It’s been a while since I got a new scorpion. Well, I did get my Forest Scorpion, but this video was actually filmed a few weeks before I got the Forest Scorpion ~ I just procrastinated to edit this video. Anyway! This scorpion is a female Androctonus australis hector, the Yellow Fat Tail Scorpion. They are indigenous to Africa.
Unfortunately, this individual looks to be rather lethargic when I unboxed her. I’m not too sure why, or what was the cause, as I have no clue what she had gone through during the shipping period. It also could be that she’s an old specimen ~ From what I’ve read on a forum, they live to about 5 years (correct me if I’m wrong). Regardless, let’s all hope for the best and that she pulls through whatever she’s going through.

Yo straight up having a few scorpions in my time. I will tell you yes the stinger was clipped. Which is seriously messed up to do to any animal. An 2- seeing that injury on the top side of the stinger brotha I hate to say it. But to be 100% honest with you. I'll be seriously surprised if she lives. But none the less I truly hope she makes it 🙏. Also if I were you I'd seriously speak with the person whom sent you such a sick stringer clipped scorpion. I personally wouldn't be a happy camper. An probably either want a full refund back. Or bluntly curse the bastard out!

IIRC they refuse to eat something that's still alive, so if they can't kill something with their claws then they don't eat, and they starve.
is it possible she will regrow her clipped stinger back after she moults? like the tarantulas are able to regrow their legs in time?
Dont scorpions defecate from the last segment of the stinger as well? That may mean that all that gunk is built up poo from an injury and is also not good at all
I strongly feel her calm behavior and no will to eat must be caused by how she been treated, her sting was clipped this is first thing and second, she might be sick or something more (might be a stress or physical injury during the transport). And to people saying she could sting him... how could she if her sting was clipped... i dont think it could penetrate the skin so the glorious hand was safe. Anyway, wishing her the best hopefully she regenerates and regrows her sting after next molt.Oh and happy new year to you all guys!

@JPs Pet nation maybe the owner didnt want to get stung, or wanted to make this scorpion possible to handle........ i dont see other reasons to do such cruel thing to an animal. I would smack that owner really hard for what he have done.

@@OgLyftz Not only does it hurt the poor thing, the way fat tails have evolved to prioritize their stinger as their main weapon, she won't be able to kill a lot of prey and could very well starve.
It'd be like if someone cut your fingers down to little stubs. Yeah, you still have hands, and _technically_ still have fingers, but it hurts like a mother and you can't do anything with em.

@@astartesfanboy5294 I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure they don't grow back. And their anuses are connected to their tails right? So I assume when the scorpion damages his tail he also damages his anus which could cause poop and excrete to build up and swell.

I think her stinger was indeed clipped.. that's practically a death sentence. A friend of mine had a scorpion like that.. it only lasted about 3 or 4 months before it starved to death due to the clipped stinger. Plus, the damage to her tail? I think that may be from a failed breeding attempt?? Or she wasn't well taken care of.. I'm not quite sure, but my friend says that you should keep a good watch on her.

@@CynicalCharmer I know this is just semantics, but "invertebrates" refers to the vast majority of the animal kingdom. In fact there are species in the same phylum as us (chordata) that are technically invertebrates. As such, the statement "invertebrates don't feel pain" is quite obviously false. Octopi, for example, are invertebrates, and widely considered to be among the most intelligent (and tactilely sensitive) creatures on our planet.
Like I said, though, that's just semantics. I'm fairly certain that what you meant was something along the lines of "arthropods don't feel pain." That's certainly a statement that's less obviously false, but I still think it's fair to say that at least some arthropods (including scorpions) can feel what we'd consider to be pain.
First, we have to decide what we mean by "pain." Is "pain" just the ability to process and react to a damaging stimulus? In that case, amoebae and most plants could arguably be capable of experiencing "pain." Or, does "pain" require a certain level of consciousness, so as to have some form of conscious emotional reaction to the painful stimulus. I think most people would agree that some degree of consciousness is necessary to truly experience "pain," but exactly how much consciousness is required, and if it's even possible to quantitatively tell if an organism possesses this level of consciousness is a question that starts to stray into the realm of philosophy, and isn't something I'm able to definitively answer.
As for the first definition of pain, there is still a degree of debate on that front. Some arthropod specimens have been observed to sustain injuries that would appear to be quite painful without significantly modifying their behavior. I specifically remember an anecdote of a caterpillar behaving normally while being eaten alive by parasites. However, in my (completely unqualified) opinion, I think it's more likely that this was due either to some aspect of caterpillar psychology or neurology than a complete inability for that species to register pain. Also, this is really a moot point when it comes to the topic of whether all arthropods are capable of reacting to painful stimuli, as plenty of arthropods (as I'm sure many of the hobbyists in this comments section will be eager to point out) have been observed modifying their behavior in response to injuries, even if that injury doesn't physically require a modification in behavior.
Now, on to the more philosophical definition of pain. It's obviously impossible to quantitatively determine whether arthropods are conscious enough to truly "feel" pain, and as I've alluded to, philosophy isn't really an area I'm particularly knowledgeable in. But, I think it's worth pointing out that there is great variety within the phylum, and some species are much more neurologically complex than others. And, among the more complex are arachnids (like the scorpion in the video).
I hope I could answer your question, and maybe even teach you something about the subject. Like I said, there is still quite a bit of debate on this topic, and it is by no means settled in one way or another. In my opinion, though, it's highly likely that at least the more complex arthropods are able to feel what we would consider pain.

The post service almost killed your scorpion I really worried I'm sure everyone is too. What i think happened is that she got injured while being thrown around in the post office they should really be ashamed. Get a refund if they got there package ruffed up and there valuable item had been damaged or killed how would they feel? They shouldn't treat there consumers that way SICKENING really 😤

If the sting is clipped, that's the seller. Lack of heat pad/insulation (idk what the weather is near him, but could be contributing to the lethargy), that's the seller. Low amount of packaging, that's the seller. It's hard to blame the post service when the seller has so many issues.
Calvin Narine if the seller bothered to pay for it to be considered live, it should be treated correctly. If they sent it through regular postal to save money, they should have packed it as best as possible. Regular postal is gonna be thrown at some point. These are someone higher than minimum wage employees with a high turnover rate. You're not gonna get the best of the best out of that.
Well, I don't think animals shouldn't be mailed in the first place. Post office workers typically have zero time to be careful when handling any form of mail. :(
Peach Plastic it all depends on the animal and the packaging. Take crickets or roaches for example. You could, technically, punt that package across a field and they'd be fine. So long as the packaging itself survives at least. The only problem there is that people know that and don't bother paying extra for insects to be considered live. They don't consider temperature. If it's not in lives, it's perfectly possible that it will be left out side in freezing temperature for hours

I cant lie mate I'm really sad that she's not very well. it doesn't look good at the moment not gonna lie. with a clipped tail like that she isn't gonna kill her meals and the top of her tail also looks very bad and maybe infected. i would get it checked by a vet. I love your channel by the way. I have arachnophobia but for some reason I LOVE tarantulas and even like scorpions a little bit. the first video I watched was the after 2 hours unboxing. but yeah... poor creature. no animal deserves such treatment. :(

Do NOT report the case to PETA. You do not want them involved. There's too high of a chance one crazy member would come along and release all of his tarantulas. There are also probably VERY few vets that can and will do anything to help, sadly. In the aracnoworld, you're more on your own when something goes wrong. The most Exotics Lair can probably do is just tell people in his local area not to buy from this person and perhaps on a forum if he is on one.
PETA is the type of organization that would take away every animal he owns and release them into the wild, possibly even in their non-native habitats, or just outright kill the poor creatures. they are NOT something you would want involved with this. if you weren't aware, they are known for taking people's dogs and cats to "rehome," and by that i mean euthanize perfectly healthy animals that do not belong to them. their adoption rates are less than 1%, IIRC.

@@teawitabiscuit8812 Yeah, PETA brands themselves as an animal rights group but are really a fringe eco-warrior group that's (especially at higher levels within the organization) practically a cult. If you aren't American (or even if you are American) it's very easy to not be aware of that. The ASPCA is probably the animal rights group in America that's more in line with what you thought PETA was, but afaik they generally deal with mammals and might not be equipped to handle cruelty to arachnids. This is obviously all kind of a moot point, since I'm pretty sure Exotics Lair isn't in America, but I thought I'd mention it.

The stinger being clipped doesn't doom the scorpion.....I've seen scorpions who've lost their telson still survive in captivity......HOWEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! you really need to reveal the source of this scorpion. Clipping the tip of the stinger is completely moronic......and no one should work with this person again, much less receive scorpions from this person again. That is just ignorance on display there.

No do NOT reveal the source. People would find them and send them death threats and harass them. Exotics Lair just needs to tell them off and get a full refund and tell people in his area to never buy from this person. The laws where he lives with animal cruelty may be different than most other places so there may be nothing legally he can do.

And you may want to look into the stinger with someone, to see if it's alright because it looks infected.

If I could, I would push so hard for worldwide availability to specialized packaging that has a universal meaning of “THERE IS A LIVE CREATURE IN HERE BE CAREFUL” ...or even just proper labeling of that package. It’s more of my fantasy since I don’t see the funds available AND there are differing laws on animals and animal cruelty across the globe it would be hard to have everyone on the same page...
SN: whether the injuries were acquired due to poor handling from the previous owner; or due to poor handling during the shipment...I still stand by that too many animals are traumatized or injured in the shipping process and it sucks because most of the animals I am into raising are ALL acquired through live shipping and I can’t make myself do it just yet purely because of shipping.
