My word Keown is full of nonsense. No Chelsea fan thought we were going for the title this season. We would’ve been happy with top 4. We got Europe which is acceptable under the circumstances. Yes we spent a lot but with new owners, a whole bunch of players going and new ones coming in then by all metrics this young team has done ok. Had we finished 10th it would’ve been a lot harder to accept. Somewhere along the line a lot of people, including these pundits, appear to have forgotten Chelsea finished 12th last season with only 44 points. Chelsea not only finished with 63 points, a 19 point improvement over last season but also finished 6th and are literally the youngest side in the entire EPL. Finally, these pundits mocked Poch for previously bringing up the fact Chelsea are actually 4th in xG this season. The reality is points won and only points won matter at the end of the day. But Chelsea have literally won the 4th most points in the league since the start of January. What has happened is Chelsea’s young talented side is not only coming together but they are actually finishing their chances. Because Chelsea have actually dominated and outshot the vast majority of their opponents, even in matches they drew and lost. They have actually been playing to their exact xG for the second half of the season. Poch should definitely stay and anybody who objectively watches Chelsea know they have a ton of talent and have massively improved this season.

All footballing loyalties aside, objectively speaking, Keown who rarely gets it right, I think had valid points. Chelsea were a top team and the owners unnecessarily dismantled it. I think this is just undeniable. Simon couldn't deny it. They disassembled it because of their vision of having a young crop of players on long contracts to maximize the capital of their assets, slow the acceleration of the asset depreciation and ostensibly to win a league.
The billion spent easily could have, should have, been used better, no question, with far better results than what's been seen.
The process Simon is talking about to trust, was a self imposed process. They were already a top club.
Hopefully the recruitment gets it right and the positive results Chelsea has experienced recently continue into next season. It's a big job for their Directors this summer as they're losing 3 significant pieces largely responsible for their recent uptick in results, that being Gallagher, Chalobah and Thiago Silva.

Keown speaking with understanding context. Chelsea have had the most injuries in the league and had their first choice centreback pairing (Chalobah and Thiago Silva on the bench. Gusto was injured so Gilchrist an inexperienced centre back by trade played on the right. It was a patchwork defence and a team missing its best player that day. Theres no way a close to full strength Chelsea team would've lost scandalously.

No one is questioning Guardiola's process as a manager, his trophy cabinet is testament to that, however he has never faced a scenario where he has to settle for a second choice in my opinion, City is basically a lab experiment of how an ideal club would operate, zero financial risk, and a perfect operational and executive teams.

Do not watch football anymore, but one would assume thiago silver is going to be hard for chelsea to replace. Class player
Chelsea will never move into the bracket of a top team, roman had them for years, won everything, and they still could not get to a point where they get that place among the best teams.
Chelsea today are in no better position then before i stopped watching epl, and i stopped in 2002.
How did chelsea do with that time at the top, in terms of roman making them a top team, they never achieved it, despite winning everything with roman as an owner.
Personally i think chelsea have not moved into the top teams league, and are still at the level before moruinho
Some teams come and go, they have a brief time at top, and cannot estabilish themselves as a top team, so when that period of winning ends, they go back to what they were before.
When you see liverpool, could be rubbish, and they would still keep there world wide fans.
Roman brought success to chelsea, but did not make them into a tier 1 team, proving how hard that is, as chelsea won everything in those years.

Nobody in his right mind would expect Chelsea to be challenging for the title at this point with 80% of the players being new to the club and partly the league, not forgetting to mention that injuries played a big part this season as well......14 players at one stage. Take Saliba, Saka, Rice, White, Havertz or Odegard out their team most of the season and see where they would have finished.

This is a fun fact. The Chelsea line-up that won the 20/21 Champions League cost £57m less than the regular first choice Arsenal team that season. Remember where Arsenal were not that long ago. Finishing 8th despite spending big on Pepe, Lacazette, Partey,, Aubameyang and others. When you bring in a load of teenagers and under 22's, then you are obviously looking to success in the years ahead, not necessarily the here and now. Chelsea's team is the youngest in the PL. Talented but prone to naivety and poor decision making which can only be improved through experience. They finished just five points off a Champions League place. If they maintain the improvement they have shown, they will be challenging for the top honours before long.
