That's Why Airplane Seats Are Almost Always Blue

  • Have you ever noticed how airplane seats are almost always blue, and have you ever wondered if there’s a special reason for that? We’re going to answer this and other popular plane-related questions and also help you pick the best seat aboard as a bonus.
    With the stress and apprehension that comes with traveling, especially by air, airlines understood that it’s important to calm passengers down and reassure them that everything’s gonna be alright. It turns out blue is the perfect color to send that message.
    As for materials, the seats can be upholstered with either faux leather or fabric. As a rule, in aircrafts used for long-distance flights, like transatlantic ones, the seats are upholstered with fabric because it’s more breathable for the skin, so passengers won’t sweat, chafe, or experience any discomfort.
    Tracks on the floor of the aircraft allow rows of seats to be organized at the airline’s discretion, so companies take advantage of this in order to install as many seats as they can physically cram into the space. That’s why plane windows don’t line up with the seats.
    Most planes are painted white to save money on fuel. The heavier the plane is (and it gets heavier when painted), the more fuel it needs. The color white also reflects light better, which means the plane won’t overheat because of the sun’s rays. Plus, white makes it easier to notice cracks, leaks, and any other damage that needs to be fixed.
    The temperature onboard is kept close to freezing for a reason. Many airplane passengers get hypoxia, which is when a person is more likely to faint at high altitudes than on the ground. It happens when bodily tissues don’t get enough oxygen. To minimize the risk of it, airlines keep the temperature low.

    SUMMARY
    -According to scientists, most people associate the color blue with reliability and safety, which is essential even for travelers who don’t suffer from aerophobia. Blue slows down your heart rate and relaxes tension.
    -As a rule, in aircrafts used for long-distance flights, the seats are upholstered with fabric because it’s more breathable for the skin. Artificial leather works great for short flights. It’s extremely wearproof, and even spilled drinks don’t stain it.
    -Plane windows don’t line up with the seats because airlines care about profits and try to install as many seats as they can physically cram into the space.
    -Planes are white out of economy: paint can make a plane anywhere from 600-1,200 lbs heavier, and the heavier the aircraft is, the more fuel it needs.
    -To minimize the risk of passengers fainting, airlines keep the temperature and air pressure in the cabin really low.
    -On flights that are longer than 10½ hours, pilots take turns resting in private bunks for the crew. In case there’s no special rest area onboard or if the flight isn’t that long, pilots take a break in the seat rows within or near the cockpit or even in the passenger cabin.
    -If you don’t want to listen to the hum of the engine throughout your whole flight, then choose a seat closer to the airplane’s nose. If you’re tall, be sure to sit next to the emergency exit.

      Actually when performing an emergency landing it's more common for the tail to hit the ground first. if you really want to be safe you will sit closer to the nose. the only way you're going to be hurt in the nose is if your plane loses it's tail.

    The two references to airlines being "greedy" require a response. The fact that airlines pack as many people into planes as possible is indeed driven by the desire to save money. But it's the *customers* who are driving this, not the airlines. Given a choice between more space and a lower price, most customers choose the lower price. This means that airlines that can pack in more seats and then pass on the cost savings to customers in the form of lower prices gain market share.
    For the record, US airline profit margins are around 2% to 3%.

      PinKushin , I disagree, the business chooses what they think is an optimal profit generating scheme, and it is people in the business that has been given too much power to decide what is implemented, and as people they can get it wrong more often than not. As people they can just follow what other airlines are doing, and as people they can be greedy, and can be biased against the common good, although I believe most try to be more professional. Your so-called liberty is just another excuse to give up more freedom to shareholder interests, I think shareholders should be held more accountable to businesses' mistakes, then you probably will get more freedom.

    • @AntonyDavies
      @AntonyDavies Před 6 lety +6

      You are confusing asking price with selling price. Businesses do indeed have the power to ask whatever prices they want. Consumers, however, have the power to accept those prices or to walk away. The selling price, which is what matters, is the price that businesses ask *and* that consumers agree to pay.
      This is why, for example, the price of an airline ticket (on a per mile basis) has fallen by 50% over the past three decades.

    I fly the same airline pretty much all the time. I emerites a couple times when I went to Dubai but I usually always fly aer lingus because the head quarters are in my local airport and they fly all over Europe and American. The short distance flight seats are blue leather and the long distance seats are green upholstery. Thats what I remember. I haven't been abroad in nearly 3 years. I'm going to Spain next week and I'm just happy to get out of the country. the queues in security are mental at the moment. My dad was in new York for business last week and he usually does cast track security because he has the option since he flies business but they were short of staff and fast track was closed. He then queued 3 hours in security. The flight was delayed because even the pilot got stuck in security. I forgot how stressful travel is.

    When you remove the waffle: the colour blue calms the passengers, dirt stains etc are less visible. Long distance is fabric as it’s more breathable, fake leather is spillproof and more durable. Windows don’t line up with seats because airlines put more seats in, so it messes up the lining. They are white because it’s more efficient, weight and cost, and won’t overheat, and will show up cracks etc, and easier to spot if it crashes. It’s cold to prevent health issues, such as fainting. Pilots sleep in private bunks (A380 has it below decks), most planes share bathrooms with staff and customers, apart from the b747, and a few others. Closer to front is quieter, and meals are served first. Tall people sit near emergency exit, but they don’t recline.

    Also keep in mind some aircraft have the emergency row exit near the center lavatory. I had an emergency row seat on a 5-hour flight and other passengers were constantly waiting in front of my seat, one passenger even stepped on my feet....I ended up with less room than had I chosen a normal row. But of course, that's from the rudeness of other passengers.

    1. Calm passengers
    2. Relax ppl
    3. Stains less visible
    4. Long distance flight fabric (less discomfort)
    That’s all for seat color rest are random facts (your welcome) :)

    Last rows are usually reserved on long haul flights so you're likely to end up with a row to yourself or 2 people in a 3 seat row. I've also gotten served first at the last row. Plus no one behind you to kick the back of the seat. They don't recline which can be a deal breaker for some people, but I actually prefer to sleep straight up. Pillow at lower back and angle the top of the seat back to cradle my neck.

    • @alvexok5523
      @alvexok5523 Před 9 měsíci

      You're lucky that you can sleep straight up, I need to be reclined. And yes, back rows don't recline at all because of the wall behind the seats. Economy seats in general still don't recline enough to where I can get comfortable. I'd definitely sleep better in business class where the seats there now on most airlines recline almost flat. But since I can't afford business class, I will try to save money for premium economy for the next time I fly long distance, I know that United has premium economy, and their seats recline a few inches more than regular economy, the seats are an inch or two wider, have more legroom between rows, and even though it's no business class, I think that I'd just be comfortable enough to be able to get a few hours shuteye, plus if I combine that with positioning my pillow like you said to cradle my lower back and neck. Also, I think that premium economy even serves better quality food then reg economy, and they have bigger TV screens on seatback.

    You got some things wrong, like the plane overheating if it were painted other than white, no it’s because the composite material will expand when hot and deflate when cool, so by making it thermally reflective, in other words, painting it white so the heat isn’t absorbed as easily it puts less stress on the airplane and can fly longer before maintenance or before it’s permanently grounded

    The bonus tips aren't very accurate. The front rows get served meals first, but only guaranteed if you sit on the port (or left) side of the cabin. On many flights, if the seats are rowed up as 2 3 2, then the cart goes down the port aisle first, and then reverses up the starboard aisle to serve those passengers. So if you're sitting at the front on the starboard side, you may actually be served last. As for minimizing engine noise by sitting towards the front, that is true. But, in a crash, statistics prove that the passengers in the rear of the plane have a higher probability of survival. For me, I avoid the first row of seats because facing a bulkhead, you have nowhere to stretch your legs, and you have no place to stow your carry on luggage for take off and landing... other than in the overhead bins. As for choosing the exit rows for extra legroom, that is partially accurate. The seat in front of an exit row can never recline, so it won't be pushed up against your knees for the flight. If there are two exit rows one behind the other, the first row of emergency exit seats can't recline, but the last row can. The one tip they mention that I do fully support is the use of sites like seatguru.com to figure out what your seat is really going to be like. The colour code the seats for bad (red), yellow (caution... like close to a washroom, or can't recline), and green (best). If you know your flight number and date, the site can automatically choose the aircraft type that is scheduled for that flight, and that's important because some airlines may have three different versions of a 747, and the seating layout will be different for each variant. My recommendation? Get yourself a set of sound cancellation headphones. The best investment you can make. Better sound with the in-flight entertainment system, but more importantly, it can minimize the sound of the engines... and that screaming baby in the row behind you. The other thing you
    might consider is carrying some sanitizing wipes to use on the seat tray. Those are the filthiest part of a plane, because people do horrid things on them. Change babies. Rest their feet on them. Sneeze, cough and gag on them. Nuf said... enjoy your flight.

    I remember inside the TWA aircrafts in the 1980s the seats being red, and the seats in United aircrafts in the 1980s being orange. But when I flew United again in the 1990s, the seats were then blue (and TWA went out of business). With British airways, I remember that the seats were orange in the early 1980s and blue in the 1990s. I guess overall that it wasn't until the 1990s (or maybe late 1980s) when most airlines realized the importance of blue seats that are described in this video
