My favorite description of this performance/song is "It's like watching a man sing at his own funeral."
Very accurate. That's how I certainly felt watching this when it premiered. :( RIP Layne
Sad but true 😢
Thanksssss crying again lol
Phenomenally put. RIP kid.
To me this song highlights his never ending battle with addiction. It's a battle that never ceases once it begins. We pick our poison and thus it begins. It's a battle we ultimately fight alone. Thinking we always have control but something inside knows you really don't. This song speaks of that journey and anyone who walks that path will understand it.
The best thing MTV ever did was the ‘Unplugged’ series. Everyone of those albums is a gift to the world.
All the unplugged sessions are awesome
90s only
They're so good it gives people a warped idea of what MTV was like back in the day. It was 90% playing the same 5 pop hits of the day again and again with some rock played some nights. But they did these amazing Unplugged concerts and now many young people think, omg MTV was incredible back then! But on the whole it really wasn't and actually made the music industry more about image than music, way more than it was pre MTV. Generally speaking, MTV was not good for music. But AT LEAST they gave us Unplugged.
I wish I could agree completely with you, but ...Korn unplugged.....not the best IMHO. :/
Baloney headbangers ball is the best thing
AS A RECOVERING ADDICT IT WAS PAINFUL TO WATCH A MAN WHO LOST HIS BATTLE WITH THE BEAST. TWO YEARS CLEAN AND JUST WANT TO LIVE. R.I.P. LAYNE.
Godspeed brother, stay healthy.
Layne is a legend! Stay clean Brother!
Congratulations to you. RIP Layne❤
I hope you’re doing well. Addiction is absolutely a beast.
Ahhh wow! Hang in there and continue greatness💖
Jar of Flies was written and recorded in seven days. Each song was done in one or two takes. There is no greater commentary on the genius of this band.
So as "Long gone day" it took them about 2 hours:) Staley writing a line, Than Lanegan adding a line, than again Staley...:)The genius of Layne.
Yeah. The more I listen, the more depth I feel and appreciate their music!
There is no greater commentary of the genius of No Excuses.
One of the best bands of all time
Meanwhile, it takes Metallica 8 years to release 1 mediocre album.
What you just witnessed was an artist near the end of his journey.. If you watch Layne's earlier performances.. he was a lot more lively and energetic... He had been weathered by years of heroin abuse at this point.. The gloves were to hide the tracks on his hands. This.. sadly... was not Layne Staley at his best.. and while it is an absolutely brilliant and haunting performance... The words he sang were literally his torture. Fills my heart with as much pain as it does joy to watch this video. RIP Layne Staley.. You are missed by many!
Beautifully said brother.
And crack unfortunately
And they didn’t show a side of his face because he was losing teeth he was in horrible condition and hey still have the best unplugged show ! I’d argue that they’re the best band ever (with layne)
Couldn’t agree more. He was a shell of his self here and still killed it...this MTV Unplugged is so raw and emotional it literally makes me want someone to rescue Layne. His demons are on full display and yes... he did this better than the studio version. He will forever be missed...RIP Layne...
Sad but true 👍🏽🤘🏽
Careful bro. Once AIC get hold of you they don’t let go. One of the greatest bands. Great review dude.
What do you mean be careful? Not letting go from AiC is a great thing cause they're awesome
Tyrone Evans : You nailed it on the head!!!!!!!!!
Mxulin indeed my guy 🤙🏻

The “I’d feel better dead” always gives me chills
I read this right as he sang it
I think it's something we all secretly think . Behind the jokes.

Abso-fkn-lutely. Every single time
SIDE NOTE:
Here is a little story about Layne that I thought his devoted fans would find interesting, possibly even touching.
In the Heart book Kicking and Dreaming, Ann Wilson revealed that Layne attended a party at her home around 1999. She said after most of the crowd left at night Layne was still there, and she wanted to go swimming so Layne followed her to the pool. Layne didn’t get in, but sat in a chair sipping a beer. He told her as a kid that he excelled at swimming, he said “I loved to dive into water.” He said the water felt like a whole other world. As Layne sat there and Ann was swimming, a huge meteor went over them and it lit up Layne’s face. She said he looked like a kid again, and at that moment there was no darkness in his life. Layne said, “Did you see that? How close do you think that was to us, Ann? Do you think that almost hit us, Ann? How lucky are we to have seen that?” Ann responded that it was beautiful, and Layne retorted, “Do you have any idea how rare it is for a meteor that big, and that bright, to come that close to us? We are really really lucky people Ann. You and me.”
Here is a link to these interesting Factoids in case anyone wants to check them out.

Beautiful
Omg
That’s amazing. I know her husband is Cameron Crowe who directed Singles which AIC was in and they had a pretty good friendship. Good story.
That hit me in the feels. Thank you for sharing that
It's hard to believe that people are hearing songs for the first time that I've been listening to you for years
I haven’t even hear this song or band. Sounds like a metal band name too. Now I don’t know if I should listen to the song or wait
@@TheWalper If you haven't already i suggest checking out their stuff. They were labeled as "grunge " because they got popular around the time grunge got big( 1991) but are a bit more heavier and at the time I was a kid into rap music but as soon as I heard Alice in chains i became an instant fan. Songs to start with: (We die young, Bleed the freak, Man in the box, Them bones, Angry chair, Rooster, No excuse, i stay away) I chose mostly their biggest songs because that's what got me into them and then listening to the rest was like uncovering magic. Songs like the one in this video(nutshell)while amazing i think are appreciated more after you've become familiar with the band and know what frontman Layne Staley went through with addiction before passing away in 2002.
I love "Jar of Flies"... But "Dirt" has something deep and primal in it. The .. emotional everything.. of that heroin addiction album...
Junkhead... sets the whole stage for what you will experience.
There's a first for everyone!
Oh yeah I totally agree with that! The new generation is actually learning what amazing music is all about!
Layne died in such a horrible way, needle in his leg sitting up on his couch. Wasn’t found for 2 weeks. AIC bass player Mike Starr saw Layne last in the apartment he ended up dying in, they argued about Layne’s drug addiction and Mike got pissed off, Layne asked him as he was walking out the door to please not leave, Mike left any way and Layne ended up od’ing and died. It fucked with Mike really bad the rest of his life, all the way up until he too died from a drug overdose.
True, except that the bass player here is Mike Inez. Starr left/was let go in 1993.
And it's also "friends dont let friends get friends haircuts "
I see someone read the unofficial auto biography. Great read. Mike was high on Valium. Layne got pissy. Ironically. But I understand. April 4th is a bad day. Same day Kurt died. Side note. Letting mike go never sat right with Layne.
TP You are correct sir, thanks for the clarification!
The friends don't let friends get haircuts was a slight to Metallica from my understanding. I didn't know that two of their members had OD'd. I just had a friend OD on heroin last week. we didn't see each other much anymore but we grew up together and she had such a sweet soul but had been through sexual trama and all sorts of things in her life. I live in North Alabama, there is an episode of intervention about where I live in title they call it magic mountain but about seven years ago heroin made a comeback for the first time since the 70s and now people are dropping like flies. If anyone reads this and needs help please see the treatment you need and deserve before it's too late.
Yes Nirvana were the poster-children, Soungarden were technically superior and Pearl Jam were the better song writers, but AiC were the epitome of that era.
AiC has the ability to connect to its audience at such a raw level, it's almost like having a friend beside you for all days
AIC was THE best band from Seattle and are still amazing. Jerry is an absolute genius!
AMEN!
Weird that the dudes who hated the fame the most were also the poster children.
they’re all great in their own ways, they’re all so dark too
Layne and Kurt barely crossed paths but everyone in their circles say that they are very similar people. Very sensitive, with a heart for the underdog, biting hilarious sense of humor, courageously vulnerable and honest, dark and self destructive. It's too bad they couldn't have known each other and helped one another I'm their lifetimes. I had this idea of a painting of them hugging and crying in heaven that would be very powerful I think.
Paint it and I’ll buy it
So eerie that they died on the same day
I'm pretty sure they toured together.
I saw a video, where Layne featured some videos he liked, and one of them was "heart shaped box" by Nirvana, and Layne said, he was so happy for them, that they put out such a great song with such a cool video, and that they put their critics to shame with that. He clearly liked them.
Only way to get to heaven is thru Jesus Christ. I hope the two of them called out to the Lord for forgiveness. Even though they were addicts, the Bible says "all who call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved" Romans 10:13 Such beautiful talent was God given, no doubt. I hope Curt and Layne are singing praises and at peace before God's throne.
Layne was so sick during this performance, however he still mastered the vocals without trying.
Yeah. Heroin took all the greats.
@@PeteyC_AZ heroin MADE all the greats...
@@kikoredog not true brother. Layne was great and successful b4 he got on the needle

The unplugged version of the song "Down In A Hole" is so awesome too. Do yourself a favour a listen to the whole unplugged album. IMO it's the best unplugged album ever made!!
No doubt about it, hands down the best unplugged ever.
Yep!!! Watch the whole show! Layne is super high on heroin but he still sounds Amazing.

He fought that battle so alone that he died on the April 5th and wasn't found until the 19th. Completely heart breaking and soul crushing.
I'm glad to see a younger generation feeling his music. In that he is remembered he will never be gone...
You'll find a group of us, including me, that to this day still listen to AIC and can't believe how many years have passed.. this is still my favorite band of all time. Pure musical genius!.
Mine too.
Jar of flies stays in my cd player all day everyday
Yep. I bought Dirt about 16 years ago, but had heard Rooster, Bones, Man in a Box and the other singles already and loved them. I didnt watch the MTV Unplugged until a few years ago. I cry ever time, and lament missing out on ever seeing this band live...such power, such angst, makes you wanna scream with him. I'm so angry that Laynes gone. I'm angry that he died alone. I'm angry that the Unplugged gig was his funeral. It's not fair that such a bright star had to burn out so young....but I keep their music close to me always
My favorite of all time, I still listen to all of their music and mad season!

It doesn't matter where i am, this song still makes me cry. Battling addiction and depression for so many years, i can relate.
This performance made me fall in love with acoustic bass.
It’s so sad to me how lonely Layne seemed to feel even among millions of his fans he had. That’s the pain of addiction for you.
You could be doing anything at any place with anyone you ever wanted and it wouldn’t even compare to a high off g or h..Only addicts know how hard this is and will always be.
No that's depression. His drug addiction was because of his depression
Something about 90's artists that are no longer with us had their own unique voice that made their music so incaptivating
They carry so much emotion in their voice, and more often than not, that emotion came from a place of pain.
Heroin addiction. Hate to say it, but it makes the best artists and unfortunately takes them from us at the same time
Facts. Pure and unaltered. No over production.
Pretty sure the word is “captivating”. Nice job though creating a word that doesn’t exist.
@@brettrun8575 What a douchebag comment. We might need related. Lmao
This is an emotional one. One thing to note in this concert is that Jerry is always keeping his eye on Layne cause Layne was really messed up from drugs and Jerry was watching his back.
Wasn't Layne going through withdrawal during this concert?
You said it, and I didn’t even read all the comments but yes! Makes me sad, yet it’s a mirror to most of our lives.
@@werewolf2003002 it was kurt cobain. They had to give him heroine before they performed.

For those of you who didn't know Layne struggled heavily with his addiction to heroin, and it's very apparent in this performance. What you witnessed was nothing short of a sad, defeated man singing at his own funeral. Everyone who truly understood Layne knew that the moment they aired this on MTV all those years ago. And we all Wept. RIP Layne

I completely agree. Their whole performance is perfect. But when they do Sludge Factory, Staley messes up, and he makes it funny. But they cut it out of the record. RIP Layne!
Cantrell is everything. Nice to see a younger fella appreciate this. Unpluggeds were such a big deal when they came out. The layers of meaning, and hence history, in this video gives me goosebumps.
His voice was everything that's right in the world. Miss you, Layne!
For me, as simplistic as the song is it's probably the most emotional song on the album
"Love, Hate, Love" from Alice in Chains, Live at the Moore Theatre. i don't know you'll find a better vocal performance from Layne than that right there.
Kurt Borchers his voice is absolutely amazing in that song !! peels paint off the walls
Abso-fucking-lutely!
100% agree, that is a killer performance!
Dallas 1990 is a way better version
100%
This is the version of the song that already gave you chills down your spine, just make you completely go numb. Huge emotion, seeing how many people loved this band, and loved layne staley. I was born in 94, and will forever say Layne is the greatest voice to come out of the 90's.
God I loved his voice. Jerry Cantrell is underrated
Cantrell is out of this world talented
Layne sung a lot about his own death.
He knew he wouldn't live a long life in my opinion.
I think he knew when he sang this his time was near. Dudes body had already paid for the last one way ticket
First song of the first álbum...
Man, I consider myself a manly man but everytime I see this performance, I end up crying and my heart breaks when I think of Layne Staley and how his life ended, especially since this was one of his last shows. R.I.P. Layne.
Man...I hear you. I hate it that he's gone.
The first note he sings brings me to tears

My second favorite song from Alice in Chains
Probably the 2nd most powerful and meaningful performance. Watching Layne let Jerry sing, something so deep about that.

In June of 97 I was almost murdered, 3 weeks before my 18th birthday. After leaving the hospital, I had to have my parents make a bed in the living room floor for me. I had staples all in my head holding it together. I was beat with a pool ball in a sock. I had AIC Unplugged on VCR tape and watched it over and over laying there taking pain pills. I will never ever forget that! That's what I remember about AIC Unplugged! Just figured I would share.

Holy shit that's insane in glad your okay
I'm really sorry to hear that man. I hope you're doing alright

Dat Man Antifa lol
This song hits hard for me as it brings me back to the 90's and in my early teens. Fast forward to being in my 40's now and "I'd feel better dead" is something that really resonates with me.
Im glad more and more people are now discovering AIC, and realizing how beautiful that performance was despite the hell Layne was going through at that time. I still vividly remember listening to this song for the first time at a point in my life where I was dealing with struggles of my own, and listening to it still brings tears to my eyes like no ever track has ever done before. Its a sad, yet otherworldly feeling all over again. Truly a gem.
Alice in Chains - Down in a hole (MTV Unplugged). Trust me on this one.
Yep. Especially when Layne is letting and watching Jerry sing. Deep.
You havee to react to their song Love Hate Love live at The Moore. Layne's vocal peak imo.
This! Thank you!
Man in the Box from the same show is also worth checking out.
Yes, please!
Yes I totally Agree!!!!
@@tyroneevans3202 that whole show was great but You can tell he was High as shit on heroin. So was Kurt Cobain. So Sad I Miss Them Both😞
With the Unplugged show, he was deep in the heroin addiction, so much so that he knew his liver was shot to hell, but he hadn't isolated himself completely yet. If you listen to Jerry Cantrell talk about Layne, all he saw when he looked over at Layne during the Unplugged show was that his best friend was dying and there was nothing he could do. Layne was such a ghost of himself during the Unplugged show. The whole show is heartbreaking to watch.
Kurt Cobain's attitude turned me off grunge until I saw AIC. Layne Staley's vocal range (even in 1998) could run Saturn rings around anything Kurt did. Layne was better than any other grunge singer in my opinion.
To see Layne Staley in his prime: Love Hate Love live at The Moore in 1990, untouchable perfection as far as a live performance by a rock band.
This might sound crazy but Heroin doesn’t hurt your liver. Now if you contract Hepatitis, it will fuck your liver up but the Heroin itself won’t destroy your liver.
@@keefwins04 He was doing other drugs on top of Heroin and his liver was damaged.
Chris Cornell might be the only grunge singer with more talent than Layne, but no one else was really close to the two of them. Both A+.
The reason he was so calm was that he had just had enough heroine to get him not sick & not asleep. I read about this show. It was those few seconds from history not being made but timing worked out perfectly!

da ra not entirely true. They played support slot for Kiss on July 3rd ‘96. That was the last performance.
Who else is having flashbacks of watching this on VHS that you rented from blockbuster while getting stoned with your buds, constantly commenting on how amazing Lane sounds?
As to your comments about Layne, and how he just came out on stage in sunglasses, sat down, kept it simple and sang the song.
He was pretty much an introvert.
Often times he would spend alone in his apartment shooting up, going into a dark place of despair, and then put it all his thoughts and feelings on paper.
Then he would just show up to band practice, lay down the lyrics until it was a song and then go off by himself and get lost in the world of drugs and self isolation.
It’s rough to say, but that’s what most people who are addicted to heroin do. They Shut out the world.
It’s too bad he paid the price with his life before he could get his shit together.
Thank God we still have his music.

Everytime I see this them going on stage ALL of them alive with their fierce music!! DEEP!! RIP Layne and Mike!!⚘🎶👏
I HIGHLY recommend watching this entire performance. 👌 plus this was their first time live together in like 3 years.
This was one of Layne's last few performances. His last one was July 3rd, 1996. He retreated into seclusion after the love of his life passed away Oct 29th, 1996. April 5th, 2002 he passed away in his Seattle condo and he wasn't found until 2 weeks after he passed, alone. Heartbreaking.
The band says Layne was such an incredible singer that he could get a song on like the 1st or 2nd take.
Layne was struggling very badly in this concert. He had already lost his fiancee to her heroin related death and began his full speed race to his own grave. The entire gig still leaves me in tears because his intense introverted addictive demons were mindfucking him thru this entire show.
He lived a few more years after this but this was one of his final public performances.

"That is better than the studio version" many people feel that AIC unplugged set was the best of all the unplugged sets and people feel the songs in AIC unplugged are better than the studio.
He was not "near death". He lived another 6 years. Don't get me wrong, he was definitely deteriorating - but he wasn't dying. Back in 1996, we hadn't seen Layne/AiC perform in over 2 years. At the time, we THOUGHT this unplugged show was AiC making a comeback. We did NOT think it was some kind of "farewell show"... Ultimately, that's what it turned out to be - but we didn't realize it at the time. Looking back, it makes the unplugged show absolutely amazing - but it took hindsight for that to become apparent.

The message written on the bass guitar reads "friends don't let friends give friend haircuts"! This was referring to Metallica who was in the audience with their new short haircuts!
And then Jerry cut his years later.
But then again that's his opinion too...so if someone wants to change their appearance or get a haircut that's up to them...you can't be hypocritical of other people...people have rights to do what they want too...stop the fighting...

Seeing Layne look so defeated and grey almost sickly was shocking to me when I first saw the unplugged video. I had listened to AIC as a child and teen in the nineties. Alex needs to do this one!
Tom Ramirez PLEASE
I like how you said “that’s haunting”. Because that live performance, was exactly that. Especially when you know what happens later. Layne was a tortured soul, with an iconic voice. He wasn’t found dead until 2 weeks afterwards, which to me is the saddest part. He was a legend.
I've listened to Alice in Chains for decades and I really hate I'll never get to see them again. His voice is epic on every level. One of the greatest. I listened to this album on repeat for over a year straight it felt like while going through some issues and it always got be through even the last few years battling 2 primary cancers and one terminal. Yet, I've won in a sense while others didn't and that's something nobody can prepare you for, survivors guilt. I know we all will not make it out of life alive but it is still tough.
This version is Gold
If you love this “haunting” version of Layne’s voice...
Then
You MUST listen to “Wake Up” from Mad Season. Arguably Layne’s best vocal performance in My opinion...
Makes Your arm hair stand up. Enjoy.
Wake up is one of the greatest songs he's ever recorded. People dont truly understand unless they've been there or they are there
If we talk about Live vocal performance, I think his best was Love hate love from 90 in Seattle. On album I always found Confusion to be really interesting. Wake up is great though.
I also love River of Deceit !
Me too bro. ‘Wake up’ is amazing!
@@scottcomfrey6633 Fr. People either just don't get wake up at all or it's one of the best things you've ever heard. If you can relate, it's a beautiful but scary and sad and wonderful thing to listen to all at once.
AIC is one of very few bands that sounds better in person than their CDs.
Having an album mixed by someone who doesn't know what the fuck he's doing doesn't really help. I'm refering to their Three Legged Dog album, it sounds awful. And yes, the Unplugged versions are times better.
Queen
Theyre not the only band but ok
Ridiculous claim.
@@Chris-Ian Na that album is incredible and i see a lot of people saying its their favourite.
That Layne and Cobain reference you made at the end of the video like rockstars don’t wanting to be rockstars was so spot on man.
Been listening to this band for years. I can't believe that most have never heard this version or haven't even watched the entire Alice in Chains Unplugged. Y'all are missing out on so so much. I named my son after Layne. That's how much I love Layne and this band. Rip Layne Staley.
I it is so emotional performance that took me a while to watching this without crying. Layne Stanley was the best💓
Asencja P Layne Staley was awesome too.
Its a tough one to watch
I’ve never been able to watch it without crying. He was my favorite of all time & he passed when I was a senior in high school. Rocked my world.
You are the best remember that
@@jennajune2101 I'm with you. Sure, there are a lot of laughs when Jerry and the rest give the backup guitarist crap, and Jerry's facial expressions, Sean comments, Laynes mess up, and just their humor they have. But... I always cry when I see it. Because such an amazing person died in front of us over time. And we will never see him live again.
How do you miss someone you never met? Crazy.
Alex, PLEASE do ALL of the songs from this live show... PLEASE PLEASE. I seriously, on bad nights, will sit and watch this live MTV unplugged. There's just something so beautiful about it.. it reminds me that I'm not the only one having a rough night and that tomorrow will be better.
Not a bad idea! The entire album is incredible. One of their best albums!!
Such a beautifully creepy performance. One of my favorites of all time! From a person whose college years were the earlymid 90s, this song is everything.
It’s the realest thing I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen it for 20 plus years and love every minute of it!
Favorite band ever
SAME!
FINALLY some more AIC!!!
Great reaction video. I really love your positive vibe. Thank you!
Its haunting but yet beautiful in it's own right. Love live AIC
Just some extra bit of info the bass guitarist of Alice in Chains Mike Inez, has this written on his bass guitar during this show - "Friends Don't Let Friends Get Friends Haircuts...". He and the band wanted to express disappointment about the fact that All 4 band members of Metallica got their haircut short. Long hair was and still is an unspoken symbol of metal music. Just some goofing around between bands during the 90s era.
It just occurred to me that the "friends haircut" is referring to the TV show Friends right?
Metallica was at the show. They could be seen laughing when the bass player revealed his handiwork. Lol
And that's partially why my son has hair past his shoulders and is mad as hell he can't get a Dimebag worthy beard.
@@chuleta1976 yes, chandler in season 3 to 5 to be specific. They thought Lars looked like him after the haircut.
@@mistymichele3771 hahahaha, I can feel his struggle. I never had long hair or a long beard. I literally had to convince people that I am a metalhead and not just a wannabe. lol
You should watch the full concert. Just do it for you, Laine is a crazy good singer
Yeah this crushed me. And it still does. It haunts me and always will!
RIP Layne. Even though you're gone, you're not fighting this battle alone. You've got an army behind you.
