    the match that made me think Monfils might amount to something (as in one of the all time greats)
    given his physical abilities and excellent junior grand slam record (won 3, second only to Edberg... even the likes of Federer, Roddick, Murray only won 1 each)
    but he's just too passive and too laid back to achieve more... even as a top 10 player, his record is not particularly memorable
    people talk about wasted talents like Nalbandian, Gasquet, Dimitrov... but I think Monfils is the biggest of them all

    • @lukashelmhart5289
      @lukashelmhart5289 Před 3 lety +5

      Federer really had so many chances in this match. Already the 1st set tiebreak he was many times just one easy shot away from a minibreak or to save the last setpoint...
      Federer won many close matches throughout his career but he also lost relatively lots of tight matches, especially important ones. And at the moment they stick with us more than the close matches he won...

    They both seem to be really uneasy, You could cut the heaviness in the air with a knife. Why? My guess is that it is really awkward for the players because the French crowd is obliged to root for one of theiir own, especially thei well-loved Monfils. On the other hand, they have an opportunity to see the great Federer and they want to see him at his best, not being beat down by Monfils. . I'm curious to see if they find a groove that works for the players and the French crowd-.....No, it ws awkward to the end and neitther played anywhere close to their best. Ce la vie.
