De VPRO trekt samen met schrijver en historicus Geert Mak opnieuw door Europa en de Europese geschiedenis. De nieuwe serie pakt de draad op waar de vorige eindigde: in 1999. Het optimisme tijdens de eeuwwisseling maakte plaats voor angst en verwarring na de aanslagen op de Twin Towers, de kredietcrisis, een toenemende stroom vluchtelingen en een steeds slechtere relatie met Rusland. Maar kun je geschiedenis herkennen als je er middenin zit? Als niemand nog weet hoe het gaat aflopen?
De serie 'In Europa, de geschiedenis op heterdaad betrapt' laat ooggetuigen aan het woord die zonder dat ze het doorhadden middenin een belangrijke historische gebeurtenis belandden. Wekelijks publiceren we nieuwe video's uit de nieuwe reeks en eerder uitgezonden seizoenen.

Ik wil het in nederlands zeggen maar mij fouten nog de woorden. Part of the desaster lies in the fact that a lot of Brits blamed the foreigners for taking "their" jobs instead of blaming their country fellowmen for trying the get the cheapest work force. Now we see it more than ever that the Brits don't take these low paíd jobs whereas the employees still aren't willing to pay decent wages.

Dit geeft erg veel informatie over hoe de politiek in de digitale wereld in elkaar steekt. Erg bedankt voor het maken van deze fantastische documentaire!
If 'The Powers that Be' wanted Brexit to work, the tone of this documentary would have been different. We could have pulled together and demonstrated to the rest of Europe what possible but instead, nothing has changed. The rich get richer and the poor stay poor.
Geen mooie maar wel goede documentaire. Zou goed zijn dit ook op Middelbare Scholen in Maatschappijleer op te nemen.
Haha 😂 mijn god. Beetje kritisch zijn mag wel hoor. Dit is geen documentaire maar een opiniestuk waar feiten bewust worden achtergelaten en het zo in elkaar is gezet dat het verhaaltje mooi klopt. Laat je niet in de luren leggen

Ehm... ja, mensen in het pro-Europese kamp dachten dat ze in het Verenigd Koninkrijk in de meerderheid waren... en dat blijkt niet het geval te zijn. Jammer, maar ja, het is nu eenmaal zo.

This isn't actually a documentary it is a story interpreting real events in a very specific way. It ignores the huge surge in support for UKIP in preceding elections and pretends that only the election campaign made the difference. It makes out as though leave fought 'unfairly' and the remain campaign was 'fair'. Remain focused on the economy and trying to label leave voters Little Englanders and xenophobes. Leave focused on being free from the EU. Remain couldn't have done any different because a campaign aimed at promoting the EU wouldn't have worked and they knew it.
The 20 miles of water that is the English Channel / Le Manche, however you want to call it, has shaped the UK differently from mainland Europe. A lot of ordinary people feel different from Continental Europe. Most of us, even the leave voters, feel some affinity with Europeans, we just didn't want to be in a supra national political body. So please don't believe that without Cummings the vote would have been different and remain 'should' have won. The British voter is remarkably conservative (with a small 'c') and it takes a long time for them to get used to a new idea. I think this is in part because of our stupid First Past The Post electoral system which means a new party will not get any MPs so people pick the least worst from two parties: Labour or Conservative. I suspect that if the referendum had been delayed to the next parliament, and people had had longer to get used to it, then leave would have won convincingly. But then that is only my opinion. A 'what-if'. Not too dissimilar to this portrayal of the Brexit referendum purporting to be a documentary.
This documentary is a nasty piece of work, it isn't honest. Hypocrisy at its finest
Cambridge Analytica did have a big impact. Brexit is based on a pack of lies. Period. Ordinary people pay the price, wealthy tax evaders are happy. Greed and stupidity have won.

And of course Remainers weren't influenced by anything except God's own truth that the EU is the best thing since sliced bread? You do realise that Leave spent less than Remain? Leave £13m and Remain £19m. And the there was Cameron's £9m pro-remain mail drop to every house in the country. But let's ignore that, shall we? It doesn't fit with what you want to be the truth. But if you would like to think that CA through Facebook influenced a demographic who are significantly lower users of social media than young Remain voters then please indulge yourself. It doesn't make sense but if it makes you feel better.

You have the right to believe what you want to believe whether it is true or not and saying 'period' shows you exercise this right with full conviction. Well done you for your strength of feeling. But that is all it is - your feeling.

Ordinary people pay the price whether it is foolishly remaining in the EU (in my opinion) or Leaving (foolishly, in your opinion). Tax evaders always find a way. If you don't realise it is going on both inside and outside of the EU the you are rather naïve.

I certainly didn't vote for personal gain and as the Remain campaign was based primarily upon economics, which Leave voters rejected, it would appear that I am not alone. If anything it is the Remain voters who were only interested in what is in their pocket. You can still say voting Leave was stupid, that is your gift, but I think the evidence is that Leave voters were less greedy than Remain voters.
