    Be careful if you do the “trim pass” not to go over the same area twice, cause inconsistencies. I am a professional and would recommend letting it go on the driveway and just blowing it off after. If you do a trim pass it’s very easy to hit the same area twice by accident.

  • @Thelawncarenut
    @Thelawncarenut  Před 11 lety

    excellent questions. As far as insects, it depends where you live.
    Personally, I;d say if your lawn is thinning out in summer and losing color you just need to apply proper slow-release organics and keep it irrigated.In addition, you may have summer grassy weeds that are invading and choking out the desireable turf. There are tons of variables, but you should always stick to teh basics:
    1) good fertilization
    2) proper irrigation
    3) mow tall
    also, mulching will not create a thatch issue

    • @carolejackson8357
      @carolejackson8357 Před 3 lety

      What do you mean by mulching? Is that a setting on the mower?

    • @Cookiesalesman
      @Cookiesalesman Před 2 lety

      @@carolejackson8357 mulching is when the mower cut the grass finely and release it back into the lawn for it to use the clippings as fertilizer. Not all mower have the ability to mulch but you can tell if it is a mulching mower by seeing if it have a mulch plug or not.

    ok I gotcha now. I don't recommend seeding right now. The Dimension will stop new seed from growing and we are also into summer and things may get too hot anyway.
    I am about to put out the next step in the program, however, if you have thinned out that much from killing the weeds, I;d recommend hitting the lawn again with the starter fert/.
    Watering - 3 times per week, leave each zone on for 45 - 60 min to get a good 3/4" of irrigation each time. Spread the irrigation cycles out by 48 hours.

    Hi Allen... sounds to me like you got the "construction special" lol In my opinion, you should rent a bobcat with a box blade on it and just turn up the entire thing, seed and water like crazy. Also, if you have a moss issue, that indicates that your soild pH is off and may need a adjusting. You may want to sample 6 or more places around the yard as well - then amend the soil as necessary.

      This whole spreader overlap is driving me nuts. In your project lawn part 2 you stated that you wouldn't use the Weed and Feed product because it spread weed killer everywhere. Well I have over 1/2 acre and weeds are my main integrity with an underlying Moss. I already started Scott Moss Control and Weed and Feed, I have to hold for 4 weeks till I can seed. Its killing my weed yard that I have. I figure get it bare, then plant in Sept.

    Hi Alan, I am in the UK and wonder if you could possibly give me some advice on my lawn? It's never been brilliant as I have three dogs and whilst they don't tear it up, they do wee and poop on it which has killed off great patches of lawn. I don't want to replace it because the same thing will only happen again, but I would like to renovate it a little bit if I can. It is all lumpy and bumpy and I thought I would like to scratch up the dead areas and toss some top soil and grass seed over it but I'm not sure that this would be the best course of action. There's only me and I'm not very able bodied so can't manage to much heavy stuff. Can you possibly make any suggestions as to how I can make the lawn a little presentable again please?

    need help/advise please: single senior woman doing lawn herself for first time due to money issues. I planned to get a Scotts drop spreader to use with their products. I thought drop would be easier to know where I'd already been and also I have a lot of "nooks and crannies" as my lawn isn't a perfect rectangular shape. But the more I read the more it seems a broadcast spreader is best, especially if I'm worried about overlap. But then how do I get into smaller areas where I can't walk at a fast pace up and down and turn around. When I mow these areas I have to go forwards and just pull the mower and mowing backwards. Also, let's say the spreader is dong 5 feet each way and I have a 17 foot width? So I end up with 7 feet left but the spreader is doing 10 feet. That's 2 feet overlap on one side and the other side just throws a ton of stuff against the foundation of my house? Obviously I'm very confused. I thought Scotts made drop spreaders with something that dropped down as you went to mark the lawn so you could see where you'd been but now I can't find them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hey Allyn, The next time I fertilize I plan to do a 2-pass application like you demonstrated here. I just bought a new Earthway spreader with the side spread control feature for my trim pass. When you are putting down a 2-pass application I assume you use a half spread rate (so for Milorganite Earthway EV-N-Spred recommended setting is 19 for bag rate so half rate would be 9.5.) Is it the same for the trim pass or should I use full spread rate for the trim pass and then cut the rate down to half for the grid? Thanks.

      No; when fertilizer comes out of the spreader, think of it coming out in a pyramid shape. There will be more fertilizer in the middle, then it gradually tapers down to where the width of the spread ends. By throwing wheel-to-wheel, it evens those "triangles" out to give you nice, even coverage.

    A much easier way to measure your lawn's square footage is go on Google Maps and find your house from satellite view. Zoom-in until you get close enough to see all your lawn borders. Then right-click on one of your lawn borders and point and click each section of your lawn. If you look and the bottom of your screen, Google Maps actually calculates for you the exact square footage of each section you point and click on the map.

      I don't know the model number, but it's called an "estate spreader" and I got it on Amazon. I like it fine for my lawn which is quite flat, no lumps and only about 7K sq ft. If I had a bumpy lawn I would def go with a spreader with pneumatic tires.
      When I worked for TruGreen, we used Lesco spreaders and they were around $400 each.
