  • The Wall Street Journal's Potomac Watch podcast features author Thomas Sowell, whose new book dissects the misconceptions that distort public understanding about differences among individuals and racial and other groups. It's great to hear from Dr. Sowell again at 93 who intellectually is as sharp as a tack. His many books over the years; should be required reading in all Universities, before a student could graduate. He has this uncanny ability to teach people how to think critically on just about any topic he chooses to write about. Thank you Dr. Sowell for your latest book and the wisdom you share with all who are open minded enough to hear you out.

Ambition or lack thereof can be learned through social circumstance but also due to developmental issues. Nature (DNA and selection) and nurture (nutrition, core family, religion) are both important in encouraging persons to strive for better. What is interesting is that Nurture can drive Nature (if your family has healthier habits, better living conditions due to life success you are likely to produce healthier children, and so on...).

@@kerwinbrown4180ummm..if I were you I would go back and read Sowell and actually comprehend what he is talking about. Sowell at no time addresses why some people lack ambition or whatever. Sowell uses empirical evidence to show that all these feel good govt policies and ideas have failed miserably no matter how good the policies sounded. He isn’t pontificating on psychological theories or whatever. He has been showing us for decades that the consequences of allowing politicians and race hustlers to decide how we think and what we should do about things. Take the minimum wage law for example. He has been showing for decades that the minimum wage law affects low income and minorities the most all while claiming that it’s the reason that unemployment isn’t worse….

Dr. Sowell is a national treasure. Why? Too many reasons to list here, but one of the most important ones, from my perspective, is that he’s more interested in uncovering the actual truth - be it ugly or not - and going to the root causes of socially-related economic topics/issues instead of going for the easy way out by scoring political points. Although he’s been like that his entire career, it’s even more important in contemporary times given so many journalists & authors take lower roads…
If all his works, “Conflicts of Vision” is certainly my favorite, but am looking forward to reading his latest offering.

The declaration declares that we are creatures made by a creator and he has given us unalienable rights. It is our duty to teach these rights to each other and to our children and to stand guard over those rights so that no government would encroach your trespass against the rights given us by providence. We have cast our creator out of the public Square and live our lives with no sense of duty we're obligation to the one that made us from nothing and gave us life liberty and the ability to pursue those things we think will make us happy. We stand by and watch the liberties of people being trampled upon by this government and say nothing We stand by and let this government take money from successful individuals and applaud that it's given to people who won't even try to work. We must take care of our own house and live responsibly before we can ever expect the officials in government to do the same.

@@bradlee2594 So the definition of "earn" is that someone richer than you felt like giving you money, but if they don't feel like it, then you didn't earn it? Seeing as how people can be born into wealth, I don't see how they're entitled to power and moral authority too.

@@dudermcdudeface3674 - Sorry, you lost me with your question - and entire comment. The quote I offered does not attempt to define the term, "earn". The term is used with the dictionary definition intact. Rich people earn their money or can be born into it. Regardless, social justice endeavors to take their money and give it to someone else and somehow is absolved of any form of greed. Conversely, social justice assigns greed to those who desire keeping THEIR own money. Of course, rich people will criticize this aspect of social justice. And rightly so.

I feel like Thomas Sowell isn't really making any criticism that doesn't apply equally well to his own work. He also seems to purposefully be ignoring establish correlations between birth circumstances and economic status as a way to legitimize well-worm and empty polemics. It's discouraging to see so many praise him for clarity and intelligence when he's repeating the same disproven points privileged people have been recycling for years. Important topics like this deserve substantial analysis, rather than this strawman performance art, and it's sad to see "smart people being dumb"--especially when they think they're pointing it out in others.
Anyone who takes him too seriously should really consider reading the arguments he mischaracterised here as they were presented by the authors.
I realize it's just the title of the book, but the use of the word "fallacy " like this is incorrect and contributes to the issue or words being so widely invoked they lose their meaning, which is ironic given his criticism of intellectuals and how he seems to not consider himself one.
That being said, Thomas Sowell is certain to attain enlightenment; and I don't mean to disparage him. Nam Myoho Renge Kyo

It’s funny… you wrote a lot of words but actually said a whole lot of nothing. Point to more specifics, have a more ‘substantive analysis’, clarify your own meaning (i.e. strawman performance art’, which seems to define the few paragraphs I read from you here more than anything Thomas Sowell is saying). You sound like one of those jealous intellectuals that can talk a convincing game, but has little true ability. Fascinating how you so willingly offered yourself up as an example of that trope here. I wonder if you even realized it… I mean no offense, it’s just an observation. You seem to be making a point, but yet, you made no point at all! Ah… academia. To succeed there one need only be skilled at the art of bullsh*t.
