    Hey Chuck, even with a letter guide the casting is not great on most sets! Found a fantastic idea. Tape down your work, then get a thin credit card. After lightly marking your work, you can place the letter and get the credit card slid under the casting up to the bottom of the letter cast! No error. Next letter, position it and remove the letter you just stamped. The credit card is thin enough that you can easily line them up without the casting imperfections messing up the alignment. I just threw away my work because I looked like a drunken sailor.. even with the tool that secured my letters!

    Another great video. I wish this video had been out there when I first started using stamps. Helps to dampen the leather first to get a nice clean stamp. In sanding the edges it is important to make sure the edges are straight with each other, otherwise sanding will make it worse. I don’t know how to do this except by constantly checking with a small square between putting the edges on a belt sander.

    Do you have a stamping set for softer, thinner leather? Maybe it’s a completely different approach

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  Před 4 lety

      Hi there,
      If the leather is chrome tanned, it won't take stamping very well. You can usually get a logo stamp impressed using a press but for alphabet stamping it won't have the kind of impression a veg tan leather does. Hope that helps!

  • @user-ty8tm1py1h

    Hi, can the stamp be used on non vegetative leather?

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  Před 6 lety +3

      Hi there,
      Thank you for your question. We would not recommend using stamps on non-veg tan leather as it will not hold the stamp imprint.

    Please comment on how to get proper spacing with the "I" stamp

    • @MountainFisher
      @MountainFisher Před 6 lety

      A good "I" stamp is narrower than the other stamps. Don't buy cheap stamps.

    • @Jeweled_and_tooled_customs
      @Jeweled_and_tooled_customs Před 6 lety

      To get it look right you’ll need to overlay the square Piece to get the I in correct position

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  Před 6 lety

      Most sets have an “I” with a smaller base so it spaces correctly but, some cheaper sets do not. It will take some testing, but I would drop the outside left edge of the stamp head 1/8”, 3/16” or ¼” away from the edge of the previous letter itself. This will give you an idea of how much overlap the “I” will need for that specific set if it has a full sized base. Hope this helps!

    I tried, but mine doesn't do that...
    I thought my leather was too thick...
    What block are you using to hammer on?

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  Před 3 měsíci +1

      The surface under the leather is a marble slab: www.weaverleathersupply.com/products/marble-tooling-slab?variant=40909281984652
      You'll want to make sure you have a nice, solid surface that won't have any bounce back when you hit the stamp. Another thing to make sure is that the leather is cased or wetted properly to get a nice, deep impression.

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  Před 3 lety

      Hi Aiasha,
      We haven't tried it on fake leather but normally for stamps to give a nice, clean impression it would have to be a vegetable tanned leather.

  • @jeniferfennellphotography

    What material are you working on? The square piece your working on. Not the leather.

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Jennifer,
      That is a marble slab, it gives you a nice solid surface for stamping which will give you a nice clean impression in the leather. We'll link them here for you: www.weaverleathersupply.com/catalog/item-detail/65800-24-12/marble-tooling-slab-12-x-12/pr_62664

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply

      We wouldn't recommend it - we would suggest buying stamps that are specifically made for metal.

    Do you have to wet leather before stamping??
    I dont like using any type of chemicals.on my leather

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  Před 5 lety +3

      Hi Ana,
      Yes, just wet it with water, otherwise, the stamp imprint will not be crisp and clean. No chemicals needed.
