- The Rise of the Tomb Kings for Total War: WARHAMMER 2 is one of the more unique races added to the Total War: WARHAMMER trilogy so far. Whether you’re a franchise veteran or this is your first Total War, it’s campaign will make you rethink how you approach the very fundamentals of the series.

Can’t believe I never saw this channel until now. Great review!
Your perspective as a former CA employee really gives you an edge over other reviewers. Your style and videos are commendable. Subbed.
The snowball effect from is a problem in almost every strategy game, whether it's Civilization or Endless Space/Legend or Heroes of Might and Magic or Stellaris, etc.
Yep it's just really amplified here. It's stronger here than any other WH race I've played.
I think EU4 got it right. If you are very big there, you get to the late game and compete with other superpowers of that time period. Smaller countries seek alliances with your rival empires so almost every war is challenging and the game is interesting to the very end.
these games are called "Total War". While they often use historical themes, they pander to the conqueror-minded players and encourage you to become a superpower by the end-game.
If a certain TW release puts more emphasis on alliances\vassalage and ruling families intrigue (Shugon 2 comes to mind) there will be fewer end-game superpowers, but still very few surviving free small states.
Its not a inbalance issue in endless space 2, if you grow too large, you suffer from large empire penalties which means rebelions are faster to occur because of increased unrest due to too much territory
What if they added a coalition effect into total war, it would be a good step. I play europa and thats a BIG step on stopping me from snowballing everygame.
I must say yet again that your reviews are just the best because you talk about the core machanics and additional things and dont waste your time on being showman in your videos :)
Indepth and balanced review. I'm always happy when I see one of your videos in my subscription box
Just some quick points, and I could be wrong because I havn't played Tomb Kings yet.
1. I don't think the constructs heal by the tiered healing stuff, only the regular units do.
2. Lore of nekahara have a global heal to non-construct units that triggers everytime you cast a spell. That, combined with the powerful ward save spell, makes it so you can play quite defensively.
I agree with you by in large (I have been playing tomb kings) but I feel the need to point out that the spell you were referring to was just physical damage not ward-save (although one is almost as good as the other due to how rare things like magic damage are). I can't actually remember if the tiered healing helps constructs, something i'll have to check out next time I jump into my campaign as Khatep (he has a heirotitan from the start).
Been playing Tomb Kings on Legendary, and I am getting owned. I'm not the best player by any means, but I think are pretty difficult to start with, if you end up in much war.
I lost my first 4 games, finally made it to mid game, hoping to not get obliterated.
They are pretty cool, though. I like how CA can finally take risks with factions, versus how "safe" the factions of the first game were.
Great video as always.
Great video man! Sorry I'm a bit late but this is very well made.
Pretty good review, feels like such an oversight to not be able to lose or regain a book. Found out on Reddit that if one of the rogue armies dies before you have a chance to hit them, then you lose the chance to get their book. I know you only need to collect 5 but it is possible to not be able to collect enough books.
That’s a bug, it’s not supposed to be able to go to war with anyone else apparently. It’s also a bug that I was able to auto resolve a battle with it, youre supposed to have to fight them out too... lotta bugs man :/
Oh wow, I didn't know that was a bug. Damn. I understand Creative Assembly's bug patching process in that it makes it easier for them logistically to release bug fixes en-mass alongside content releases, but it only works nicely for the consumer if the content releases come out regularly. With the only next known content release to be May for the Norscan update, really makes it frustrating if you keep facing CTDs as you plainly did in the clips in the video, with no fix coming soon.
Yeah I've heard they're working on a "hotfix" for immediate TK issues, though don't know if it'll end up getting lumped in with the next content update like you say... we'll have to see!
Nice review!
Do you think that there is a market for further race packs like Araby and Dogs of War? Or do you think that this was the last and CA will be more focused on smaller DLC like Lord packs and use their resources for Thrones of Britannia and Three Kingdoms?
There is a healing spell though, map wide, for every spell you cast. Not a great heal but it's something atleast.
Yeah I mention that in the Battle Mechanics section! I really like the tiered health system.
No no, I meant the lore of Nehekhara, the first you can pick is regeneration that triggers every time you cast a spell with that priest. Pretty nifty.
Oh yeah! I think a few melee lords have that skill too!
Sort of. The highest tier red skill for melee lords give +Ld and healing in an aura. The regeneration Patrik is talking about isLore Attribute: The Restless Dead. Basically, the Lore of Nehehkara mostly exists to spam cheap spells to continually heal your undead units (same in the Tabletop game), not to mention to give them added killing power/survivability as needed.
Won the Camapain on very hard in 160Rounds with a cheese strat. -> research every Dynastie to 1 round left, then all at once. way to ez
Geat review. Keep up the good work👍
Amazing review, thank you!
Nice review! The scorpion bug was annoying for me as well - made me swap them out for great bows.
The end battle was cool to watch but story-wise I was expecting a cliff-hanger or something unexpected - almost as if they invested everything in gameplay and 0 in story =\
Regarding the bugs you were/are having - was it just crashes or did you have graphical glitches as well? Checked my gpu/cpu temps and no issues...
I had crashes on camapign and in battle, and shadow + ssao bugs which are visible in the video at 18:30. My fps in the games has dropped as well, i used to stream the game with no issues but now it stutters and lags a lot
How exactly do the mechanics transfer to Mortal Empires... does the Black pyramid give a similar reward after you consolidated and mustered several armies to crack the garrison or is it just another settlement...
The books are entirely optional in Mortal Empires and as far as I'm aware the Black Pyramid quest doesn't happen and is just a regular city. Could be mistaken.
RepublicOfPlay yes, books only offer rewards such as ‘bonus to trade income’ and so on. Miscellaneous bonuses that aren’t exactly required. Some can be quite the travel, so I’d suggest looking at the reward and asking whether sending an army or two so far to gather it instead of fighting for new territories.
Just to clear up what he said. Any dlc in either warhammer game will show up in game whether you buy the dlc or not. If you buy the dlc you are unlocking the ability to play them, very pro consumer dlc plan from CA.
It's weird how you had so many technical issues I didn't run into a single issue throughout my playthrough.
Wish I'd seen this before I bought it. Really good review.
The way the Tomb Kings get more unstoppable over time is perfect (look at the Necrons from Dark Crusade). There is absolutely no problem with this mechanic, that is literally how the Tomb Kings are supposed to be, and that's why it's so thrilling to play as or against them
Its a little one dimensional for Total War gameplay. Lore friendly stuff is great, but its supposed to be a more sandbox experience with more avenues of gameplay. Rome isnt supposed to always conquer europe, thats what makes the TW games fun.
Got it already but didn't play that much but so far thought it was pretty good.
If playing as Settra or Arkhan, yeah, you will probably never need to leave the Southlands, even more so with Arkhan because he starts with one of the books. But play as Khalida or Khatep and you have to fight your way through Lustria or Naggaroth respectively, cross the sea, and then beat back the other Tomb Kings to gain ownership of the Black Pyramid. Much more interesting, much more challenging campaigns.
Great review thank you Darren
Great review. I think it'd be a good idea to slow down the late game of the tomb kings.
Did not share your bugs and crashes. Great review either way!
Are you sure that TK cannot get any post-battle loot at all? I think there was a lot less but I´d still get stuff now and then.
If the enemy lord had equipment you can get stuff from them or from treasure hunts!
Got it on sale for 7€.
Its awesome but very op in campaign.
Good buy, got it for full price, still very worth it imo.
Amazing video. Buying this Dlc now
Great vid. Thank you, this helped me with my decision to buy this dlc.
Great review!
I've put about 35 hours in to the Tomb Kings DLC by now and i have not had a single crash. Are you sure it isn't some kind of a mod compatibility issue?
Yep, many other comments on this vid have said they get the crashes and many say they dont.
actually this looks prety good!
So ive been thinking about buying this DLC but from this old review does anyone know if these crashing and bug issues are fixed ?
I don't know for sure, but i never had any crashes while playing them
im torn between vampirates or bone heads...not sure yet, its £15 which aint cheap, think im heading towards vampirates
Personally prefer tomb kings because of its crafting system! But its mostly what art you enjoy more as both are really good
@@RepublicOfPlay im torn mate, i get money this thursday and its between bones or vamps, im 60-40 for the vamps but your vieo was really good and turned me more to the boneheads, i might flip a coin or something
Wasn't the skaven dude part of the dlc? Or was that a free patch I forget
anids1988 trench was free
Very good video, I would have given even a higher score (imho the best DLC CA have done ) but still the video was well done and many points u made was spot on. I enjoy Tomb Kings more in Mortal Empires campaign as u have to reach further and the early struggle is even greater imo. Iam sry u had bugs and crashes cause I havent had a single thing like that happen to me as of yet. And to add my fps is still same as before, Mortal Empires have worse fps then Vortex campaign but that goes for any faction not just this DLC.
Once again Great Vid and my score is 8.5 of 10 (a really strong DLC)
ps I fear for Britannia, sad for a Attila remake 3-4y after ...looks so dull compared to Warhammer
I agree, from what I've seen of Thrones of Britannia, it doesn't look particularly interesting right now.
plis am i the only one ? , when i fight tomb kings in BIG battles i have lie 14-15 fps , but with other factions its like stable 30...they need to fix this shit NOW
New race + new wining type + new campaign + 4 legendary Lord's ya I say it worth it so meany new things
Awesome review. I thinki i goona buy it
Please say how you make these thumbnails
Photoshop, take a screenshot, cut around it... edit it a bit and there you go.
Damn 20 dollars for just one faction
Well done, dynamic books would definitely be better for victory condition. Item crafting should be available to every faction and there should be item market. Vortex campaign in WH2 had HUGE potential to be best multiplayer campaign experience but CA missed this golden opportunity with bad implementation of Vortex mechanics, so more multiplayer limitations with this DLC are BIG -. With new bugs and that price in mind it is solid DLC.
Have you done one for pirate coast
Yes, check my reviews playlist on my youtube channel page, or search vampire coast republicofplay
@@RepublicOfPlay I checked after this video, recently got both games, completed the story with the Elves on WH1, I decided to buy both these DLCs due to your reviews really got alot of depth in them which was great. Do you think we will see a total war Warhammer 3 this year
No not until mid 2020
@@RepublicOfPlay I hope they follow the same dlc system they have done so far

I've only finished Settra's campaign, but I thought the cut scenes when you obtained each book were really bland. Same shot of skeletons reading a book with a symbol in it, cut to pyramid showing a square light up x5. I mean the art is really good, but watching the same thing each time felt a bit disappointing. Didn't give much of a feel of progression or achievement.
Yeah, but that was the same in the vortex basically, each ritual completed was the same video with a different thing lighting up. I also wish there was more/better cutscenes, but i liked the opening and endings
That's true. I thought the Dark Elves ones had a bit of a story going at least. I was really hoping for a different cut scene for each book, to add some replayability value to the campaign & add some incentive for collecting different books. The intro & ending scenes were pretty good!
Good review but u forgot to mention the buggy SSAO and broken shadows which take away a lot of fun from watching close ups.
He did at around 20:00
He did though?
What's the outro music?

I like the mortuary cult mechanic. I like the quests and appearance of the TK. But the gameplay is absolute shit in my opinion. Your regular skeletons are about as bad as zombies I would say, only you are forced by the game to use them extensively even in the late game. I usually only build 1 of the military mechanics per province but with the TK it felt like I had to build multiple per province, since the caps are so fucking harsh you can spent 4k on a new building and only get *one* new unit *globally*. I really think they should double the caps on everything or at least make them a cap per army.
And perhaps the most annoying part is how your rebels will assault your fully fortified cities and win because they do not have this cap at all. So you'll get a rebel force with 6 tomb guards, several ushabti and multiple sepulcral stalkers to top it off. Something you could never do (without that one book of Nagash).
The lore of Nehekhara is practically useless. There's like 2 decent spells in that thing, whereas there are at least 3 in lore of death and light. Your necrotact in battle also feels useless since you need to get him lvl10+ before he can start providing additional unit caps on constructs and in terms of healing he only gets *two* charges that only target a single unit each. Despite his anti infantry bonuses he is too much of a glass cannon in my experience to really let loose on a mob of enemies which is why I think they are pretty useless. I would much rather have another tomb prince or even just another regular unit in his place.
Then there is the problem about fighting late game armies, again unless you have the entirety of tomb king lands & the money to build enough military structures, is that you can not make counter-armies. You are forced by the game to stick to a basic setup of 4 archers, a couple of cavalry and a couple of constructs, a couple of t2 and t3 infantry whilst the rest will have to exist out of your shit tier t1 infantry. Or you can make 1 super good army with 6 constructs and only t3 infantry but then no other army will have any good units beyond maybe archers which only hurts you more in the large scale of things.
I had a rogue army spawn at my cities whilst I was fighting/whiping out humans at Araby as Arkhan and said humans then made them declare war on me and they had 2 chosen, 3 chaos warriors and 1 chaos warrior gw, hell cannon and like 4 marauders. My garrisons would get fucked (I hadn't had the money/growth yet to get walls in the minor cities) completely and when I sprinted Arkhan's army back to fight them I still got my ass kicked in the end because all I had *one* unit of AP (scorpion) and I couldn't touch their chaos warriors/chosen. The latter halberd version eventually killed my scorp and even the regular marauders killed my infantry at a 2:1 ratio so even though they were outnumbered I couldn't win because of the shitty design of the TK.
Though this could have been just alot of bad luck had this happened to me as say the VC I could at least use skeletons (combined with carts are about as good as marauders I believe) as my main line and I would have vargheists, a varghulf or even just recruited crypt horrors to deal with all of their high armor units.

Something must be with your computer. Never have freeze
Nope, just this game and never had issues before the update.
Im just a little pissed of by the pricing, i feel that we have to pay more and more...
Wood Elves cost exactly the same, and thats game 1 , they are not the most expensive DLC
Wood Elves came with their own mini-campaign... This pack has 2 extra lords to compensate but the diversity in this pack hardly makes up for it in my opinion, and if the rebuttal is "well what about mortal empires?" then you have to factor in the other £39.99 that costs too.
Well people moaned all around twitter how they dont want mini campaigns and how they want more stuff for the main campaign, and thats exactly what CA delivered. To adresss mortal empires: They said int he beggining that this game is a 3 game franchise that they will build over time, so if you want to play the full package you gota pay for the full package simple as that, people who buy WH 2 wont get WH 1 content just because hey, i bought the second game give me the first one. And now there is reddit moaning storm about how older factions are much much much more bland to the new ones, well this is whats gona happen , im 99% possitive on that : They cant diverse another budget to old races renewal, for now they are using budget for developing game 3 and DLC for game 2 , after game 3 with all DLC is done, and their budget wont have anywhere to go, they will most likely revisit the races from the oldest to newest, they said that this will be ongoing project for years ahead. So got bad news, it will cost more, but the final product after all the games and DLCs and patches, sooooo worth it. Cant wait for 300+ hour long campaigns across Game 1 - 3 + DLC + FLC.
Nicolas Höll hope they add as far as cathay
Well people moaned about mini campaigns because they weren't that good and the price was very high. The idea being that if you cut the campaign and just give the race, it might be half the price. Instead CA have managed to keep the price the same and offer what is basically the race without the mini-campaign with a couple extra lords. To me, a race like the Wood Elves, Bretonnia or Norsca, have as interesting/deep mechanics as Tomb Kings on the campaign. While I think the Beastmen mini-campaign wasn't very good, I think Hannibal At The Gates or Charlemagne were excellent DLC campaigns, so it's sad we're not going to get them again.
Worth it? Yes with an if, no with a but.
the thing which really disappointed me was, that settlements still not change their skin- only these ugly flags.
i created a thread in the official forums and i hope CA will notice it. sadly, a lot of people spread false info (for example, they claim there is a mod for this, but there isn't because its not moddable and cultural settlement skins is .. just.. meh, because its hard coded)
but also a looot of people support this and one modder discovered interesting stuff via datamining.
if somebody want to support me and the other people, feel free to check out this thread
forums.totalwar.com/discussion/209677/settlements-should-change-their-skins-im-sick-of-these-flags-lol/p1
i hope this will change something, or at least make CA reply. its just a massive downgrade from wh1, and even a bigger downgrade from ATW and R2. and is one of the two things i hate in this game (the other are bugs, surprise, lol)
Yeah I'm with you man that the fact that there isn't a Rome 2/Attila like system where the province eventually converts to your culture when you upgrade it. Looks downright goofy that after 200 turns, Dwarfs for example would still be okay with Orc-ridden graffiti all over their precious hold. The fact that it's hard coded is frustrating because we as consumers don't get the option to mod in a different option ourselves.
Our only hope is the Norsca release, as one of their core mechanics was razing settlements to a monument to a particular Chaos god.
It's trash dlc. Sorry. CA greedy af.
Could CA devise a less interesting win condition for this race pack? Lawd
Could you do something else than complain about every single thing CA does? Lawd
No, because CA have done more bad than good since Shogun 2.
Snarfindorf purely subjective, but whatever. People like you can't be reasoned with.
Do you wanna compare review scores and modability between their best games compared to every game after Shogun 2?
Snarfindorf why should we? What point you wanna prove with that? If anything, it's just you unwilling to take off your nostalgia glasses.
This republic guy always critical of CA... its understandable, after years on CA's shackle who can blame him...
Equally critical of all games/DLC. Just check my other vids!
