It's a really simple message but one which we don't often hear - Immigrants are human beings! They're flesh and blood and love. Obviously. But they're often talked about in a way which dehumanises them. This swarm which is invading our country. Freddie Mercury was born in Zanzibar (real name Farrokh Bulsara). Damn immigrants! Coming over here and becoming a singer in one of the great British rock bands. And Mo Farah. Born in Somalia and one of the greatest long distance runners ever. That wasn't the name he was born with and there's an interesting story there about how he was trafficked as a child under a false name. Stories like his should remind us to be compassionate towards immigrants. Doesn't work like that though. Immigrants are human beings. Some people need to be reminded of that and I love the Idles for doing just that.
