per 100km, around 28 US mpg, in mixed town and motorway driving. I’m really happy with that, considering my other toy, a 2009 Chrysler 300 Srt8, uses about 50% more.
    Totally agree about the shitty interior plastics though, embarrassing on a premium car. That’s GM for you.

    Your car does not have the premium leather interior that was actually TurboX exclusive. Those are a lot nicer, although, not more grip, but don't look that bad. The 9-3 is a small car, the 9-5 is huge, the seats needed to be small to fit. The seats in 9-5 02-10 have the best seats, sans 9000 Aero. Don't be fooled, the Aero seats in the ng9-5 sux, I have those and they are so uncomfortable.
    The stickiness is due to the a worn part. This is not the right part (it's for FWD, you need the XWD version):
    www.maptunparts.se/transmission/vaxelmanovrering/100588/vaxelforare-saab-9-3-2003-6-vxl-f40-fwd.html
    Had to replace that on my parents 9-3 V6, it's like that on all F40s. Replace it and shifting will be a lot better.
    The gas tank is 58 litres, on BioPower cars, it's 61. The V6 XWD uses a lot of gas, even in FWD-mode since a lot of parts of the XWD are still moving. Using less than 1 litre/10km is great mileage for a B284 XWD. You don't buy a TurboX for long haul great mileage, you buy it for the fun of it.
    This is the plaque you're missing :
    dbstatic.no/63641541.jpg?imageId=63641541&width=512&height=308
    Hirsch have a lot of upgrades for the interior. You have to remember the TurboX was more or less just some makeup on an already aging model. Sure, they updated the interior in 2007, but most of it looks like an afterthought, just look at the area where the HPD was located on pre-07, now it's just covered by some plastic and the line on the dash seems totally out of place.
    Also, GM did not allow SAAB to spend bazillions on development, this was a really cheap way to make a "special" car, that really isn't all that special.

    • @AutoAutopsy
      @AutoAutopsy  Před 6 lety +1

      Very true on all of that, I appreciate it, with the exception of the leather part. I know the upgraded leather was a very rare and costly option that very few 9-3's have; I don't think it came from factory on TX's!

    My 88 Turbo Supra 5 speed got about 25mpg mixed, about 30mpg costing around 90mph. Can't stress enough how important alignment is, but also there was a notable difference when I put full synthetic gear oil in the transmission. Very quickly noticed on the highway for long tripps the shifter didn't get warm anymore and only just fethering the throttle after I switched.
    Something else you have to take in consideration is that the laws of thermodynamics is a bitch. My opinion is you do get worst gas mileage, but if it's properly running it shouldn't be that much worse. The real problem is that you're just going faster all the time without realizing.
    FYI, I drove my Supra like a grandma and all my friends made fun of me for it. But it also had a two stage fuel pump and two stage injectors, passing 3500rpm or pressing the gas pettle past a certain point it would go into WOT mode and spill gas into the engine.. fun :-)
