  • Welcome back to the channel! In this video Sean goes over why the radiator fan won't turn off on your 2014 - 2019 Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra.
    Thermostat: amzn.to/333Vrzl - Temperature Sensor: amzn.to/3q915bY
(GM Thermostat Part Number: 12674639) (GM Coolant Temp Sensor Part Number: 12608814)
Sean informs you that the coolant temperature sensor on your truck may have gone bad, and will need to be replaced before your radiator fan begins to operate like normal again. (GM Coolant Temp Sensor Part Number: 12608814)
Linked below are two comparable sensors to pick from, and everything you will need to get this job done. (FYI, “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.”)
1.) ACDelco, 213-4514 Professional Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor:
    amzn.to/2PAmWd7
2.) Delphi, TS10076 Coolant Temperature Sensor:
    amzn.to/3gOMKNL
If this doesn't fix the problem, most likely your thermostat has also gone bad. Shortly after replacing the coolant temperature sensor on our truck, the problem came back, and we decided to replace the thermostat. Once replacing the thermostat, we have had no issues. Linked below is the three-video playlist that shows how the thermostat is replaced and how to trouble shoot any common issues:
NEW VIDEO: • Radiator Fan Won't Tur...
PLAYLIST: • Radiator Fan Won't Tur...
🚨 Note 🚨 - If you have replaced both the sensor and the thermostat and your truck continues to have this issue follow the steps below: 👇
    1. Remove the teflon tape used on the sensor. This can sometimes cause the sensor to read improperly, so it's better to not use it.
    2. Disconnect your battery for ten minutes. This will reset your trucks computer and let it read your new components correctly.
Remember, this is at your own risk. These steps have helped fix multiple trucks but is not guaranteed to fix all every truck. We recommend having your truck diagnosed by a professional.

This happened to me over the weekend, I decided to replace both the sensor and thermostat. In my situation, I lost about a half gallon of antifreeze. Total cost at Auto Zone for the sensor, thermostat and a gallon of antifreeze was $110. Tools/Supplies were Channel Locks for the hose clamps, 19mm deep socket for the Sensor, 10mm socket for the thermostat and negative battery terminal, old towel to absorb antifreeze spillage, and funnel for reservoir to add new antifreeze. The sensor came with an adequate amount of Teflon Tape, so I didn't add more. After laying out the needed tools, it took less than 30 minutes to complete the job. This task is easier than an oil change.

The video did help a lot. So thank you! The only thing I would add is that on a 2016 Chevy Tahoe, the ECT Sensor is in a very tight place next to the thermostat. It is very difficult to get the harness cap off the sensor. Because the area was small to work in it wasn't easy to remove the harness. There is a light colored plastic clip that needs to be removed first so you can pinch the small black release tab so the harness cap separates from the sensor. Otherwise, in a tight area not knowing this you could damage the harness cap that snaps on to the sensor. I didn't know what to expect and was concerned to break the plastic. Had a mechanic friend help after many tries and then it was easy. But not knowing this made it difficult.

This is such a great video. I used it and your other one to replace the thermostat, and the temp sensor in my 2015 silverado when the fan wouldn't turn off, and the gauge wound get over 160. Great video. It helped yesterday on my '14 GMC. The comment about removing the big wide intake helped, just two hose clamp fittings and two EGR clamps. A couple other symptoms were a check engine light coming on (don't know code, don't have a scanner), and my air conditioning only blew warm air when the coolant temp was 160. Seems good now. By the way, if you carefully remove the coolant fill cap on the left side of compartment, it'll depressurize it and hardly any coolant will come out when you pull the sensor out.

Funny thing is, disconnecting the battery terminal for a few seconds stops the fan issue for me anywhere from a day to MONTHS. I'm obviously resetting something more than the gauges. Still, it comes back eventually. I can't help thinking it's not a sensor or thermostat "sticking" as that is mechanical, not electrical.

    • @TheBrothersWorkshop
      @TheBrothersWorkshop  Před 2 lety +3

Hey Gail! We're glad you found the video helpful. Typically we found that if the fan is still running when the vehicle is off, turning the truck on and off again will stop the fan. Also, if the issue starts again, you will need to disconnect the battery to reset the trucks computer. The truck will then read all of the new components correctly. It doesn't happen all of the time, but sometimes it's necessary. Also, teflon tape can sometimes make the sensor miss-read. Removing that can also help fix any further issues. Have a great day and thanks for watching! 🙂

Sometimes after swapping the faulty temperature sending unit, the fans may continue to run full blast for a few driving cycles if it threw a code. To speed that along so you don't have to wait the few driving cycles for the code to clear, unhook the negative cable from the battery for 10 minutes to reset the PCM while you're swapping out the sensor. It will clear the code and will run normally the next time you start it, instead of two or three times later.

I had the same problem, quick search brought me to your video, and I was able to get this problem fixed for under $20 in no time at all. Thanks! On another note - when the sensor stopped working, it threw a code and my check engine light came on. As a fail safe, I presume, it shut down my A/C. I was worried this was unrelated and I had two problems. Once I replaced the sensor, my check engine light was still on, and my A/C was still not working. I went to O'Reilly to get them to reset the codes, and they told me they won't do that anymore. Not sure if that was true or if they just didn't want to do it. Anyway, so I disconnected the battery for a few minutes, and after that the codes were cleared and my A/C was working again right away. So, maybe that experience will help someone else along the way. Thanks for the good video Amigo!
