5 famous arias and overtures you think you know- but do you?

  • Let me suggest a little game today. I will play for you 5 short and extremely famous examples of an opera or an overture. And if you know it, and can name it, you can have for each correct answer a piece of candy or chocolate or whatever you prefer. But no cheating, okay?
And for each wrong answer you have to do a good deed, like helping an old lady across the street. Actually, I hope you will not know any of the right answers because there are a lot of old people who need our help crossing the street.
5 very, very, very famous melodies. The twist: each time I will play the not so famous part of this aria or opera or overture first. And you will get 10 seconds to guess . And after those 10 seconds I will play the famous bit and you will say: Why didn’t I know, I am such an idiot, let me find an old lady and help her crossing the street right now!
This is a brutal game to divide the strong from the weak, just like the Hunger Game, only much, much harder!

5/5 :) Excellent quiz and wonderfully engaging host! I look forward to many more, perhaps more niche, such as bel canto, the works of Richard Strauss etc.

    1. Bella figlia dell'amore (VERDI, Lakmé)

  • @jorgaba2865

Love it! I got 3/5. I missed Lakme & La Wally, sadly. Of course familiar, but I could not place them.

  • @williamnethercott4364

4/5. At least that's better than I did with the second quiz. La Wally had me completely lost.

  • @wookinooki9023

i got them all right except Zauber, but I got Mozart. I understood the words fire and wind. darn.

I will recognize Rigoletto if you wake me up in the middle of the night. It was the first opera I saw as a child of 6 at Lvov Opera Theater. For months I was humming La Donna e Mobile. OK, I was a weird kid, when my peers sand rock, I hummed Rigoletto and danced Gold and Silver waltz around the kitchen table (that was the only record we had) I knew William Tell from the first note. I didn't get La Wally, Lakme was no brainer.

    So much fun!!!

4 out of five. Although, that cello of the Guillaume Tell Ouverture should be iconic, too 🙂. Can one order tea bags used by you? 😀

Have you ever seen the opera "The Teabag"?

  • @danielklempner4786

2 out of 5. I knew lakme and magic flute. I was so surprised so many people didnt know lakme. It was so easy, since it was even from the same aria thats famous! those also happen to be the two operas from this that ive seen. but i think lakme could have been harder.

3 out of 5, so I'll have a lot to do in the coming days... Lakme and Guillaume Tell, arghhhh.... I've loved La Wally since the movie "Diva" by Jean-Jacques Beineix and the beginning of the aria is absolutely magical. Thanks for this quiz. Can I order the tea bags through you? The site seems to have a bug 😏

3 out of five. La Wally is still on my to do list. I have listened to the Aria you played though. Just not really in Depth. I don‘t really have an excuse for not recognizing the Magic Flute and Lakmé was pretty much a Lucky hit for me as I‘ve only listened to this one piece. So if you‘d taken it one step further and picked a different piece I would have been lost.

I only have one complaint: A good deed should not be a punishment. :)

  • @vinoveritas4921

Very interesting exercice, I am asking for more ! I only got 2.5/5 : Zauberflote (not easy), La Wally (easier) and I made a confusion between Rigoleto/Trovatore (and I first thought it was Traviata ...😅, but at least all this stuff is Verdi from the same period so this is why I claim a half point 😄). But I completely missed Lakmé (was not sure, I never really listened with a great attention to this opera and was hesitating with some Massenet stuff, don't know why) and Guillaume Tell. But I promise I will help some old lady to cross the road.

Welcome! It's a wonderful, didactic and educative quiz. Thank you. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • @sylviebasyl2835

    Rigoletto bella figlia dell amore

  • @edgarfranceschi8338

You're a riot! Is that really a picture of Maria Callas (crossed with Audrey Hepburn, maybe)?

  • @ian.marais1202

    Fantastic I got all right.
