- Everybody knows the "candyman"...you know, look in your bathroom mirror, say "candyman" five times, and he'll appear? Well, this horror story must've started somewhere. That somewhere is 1980s Chicago, when elderly Ruthie Mae McCoy was was tragically killed by "a man entering through her bathroom mirror."

The fact that Ruthie called 911 gives the police probable cause to break down the door!! They don't need a warrant at that point! Unbelievable.
That’s what my husband and I were saying! We both used to work as 911 dispatchers and I started yelling “break down the door!” after no one answered the door after they could hear the doorbell ring.
@theresakaiser2014 that had to be incredibly hard for the two of you to watch. It was hard of me to watch too but I dont know how all of that is supposed to go as far as breaking down the door. Now I am even more frustrated watching it.

She was a Black woman living in the hood. Translation= The authorities don’t care.

Honestly, Ruthie's actual killers are ultimately responsible, but like... the cops and the building managers are just as bad. She called asking for help and saying someone was breaking in and nobody did anything to help her!
The CHA is responsible for failing to keep things updated and maintained. It's a government program, and there is no excuse for any apartment being in such disrepair, and/or not secure. They should have a full maintenance crew, and 24/7 security. They just gave up, and of course the gangs are going to take over if nothing is ever done about anything they do. It's absolutely on them that this poor woman lost her life!
the cops fcked up so much first just with waiting 2 days then with threatening a statement with the poor druggie(?I can never get the people straigt in these)

I finally figured out why you're the only true crime person I can stand to watch: you actually put a lot of emphasis on the victims! A lot of the others often seem like they are glorifying the perpetrators or the investigators, but you usually spend a great deal of time talking about & empathizing with the victims. Thanks for giving them a voice!

I am honestly SUPER here for the no makeup, just talking. I watched this after my night routine, just sitting on the couch sipping tea and it felt like we were just talking and hanging out 😭🥹
The fact she did everything right and had a neighbor saying she would always answer the door just shows they didn’t care so many people mainly the police failed her as during these times happened a lot to poc especially in these run down neighborhoods it’s so sad she deserved better. I find it rather strange that police still need a warrant to enter a property when 2 people reported hearing gun shots and the occupant of said address aren’t answering…
It's to hold officer accountable. Otherwise they would use the "shots were heard" excuses a lot. Also civilians could just say that to get an officer to storm someone's house for no reason
I feel so bad for those people who had to grow up in such conditions, everyone deserved better. 😢

Among all of the MMM videos, this one has to be my favorite. Not only was there a plot, but simply sitting there and chatting to the camera had the feel of a sleepover-you know, like sharing ghost stories or spilling tea with your best friends. I adore it.

It’s such a shame about Ruthie. It was a sign of the times in Chicago, and other cities. In NYC, the projects were a clean, safe place to live in the 50’s and 60s. That changed after the mid 70s, unfortunately things went downhill. It’s the same story of the cities trying to keep poor people in their place. Thank you for your stories, Bailey. You are truly a compassionate person.

@@ana..a. Although not all police are uncaring and corrupt these officers, and the Housing Authority were definitely not doing their job. It was a sign of the times then. Where you live shouldn’t matter. There are many people who are judged by where they live. As a NYC Paramedic, I went into many buildings that that were not in the best areas. I walked into a am apartment once. It was so clean, you could eat off the floor. All people deserve respect.

as a born and raised Chicagoan Thanks for doing this one!! The history of the Projects in Chicago would make a great Dark History episode for you I think, the last two tenants of Cabrini Green were forced out by Judge order in 2010 and the demo was completed in 2011. Now we just have smaller section 8 buildings and small homes in those areas.
There’s still some of the 2 story apartment buildings standing that were part of Cabrini Green. 1 building is still occupied or was in 2019

i know you’ve talked about not wanting to do the jonbenét case before, but i would LOVEEE to see YOUR version of it. i ADORE hearing your commentary on cases like that and i KNOW you and your team would do a wonderful job of really getting the details correct (or as correct as you can). with the evidence that has come up during the years and all that has been proven AND disproven, i think (even though you didn’t want to tell a story that had already been told a million times) you’d would do PHENOMENAL with it :))

Of COURSE the coroner is gonna say that she died quickly and wouldn’t have made it to the hospital, or else the police would’ve had to admit wrong doing. Just like the police blamed the dispatcher for “not logging the call correctly” so they had an excuse to not do their job and enter the apartment.

When I worked in film i had my teen daughter with on a day with him and she just stared at him in terror for most of the day whispering to me, “ that’s candy an” 😂 he was literally the kindest sweetie most soft spoken man you’d ever meet. He did win her owner but she still has a deep respectful fear of his character at least.

Finally lol I asked for this! As a Chicagoan who’s friend grew up near ABLA & it was always a kinda creepy & dangerous area - the property management company NEVER took care of that place. This is why people would always sleep with the bathroom door closed & I still do to this day.

Bailey also said Ruthie was mentally handycapped. I don’t know if this is what Bailey meant or not, but my mother-in-law is mentally handy capped. She is 54, but she acts like she is in her early 70’s with the way she lives.
Yeah ageism is rampant. Average age for women to live to is like 80 in the US , so I guess women spend over a 3rd of their lives being " old" it's ridiculous. 50 something women are not old. 🙄

Congratulations Bailey on your nose surgery! I got my deviated septum repaired in November!! It’s nice for my nose not to to hurt everyday. There’s still allergies but it’s a little better!

That's awesome! There is only one Candyman. Tony was made for that part! I'm totally obsessed with that film, and therefore, him. I watch anything I see Candyman in. Tony seems like he'd be a sweetheart irl. I'd love to meet him someday. He is a gifted actor for sure!
