  • 3 Strategic Decisions for every Operations Manager
Operations Strategy is about setting the core guiding principles for an operations function's overall approach and decision making to help contribute to the higher success of the organization. Done well, operations strategy can form an essential part of a business’s competitive advantage to stand out from the competition by focusing efforts to excel in certain key-areas of importance to its target customers.

Only after the overall business objectives and strategy have been defined, can each function begin to create and review its own strategy to align with it. This is where the operations leadership must begin their most important long-term thinking and strategic planning.
Whist the full topic of operations strategy would involve aligning with business strategy, market requirements and internal capabilities and resources, here we will look at 3 of the most fundamental and decisions that form the very essence of what an organisation is and does.
    1. What to do: Make vs Buy
    2. Where to do it
    3. How to compete

Surprised you don't mention ESG / environmental aspects as a crucial aspect of competing in the year 2021 and beyond?

Certainly a huge topic and growing in importance and urgency every month. How's your organisation working on it?

@@LaurenceGartside Thanks for responding. With the climate crisis looming and polls showing that consumers (in the UK and elsewhere) increasingly demand that companies provide products and services that contribute to the greater good, not just their own profits, It would be great to have this - important but admittedly very complex - subject picked up by operations experts / thought leaders like yourself. Like many companies, my own employer started addressing the issues in our industry with a mix of "we need to figure this out" and greenwashing... Your current video is all about competing successfully - thoughts on how to drive efficiencies (and, ultimately, stay relevant in the eyes of consumers) through new, sustainable ways of operating would be super interesting to see moving forward. Again, thank you for responding.
