  • Date: 11/4/20
    Location: Zimmerman Elementary Soccer Fields, Zimmerman, Minnesota
    Temp: 70°F
    Signal: 3 minute alert
    Units Heard:
    Federal Signal 500-AT (main unit) - 260ft
    Federal Signal 2001-130 - 0.5 miles
    Sentry 15V1T - 0.9 miles
    After North Hudson this morning, I ventured to the home of the 728 Cadets to hear my very first 500. This is one of only three 500s in the entire state of Minnesota, and is the only one of the three that is dual tone. The sirens in Sherburne County were set off about one minute early, and ran a full three minute test. This didn’t seem too loud, but I could definitely feel it. Although, it was still nothing in comparison to the 2001-130 earlier the same day. After the Sherburne County sirens shut off, you can hear Xcel Energy nuclear sirens in neighboring Wright County still going off, which were an impressive 8-10 miles away on average. There was almost no wind today, and the temperature conditions were just right, so that is likely why they were so clear. Thanks for watching, and enjoy.
    Sherburne County tests their siren system on the first Wednesday of every month at 1PM, weather permitting.

    The Chrysler-Bell Victory sirens of the early 1950s, were rated at 138 dB, and their sound could carry 25+ miles under the right atmospheric conditions!

    Sherburne has a siren like this? I had no clue. Guess I'm too used to Wright County being littered with 2001s.

    • @mnsirens
      @mnsirens  Před 3 lety

      Wright has a lot of sirens that aren’t 2001s, same with Sherburne to a lesser extent. The reason there are so many is because of Xcel Energy’s nuclear power station in Monticello, which has 2001-SRNs within a ten mile radius of the station.

      No, it’s currently licensed to operate until 2030. Xcel is looking to get the license extended to 2040 as of their most recent five year. It could shut down in the near future if something happens, but as of now, it will continue operating for the foreseeable future.

      This is a 9/12 500T, and this design was used from 1970 until the siren's discontinuation in 1981. So it's roughly 40-50 years old. The 10/12 500-SHTT uses the same shape but those are from the 1960's.

    • @SirensAndAlarmsOfNorthernIL
      @SirensAndAlarmsOfNorthernIL Před 11 měsíci

      This peaks like an Allertor but it sounds nothing like one. It is more raspy, with distinct overtones on the wind up/wind down. That’s the thing you get with Federal Signal 9/12 port chopper assemblies. ACA’s are just more punchy and don’t have overtones as they have a directional rotor
