Shocking Twist While Observing Octopus Behavior

  • Octopuses are solitary animals. They are not very good at sharing. They prefer to live alone in their dens. Even cases of cannibalism have been recorded by scientists.
    Experts, therefore, recommend keeping your pet octopuses separated at all times, each in its own aquarium.
    Nevertheless, we, here at OctolabTV, were very curious to see how octopuses would react if they were placed in the same aquarium. We wanted to record their reactions and analyze their behavior in order to decide if the octopus is, indeed, a lone wolf.
    As always, our main concern was the safety of our octopuses. For this reason, we placed a steady transparent divider in the middle of the observation tank. We left a small opening on the sides of the divider, merely big enough for an arm to squeeze through. Our goal was to give our octopuses the chance to interact by sensing one another with their suckers.
    We chose two of our most aggressive octopuses for this experiment. We transferred them to the observation tank, placing one on each side.
    We were ready to observe their reactions. We expected at least some aggression with lots of color changes. Nothing could prepare us for the amazing scenes that unraveled. We were astonished to witness our young octopuses slowly falling in love. The most surprising mating rituals took place and we're glad we can share this magical moment with all of you.

      Exactly anondecepticon! Octopus are not meant to be kept in captivity. No wild animal is for that matter but the human species think (cause we're the aggressive/selfish species) they have the right to pull it from its natural habitat so they/we can observe it. You know for the betterment of human kind; SMH.
      They may just be solitude animals but they need to do what they've always done in nature: to have sex & reproduce; then hit the road & roam free.
      That's why all those animals in zoo's are so sad; their natural processes have been halted by the oh so righteous human species. All their natural instincts have been stolen from them for the righteous aggressive/selfish human species.
      If that prawn was intruding on their sacred act; then we must all be perverts by that reasoning alone.
      That's my righteous rant as an aggressive & selfish human.

    after she lays the little ones and protects them, females usually die from starvation. Are you going to see if you provide food while she is tending the baby eggs if she will survive? It would be an experiment in itself to determine if mating and egg lay is terminal or if it is only circumstantial in nature?

      I am also very interested in the answer to this. And if hundreds of her eggs hatch what will become of the hatchlings. Octolab doesn’t have the resources I’m sure to add that many animals to the fold. So we risk the death of the mother and an uncertain future for any babies for what? A six minute video? Please answer this question for me- I understand that the females, after laying their eggs, will not eat, but rather spend 24/7 blowing fresh water over the eggs- failing to leave even to hunt for her food, and therefore won't eat. If she lays eggs in her aquarium, will she eat If she has food given to her? Have divers in the open sea ever offered food to females tending their eggs to prevent their death? I've wondered often about this. If octopus numbers in the wild are low, could man help out by feeding these sweet mamas?

    • @seddensky
      @seddensky Před 4 lety +21

      divers have offered food to an octopus tending to her eggs, and she wouldn't eat it. there are a few reasons for that: so that she can't be found by predators from any remains thrown outside her den after eating, or by the chemicals she produces after eating which is how certain species can detect her; and to not foul her den with waste. she's trying to keep the place as clean as possible, and she wouldn't leave her den to go outside which would expose her and the eggs to danger.
      also - not eating is not exactly the reason they die - it's more like they keep from having eggs until it's near the end of their (short) life.

      I'd like to see it backed up, but they die, regardless of age, after breeding.
      Males die after mating too.
      A very few species (found in the deep) can breed multiple times.

    • @angela.m
      @angela.m Před 4 lety +2

      @@TragoudistrosMPH I believe they use their mouth to tend to the eggs, so if they eat they would be forced to stop caring for their eggs which would most likely lead to the death of the babies, that's why they don't eat when they lay eggs. Once the babies are born, the mother is too weak to do anything and just dies, even if she wanted to look for food, she can't because she's just too exhausted
