Yoga Sutras 1.6 -1.7: The 5 Vrittis and Pramana

  • Patanjali introduces us to the 5 forms of mental fluctuations. As we come to understand what these 5 forms of vrttis are we are empowered to see where they show up in our own life. Further sutras will guide us as to what "to do" about them, which won't include judging them or punishing ourselves for having a busy mind!
    In Yoga Sutra 1.6, we are simply being informed as to the types of the vrttis. In Yoga Sutra 1.7, we learn what the first vrtti is and of what it is comprised, namely, Clear Perception or Right Understanding.
