      Hey Andy
Thanks so much for checking in dude!!
That’s amazing to know about your setups, I assumed you just have the one setup for everything and that was what I was aiming for, but I couldn’t get just the one setup to work as well as two?! Your style and approach has been a huge influence and your pro board has helped me to progress with confidence. Do you mind if I ask what wheels you use for your two setups please? Do you have the factory 8.75 mini logo trucks on no matter what?? Also is there a new graphic coming? I notice your board has been out of stock for a bit? Thanks so much for tuning in dude, I’ve subscribed to your channel (must be the most under rated CZcams channel in history??!! )

When I got back into skating, after a 25 year absence, it took me 5 boards and setups to find the right setup. First board was just like the one I had when I skated in the 1990s. Huge mistake. Nearly had to have knee surgery because of a wreck. Because it just doesn't fit my size and abilities anymore. I started going wider, longer and more stable. It still took more boards and setups, but I finally found one that feels solid under me, and allows me to try tricks I want to do. After the first board, they are all shaped boards.

Love how you found a setup you liked, but kept looking for different boards, different shapes and continued to experiment with your setup.
Love how you've never been overly attached to one board.

I'm 31, 90-ish kilos, 6ft tall with 11.5 UK shoes for context. So on the bigger side for a skater. My setup when I was a teenager was way smaller and never suited me and it ultimately contributed to me quitting skating until coming back to in this past 2 years.
    My typical allrounder setup is:
-8.5" Zero deck (nice concave, mirrored tails so both sides skate the same)
-Indy Hollows with hard Bones bushings (stock Indy bushings are awful)
    -1/4" risers
    -Spitfire 53mm, 101D hardness wheels
    -Bones Redz bearings
It's a nice board for street for me because it's light enough to get a decent pop, but I tend to stick to bowls if there's one available because it's just fun to bomb around them. I recently got a 10" Heroin Curb Killer 2 deck and the parts to go with it for something more cruisy and bowly but have yet to really put it to work. You definitely feel secure while standing on it.

I have many set ups, first was a 1983 Powell Skull & Sword, many were hurt on it so I traded it for a Zorlac Metallica I got in 1986 I use as an all around and on ramps with 60mm rat bones both have. All 169 Indy trucks I use, now with Swiss ceramics, 1/4” risers and Ricta 60mm 78a,s. I don’t Ollie either, mainly cruise, ramp, street and bowl. I need good pads so I can get balls deep in learning without injury.

Hi Jon, thanks for this great video.. I've had a similar journey since getting back into skating after several years. I'd always had an 8 inch popcicle deck which did the the job fine.. However, I just get the feeling these days that some more width, longer wheel base and bigger wheels will be where its at for the bigger ramps and bowls. I'm feeling that having two boards in the boot instead of one is going to be ace! Thanks again!!

Jon! Love this video. 46 year old here that stepped on a board for the first time since junior high this year, April 12, 2020. No surf background though. Just over weight. Your progression, although much further along than mine, seems so familiar. I find the flat land tricks to be much more difficult to nail down. I've really enjoyed learning to carve and do things on transition ramps. I have a very inconsistent Rock To Fakie, Rock 'N Roll, 50/50, and Feeble. I just recently started playing in a full 4' mini ramp. Not very good at that though. I am on an 8.5" pop sickle. Cold weather and Snow is starting to hit in Northern U.S., so now I'm focusing on flatland stuff in doors at my office.
Andy Anderson is such an inspiration to watch. I may have to check out his board.
Thanks for the joy and inspiration. Glad I found your channel. I've been loving the community of us middle-agers learning to skateboard. Keep it Up!

Hey Ken, I’m 40. Haven’t skated since 2000. Skated flat / street for years in the ‘90s on skinny boards. I was 285 but down to 195 and began skating again-now mini ramps, bowls, and flat again. I have bounced around on so many sizes (starting w Welcome shaped boards-which are very cool; then back to the skinny popsicles of the ‘90s: 7.875, 8.125, 8.25, & 8.38)-none of which provide the comfort & confidence as the Andy Anderson. I ride the 8.45 w mini logo 8.38s and 53mm wheels (Bones and Spitfire Formula 4)-there’s really nothing else close to it’s feeling (an 8.8” Welcome board rides like a 8.6”-great on the ramp/pools, but still too beefy for me to flip or get more than a foot or so of pop on my ollie). The AA has a total “locked in” feeling; I recommend the 8.45 for someone riding street (it behaves like an 8.25” board)-little bit more room for your feet at the bolts, but excellent responsiveness-esp to us older, heavier, often more flat-footed-landing skaters. I’ll be jumping on another 8.45 when more are available. Good luck man

I skated a lot in the mid 90s, mainly park skating, got an intermediate decent level and then, never quitted, but started skating much more sporadically, also switched to longboarding in my early 40's. Then they built 3-years ago this beautiful brand new park 15 min from home and I seriously got the stoke again.I think I can say that I am skating as much as I did 25 years ago when I started. ll be 50 in a few days and hope to be able to skate still for many years. I wish I could have a couple of different set ups since I skate the street area AND the bowls at my local..prices are through the roof in Turkey where I live and the skate shops barely get any stock in anymore because it's all imported and the lira is so weak against the dollar. My tail is almost gone and I'm currently holding out for an 8.5 width deck of which there are none in stock and as for wheels my previous pair had worn down so small I was desperate and just took the 54mm 99A bones STF; a little harder and larger than ideal really. Still, I am progressing on all fronts especially for a man of 41. I am thoroughly enjoying the videos!

Funny enough, I have two board setups (not intentionally) because the set of trucks i bought for my 8.0” street deck were the wrong size, they were the indy 149 8.5” trucks, so as a result i had to buy a new set of proper sized indy 139’s. Then it had me thinking maybe i should get an 8.5” shaped deck to make a crusier with my spare trucks, so i did, however the indy 149 on a 8.5” board is insanely heavy!! When i went back to the 8.0” deck with the 139’s my ollies where much higher and i was much more comfortable with the lighter set up. So ive pretty much scraped all the money i paid for the 8.5” setup and thats a $170 ill never get back. Now i want the hollow indy 139’s so badly, a cycle that never ends

Very interesting to hear this. Like you, I have a surfing background and started skateboarding very late. You skate a lot wider than I do - I skate an 8.25 wide deck all the time. But for pool skating (love that!) a dedicated wider board with bigger wheels makes perfect sense. For halfpipe I would not go wider than 8.5 but having heard what you say about your >9.0 decks I should give a wider board a try.

Definitely worth trying a wider board and bigger wheels. I ride a 8" deck for street and 9" deck for bowls. I get a lot more stability on the wider board. When used to skate the 8" deck in the bowls and could do stalls and small carving, but the bigger bowls (7' & 9') felt unstable. Going to a 9" board with 58m wheels really helped me. I was carving farther and higher than I ever had on the 8" the first time I used it.

On that I learned drop ins, little to medium carves, pumping and kick turns. I can also do tiny ollies, but that's pretty much it. I'm not too focused on the street skating, doing flipping tricks and that stuff, my main goal is to get good at riding bowls, step up my carving and start a few lip tricks. Now I want to get a suitable board. Ideally a whole set up. Would the Santa Cruz roskopp shape be a good beginners bowl riders choice or is that maybe too advanced? And any recommendations on trucks/wheels? - Love your videos btw!!

    • @JonBishopSkate
      @JonBishopSkate  Před 4 lety +1

      Great stuff dude,
Yeah, anything you like the look of will work a treat, I like 9.2 to 9.5 ish wide. A shaped board with a fatter tail may inspire confidence and get you stoked on the surf look. A longer wheel base (15inch) may also afford you a wider stance and more stability. See if you can grab a go on a mates bowl style setup and then if you like it get one of those! Bigger wheels (58 to 60mm) and a grippy duro (97a) also helps, slimeballs are fast and come in every size and colour. Indy trucks turn great and a 1/4 riser will stop the wheel bite. Santa Cruz do some great looking pre-issues, the 9.5 pre issue goes really well and has a nice concave and a useable nose kick. The flight boards last well and there are plenty of crackers, you may well get on well with the 9.2 I feature here ? Let me know how you get on, happy shopping !!

Also an older, taller skater, I'm now only really looking at bowls and transition for the sake of my knees and ankles. I've been looking at wider boards with a longer wheelbase for stability. Was trying to decide between the Madness decks and the 246 Flight/Andy Anderson stuff from Powell. Your vid saved me from experimenting, I'll be going straight for Andy's 9" model. Many thanks. 👍
I've heard that the flight decks can be nasty for splinters when you get down to the composite layers. Is that something you've experienced?

Yeah, I found the flight decks to be awesome all round. The durability is really great, I am big and clumsy and crash a lot and the deck is in really good shape. Andy designed the tail to be able to be sanded back once it gets a bit of razor on it as it’s square. It’s a really big tail so you don’t miss the quarter-inch when it’s sanded back?! I’m 6,3 and the 15” base feels really good for the bowl!

Hey man I was only looking for information on the Peralta x Andy Anderson "Heron" deck but I really enjoyed hearing about your skate experience + background. Seeing the different boards you went through and your retroactive takes on each one was really cool!
As far as the Andy Anderson boards, it was awesome that you went over two different setups and that you're sticking with them! I'm about to pick up my first one myself but I was wondering if you knew anything about what the freestyle guys might put on their Heron... My quick background is that I'm a relatively novice skater. I've used a "Dusters Locos Chaz 32" Cruiser Complete" (VERY sick board by the way, but it's a little hard to find) as my favorite mode of transportation whenever I have to go somewhere (unless it's for work or it's raining/snowing). I've ridden for probably 4 or 5 years now all over my town and the next one over, and I've been to skate parks maybe a few dozen times so I'm quite comfortable with a lot of the basics. Only thing is I never took tricks too seriously, part of the reason being that my cruiser is a little on the big side which is a tad intimidating (8.625" width and 60mm wheels).
I've recently been trying hard to improve my skills and repertoire but I fractured my ankle 😁 (riding up a pretty smooth curb with poor posture! I didn't even fall off the board, the pain hit while I was standing on it... If you or anyone else also has advice on how to prevent that or why it happened, it would mean a lot. My friend just said it's a lack of balance and that I put all my weight on the back foot with no follow through. I kind of understand but I'm not sure how exactly I could prevent that going forward. Is it just a matter of bending my knees? I think I might have unknowingly been standing like I would be for a manual which I was practicing a lot in the 2 days prior to my injury)
Anyways, since I'm still a novice skater I thought it would be sweet if I could work on both street and FREESTYLE stuff, with the goal of being able to combine the two. I'm also intrigued by freestyle skating because I don't think I've ever really seen it in my area. I want to incorporate that style into my street and vert skating. Any advice on putting it together so it can do most of the things I described? If not, it's all good. Your advice on optimizing it for bowls vs ramps is super appreciated and I'll go off of your setups when I'm ready to put it together for a day of serious bowl or vert skating bro! You're the man for this video dude, I truly cannot thank you enough and I'll be sure to binge your 60 day challenge and other videos as I rest and recover! You're an inspiration 🔥

Not sure on the ankle, sounds like a strange one for sure, I’ve rolled both mine a couple of times and it’s my least favourite injury as it stops you skating, for knees I just tape them up and carry on.
Not sure on the pure freestyle setup, but Andy uses the 9inch Heron with 8.75 mini logo trucks and 54mm 99a wheels for his freestyle work??
A Rodney Mullen style setup would be a much narrower board and trucks?
