Why There Are No Parachutes on Passenger Planes

- Hey guys! Do you know that there are special, super-big parachutes... for airplanes? But even an airplane can have a parachute of its own, why don't they supply each passenger on the flight with a personal parachute?! Wouldn't it save hundreds of lives should a crash happen?
Apparently, the answer is "no, it wouldn't." But every commercial airliner has a life-jacket under each seat, so why not shove a little parachute in there as well? Now now, have some patience, because to answer this question, we'll have to talk about some parachuting basics.

SUMMARY:
- Only specially-trained and equipped skydivers jump from altitudes higher than 15,000 ft. Otherwise you risk a lack of oxygen which can lead to confusion at critical times.
- A typical sport parachute and harness weighs about 15 pounds and doesn't come cheap! All the equipment a skydiver needs to own can cost from $6,000 to $9,000!
- Obviously, it's impossible to fit a 4-hour skydiving course in a 10-minute-long pre-flight instruction.
- Experts claim that most people wouldn't even get as far as to get ahold of their chutes.
- On board a commercial airplane that’s going down, there would be about 200 panicking people. Do you think they would patiently wait for their turn to exit the plane?
- If each of 200 passengers on board had a 15-pound parachute of their own, it would add more than 3,000 extra pounds to the flight's weight.
- Moving along, using a parachute to save your life only makes sense if your plane goes down mid-flight.
- The plane would be moving too fast for the passengers to leave it without smacking the side of the aircraft.
- So far, the largest plane equipped with a parachute can carry 5 people at the most.
- Apparently, a parachute can save a small plane that fits several people, but experts aren't so sure about big commercial aircraft.
- For a large plane, it would have to be not one parachute, but a system of chutes.
- The idea of a detachable cabin was first suggested by Gleb Kotelnikov, a Russian inventor, in the 1920s.
- This more than 9-decade-old plan is our best hope to ever equip airplanes with parachutes. Not any time soon, but one day - definitely.

Hey there, BrightSiders! Have you ever wanted to jump with a parachute?
from my childhood
NO!
Sliced carrots??? You mean Kakarot???
No.
No
It’s because airlines don’t want to be sued by the survivors!
But if they die there family can
edjwan it will be cheaper. Medical expenses for life is more expensive
Thank you for not making me watch 10:00 whole waste of life minutes

😅
Lol
If I'm falling towards the ground with a parachute, I'll figure it out.
George Washington You have the rest of your life to figure it out, don’t worry 😉
George Washington best believe that
useless at 35000 feet
You would have a few minutes to figure it out u might flip over on your back and can’t get over and all of that because u don’t know how to skydive
It's better than dying in that plane. At least you have chance to survive.
Oh, skydiving in a thunderstorm is dangerous! Oh, ok then. I'll just smack into the ground instead. At least I won't be in danger!
Nice one🤣
Lol
Hahahaha
ROFL 😂😂
lol
Okay so basically:
- Too expensive
- Too difficult to learn
- People would collide with each other when jumping
- Parachutes for everyone means a lot of weight = a lot of extra fuel = a lot of money
- Crashes mid air happen due to wind or thunder which is dangerous to jump in
The main reason is the plane is going too fast for a safe exit. Too much risk of colliding with wing and tail. They made the calculation which is safer, parachutes or staying in the plane.
One more point: most of the crashes happens during takeoff and landing...
yeah, it's better to die in a crash.
Also is way to impractical
And yet i don't give AF, still give me a parachute!
Who else thinks passengers should still have parachutes regardless
Interesting Topics it will be more expensive for the airline if many passenger survive
@@odtuhan it would be the opposite (people usually have families /countries/society baking them so airlines don't go killing people off)
I think knowing all of this we should be allowed to bring our own parachute and more needs to be done. They now can destroy a person on an airplane or the whole airplane itself by remote so why are they not using knowledge to save lives? It is messed up! The whole system is messed up.

Ive asked this question for years ...finally im going get a answer
man to be honest I have this question from a long time.
I always thought that having parachute will reduce the fatality rate.
It would
But it‘s too expensive and heavy.
it will definitely. when i was younger I was skydiving and its not hard to learn. And to survive I would just need a minute to tell someone what to do. Not 4 or 5 hours. But yeah its to expensive thats the main reason.
@@Stillstanding1 how would you like to jump off a plane going 800km/h at 10 000m?
@@niconico3907 so maybe idk slow the plane down? wont be hard i guess
How about installing parashoot inside the head rest and ejecting every seat one by one in case of emergency.
Money. Simple
Money money money
and you're also talking bout ejector seats all the bags make the plane heavier meaning more fuel is needed and then the bags themselves are so expensive and most people wouldn't even know what to do that's not gonna happen
I always thought about ejecting entire rows, in sequence and each of them with their own parachute. I know, I know... money
It has nothing to do with safety because the pairachuts could be attached to the passengers seat and automatically timed to eject only a few at a time and when its safe enough to do so...done see Every problem solved that easy ,now its all about cost and design...
This is the answer of my question since I was a child.
Thank you,
Mr. Bright Side👍❤️
Thanks for this video -it’s very insightful. I am qualified military parachutists -the feeling and silence in the air (under the canopy) is just amazing.

U r one in 8 billion that's cycled through trillions of human beings.
It‘s way too heavy.
lol but true thooo
its because 50% of people that travel will not travel as often which leads to many airlines going bankrupt because of how expense the plane ticket will become... its as simple as that.. ticket prices will raise by at least 100% if they implement this idea.
2:46 So the only reason they risk hundreds of lives is that they want to reduce the cost, money wins over lives.
Multiply $7000 by 200 for every plane that a commercial airline owns that a lot of money and it’s not possible
Also planes travel from about 12000 to 30000 feet at cruising speed so it’s useless the air is very thin and you probably will dies before you hit the ground

The government is what keeps aviation safe, not the airline companies. In fact, it’s the profit-motive that halts aviation safety.
If airline CEO can’t make a profit, then what is worth to them? This is why I believe all industries, aviation or other wise, should be democratically owned by the engineers and workers. Having to depend for innovation on one person is inefficient for creating safe scientific outcomes.
lollypop rogue Not only Money, parachutes are too heavy.
Most people do.
Same reason why most buses don't have seat belts.
But the planes do
Forget about parachutes! I just want an ejector seat
Ejector seat deploys a parachute
@@danpineda4447 GTAV military pilots don’t have parachutes but a fancy ejection system
Ejector seat means they would have to build a bigass glass on top or bottom of plane
Having piloted (many) times an aircraft with a brs parachute system, I can tell you that it does provide a decent chance for survival PROVIDED you aren’t in the take-off or landing phase of flight. Unfortunately, I knew a pilot who was practicing take-offs and landings one afternoon and (sadly) they had neither the time nor the altitude to activate the parachute. That said, I wouldn’t hesitate to fly any plane with a brs installed. My wife, in fact, insists on it.
I also once read about a suggested system where not the passengers, but their seats would be equipped with such systems. So in an emergency, a hood would flap over their head for O2 supply and their seat belts would strap them automatically, then the back of the plane would open and all the passengers would slide down the rails where the seats are attached to, one after the other, pretty much mass-dumping them in just a few seconds out of the plane, where then the seats would wait until they are at the perfect deploying height.

Bright side: the world is a kettle
I flew to a skydive “boogie” and took my skydiving “rig” aka the full skydiving set up; a main canopy, a reserve canopy, the harness and container for the parachutes, on a commercial flight. So actually sometimes there are parachutes on airplanes 😀
I have asked this same question for many years so thanks so much for your insight. Sending much unconditional love and gratitude! I always thought a plane should be able to land in water and also have wheels which would make more sense when accidents occur. Also if the positive military provided the airplane with survival extensive medical kits and various medical tools that could that could help survivors that could occur in many type of scenarios and food for 2 weeks for everyone that bought a ticket on that airplane including crew and also a very well trained nurse/doctor! Also involving the medical profession with the above mentioned. So whether you land in snow, ice, water, land, jungle, etc. People would have everything they needed to help others and maybe themselves in times of trouble and difficulty. And perhaps like a huge bubblenose or huge airbag at the nose of the airplane for crashing and a way to put out engine fires and have a special energency engine like a backup generator that could override and take over if these things occur and help in the loss of power and engines. And a training program everyone can take in order to know how to operate what is provided in case of emergency before their flight and learn how to operate various things. Or what about Plasma Light ships! But those of the Light know more about what I know for the future. So you have that choice landing on water or land! There is alot of opportunities to make it much better for everyone and start with space between seats. How about bringing all proffesions together in this technology with their ideas! That way everything is covered! Then it is not one person's ideas and a whole array of ideas for the people by the People! Not corporations! And know common law and Univeral Law. Maps and compasses and flashlights, and a protected book on Travel destinations and all about the areas around with important information one will need to know for understanding and knowledge, etc... provided. @@PabloGonzalez-hv3td and as a normal human being. it's Stillwater better than nothing at all. who knows 50% of these passengers knew already how to operate such stuff. so yeah it's better than nothing.
@@JekylViovicente - Experience is largely irrelevant.
It's paradoxical on an airliner in that the failure modes that are stable platforms for 100s of jumpers likely don't justify vacating the aircraft in the first place. And the failure modes that do justify jumping are likely not suitable situations for anyone to jump. And I'm not sure what you propose we do with the disabled, elderly and children.
This is without getting into the nuances of parachuting from airliners on the best of days.
As a bit of irony, a typical sport parachute and aircraft wings are functionally the exact same thing anyways - Airfoils.
Which is why aircraft do not fall like rocks in the event of complete engine failure.
If the aircraft is structurally sound and there is directional control you're typically better off staying in the aircraft.
People can learn such things in one day or two to save their lives lol

Nice cartoon graphics you use to support your explanations 😂
I love them 😂
thank's you answered the question that i ask myself every times i go on a plane
I've got a simple response to the arguments in this video: D.B. Cooper. He jumped out of a 727 in a thunderstorm and probably survived.
Except that he forced the pilots to decrease the altitude, fly at the slowest possible speed almost stalling the aircraft - and we still have no idea if he actually survived the jump.
He survived the jump, but not the Bigfoot encounter.
*probably*
Something is better than nothing. Going with the parachute anyway
Done already but from 1100 feet's only 😅... interesting thing is that initially j was also thinking that the plane should have a parachute for cabin only...and at the end you explained it...! 👍
Not only would parachutes make flight more expensive(and therefore less accessible), but the number of people who die in plane crashes per year is minuscule compared to the number of people who fly or even compared to the number of plane crashes that actually happen. Pilots are trained to do everything in their power to save the plane and its passengers, and they succeed the vast majority of the time. In the rare case that they don’t, it’d be way too late to organize everyone to parachute off of the plane.
Hmm it'll be cool if they could add the huge plane parachute to commercial planes, that sounds safe
EDIT: Nevermind it's already mentioned

I have always thought about this as well.
Even military cargo aircraft only carry enough parachutes for the flight crew, only to be used if the plane is shot down in combat. No additional chutes are carried for passengers.
For commercial airlines, assuming all the passengers were trained in parachuting, most airline crashes occur in take off or landing, where parachutes are worthless. Once in flight, if the aircraft has a catastrophic failure, you won't have time to bail out. If the aircraft is flyable enough to stay airborne, there is no need to bail out.
I'm relating it with Iphone's battery life problem😵😁
Why not just make the plan seat a parachute itself, that way you can detach it when needed 🙄
