- Welcome to the commentary video on the Pokemon Fire Red Elite Four Round 2 (E4R2) World Record Speedrun! In this video I provide commentary on the run, provide insight into the strategies used, explain the decisions made, point out mistakes and basically just explain what I'm doing to do and why. The amount of mega kicks landing is absolutely absurd
I love how during the Growlithe catch, "present" Gunner was calmly explaining his decision making during the run while the "past" Gunner was literally on the verge of a heart attack.

I love Pokemon speedruns, the thing I dislike a little is that the runs that get uploaded on YT are usually from Twitch and are mostly chat interactions (which obviously makes sense if you attempt to run the game countless times you cant explain everything everytime)
So I really, really appreciate you taking the time and adding commentary to the whole run

I've always been impressed by pokemon speedruns when the stats appear for a split second and the runner goes "Yep, correct stats". Like wait, what? I saw nothing!

he’s probably not checking every stat individually, i’d guess he’s checking a few stats and basing the remaining stats on the numbers he looked at. helps when you know what to look for

Excellent video, love watching the thought processes during runs. One of the things that makss pokemon runs so interesting is the runners knowledge of the game and forcing them to improvise on the fly.

During this run, he admitted to using a computer to look at rng scenarios the game produces.
Real speed runners don’t do that during a run. You should only use the console and the game.
@@bucsfan2565 well, you don't get to decide who is a 'real' speed runner and who isn't. Rng manip in fr/lg is allowed. So he is simply following the rules. You don't have to agree with that rule, but calling someone a fake runner who is using the tools that are given sounds very ignorant.
You can always watch the 'no rng manip' category.

I think rng manip is fine. Look at what I wrote. He used a computer program to aid him by providing the rng scenarios. 2:20 It’s frowned upon. For this game, you should only use a game boy advance and the game.

My favorite part was a few weeks back when he had the big loss to Ttar I asked if EQ could be routed in as it was more consistent for Ttar, a couple weeks later it was routed in and Gunner had the run because of the new EQ strats
Where does he obtain the magikarp? Before he reaches pewter city, he doesn’t catch a magikarp and after passing Mt. moon, he has one on his team.
Technically Speedrunners spend all their time playing games but try to spend the least time in it
Pretty much the same for any time based sport, Michael Phelps spent thousands upon thousands of hours swimming just so he could spend less time swimming during races.

Holy shiet, I've just went through 3-4 runs today (in the background) of different pokemon games You play, only to find out my left ear is somehow malfunctioning... I thought it's the amount of time I had my headphones on, but it turned out to be the effect of mono-sound pokemon games, streamed only to my right ear and my brain is confused xD

Watching the HR monitor is fascinating
How do you never get encounters in the grass after surge? Is there a repel active or is it just luck?
The first 6 tiles of grass on a new route are only like 1% to give an encounter each. It's happened before.
Ever consider running Colosseum or XD since you have so many of the gen 3 records? I know they’re so different but seems like it might be something you thought about before.

I think you need a certain amount of pokemon to either fight the elite 4 or challenge all the gym leaders

I was also wondering why you couldn't just buy more x-specials, just goes to show how little I know about pokemon speedrunning. Probably too much of a time sink/risk for the small amount of possible time save/perceived benefit.
Literally just not enough cash in the route, I even buy some extras where possible

At 40:00 you talk about how you need to mega kick Drowzee, but doesn’t Bite deal the same amount of damage? Am I missing something? Drowzee is Psychic type...
In this game, dark type moves are always special and normal type moves are always physical. In gen 4 they introduced the split, and that’s when Bite became a physical move. The calcs would be different for bite and mega kick because of this

Stella Biderman no problem! :) the way I remember it is that if the type was an eeveelution type (all of them including the gen 4 ones), then it was special, plus dragon was also special. All the rest of the types were physical before the split
@@palpitoadman321 That's a really weird rule of thumb, but one I'll use going forward.
Is there a specific reason to evolve Eevee into Flareon?
He needs a certain amount of Pokémon caught - 60 to be exact - to unlock the side quest on sevii Island and the elite 4 round 2 respectively.
To get these 60 Pokémon as fast as possible it's helpful to have some stone evolutions as they're faster than those by lvl up.
Evolving the Eevee into Flareon is just the fastest Eeveelution he can use
@@donsimon3919 he can turn Eeevee into Jolteon or Vaporeon too. It's the same process different stone
Flareon has a good attack stat and be useful at weakening certain wild encounters with Quick Attack, particularly when a run visits the Power Plant to catch Pikachu / Voltorb / Magnemite.
The other Eeveelutions have weaker attack. Gunner looked into Jolteon or simply using Eevee QA STAB and evolving it later, but it wasn't worth it.

Because in order to access the postgame content that makes the E4 stronger you need to have 60 Pokémon in your Pokédex. That counter keeps track of the ones he catches.

why do you use rare candies on all those pokemon before the elite 4?
1) he needs 60 Pokémon caught for the National Pokédex. The candies help evolve Pokémon to increase the caught number
2) he was already in the menu, if I remember correctly, so he chose to candy his Pokémon then to save time so he doesn’t have to menu later.

ye this is gen 5
E4R2 means Elite 4 Round 2 so you have to beat the elite 4 two times

IIRC most pokemon speedrunners use the gamecube GB attachment. Gunnar mentioned the SP at some point, idk if he meant gameboy SP tho
He’s using a real cart on GameCube gameboy player with an SP for controller
Emulator is not considered a legitimate run, so his record wouldn’t have counted on an emulator

Excited for the video upload but was kind of disappointed that it wasnt just a commentary over the original stream. I feel like it would have been entertaining to rewatch your and chat's reactions to crazy events. I feel like adding a new facecam recording doesnt really add much to the video.

That would be more a reaction video, which isn't really the purpose of what gunner was going for. It would be very chaotic as well because you'd have the original gameplay, gunner's original voice and all the alerts all while gunner is reacting and providing commentary. I've been trying to get gunner to react to his first ever Yellow 1:58 world record from like 6 years ago though.
@@Arkadius500 I meant the visual reactions, not all of the alerts and his original commentary. Just mute that audio and just watch the reactions. For someone like me who has no clue how lucky a certain event might have been, his and chats reactions help emphasize how lucky it was

Couldn’t you get mewtwo first before you head to the isle for the sapphire and ruby therefore it would gain a few additional level and since you have to get mewtwo for the elite four it shouldn’t be a time loss getting it earlier

It's the ones you always get, like the starter + starter evolutions, Mewtwo etc

You need national dex and then you level up with max friendship

@@ayyildiz1523 level up, give is items like protein, iron etc... don't let it die, walk a lot of steps, and I think there are other ways. Just google how to maximize friendship in fire red/leaf green and you should find more stuff
