Her face as the description went on was awesome. Slowly more and more hopeful
Laura is SO quick. She's the first to notice a few things like this over the course of both campaigns.
I love how out of game they automatically trusted her
She also knew the happy fun ball had the heart I'm it.
im confused, was that a reference to campaign 1? i havent seen it yet.
I love Matt’s look of resignation when he tells them the object is the Archmage’s Bane but they still refer to it as the Happy Fun Ball. DM feels
Well, he did succeed in one thing: They used to think the "Happy Fun Ball" was a troublesome device with challenges inside, but it didn't really rise to the level of "scary." Now? With a name like "the Archmages' Bane" paired with Allura's trepidation, they are _much_ more concerned and wary than they would have been. They now call it the "Happy Fun Ball" with much more irony than they would have before.
@@bigdream_dreambig the term ignorance is bliss comes to mind.
I mean im more suprised that they havent completely explored that. If it was my party we we would have gone in there like 500 times already and scooped up that MOUNTAIN of gold and been mega rich
It's really one of those in before things paired with a catchy descriptor. Deborah Ann Woll came in with that and it just stuck. It's also a side effect of the realism that Matt uses to embody. It's realistic for PCs to not intuitively grasp the name and nature of something they encounter instantly. Thus it's open to that in before effect.
Though I disagree with Big Dream that it's the ominous name thar has embodied the degree of fear and respect. That was more instilled by their first hand experiences with the initial trip through. Though I will say the naming convention certainly sets the stage and the tone for the episodes to follow.
It is what happens with Jester around. She tends to be too aloof to be smart. One reason i dont like her. Jester is too much of an issue on things
M9: We need a third party, some actual allies.
Matt: Say no more, I know someone...
*Allura enters the chat*
We all know what an amazing DM Matt is but I think this is one of the best examples of how to respond to your players I've seen yet from him. Not every DM has the time or energy to craft stories like Matt's, but listening to your players costs nothing but can easily be forgotten, running games is intense work after all
Calling in the crossover
I feel like this was a great response to Laura and Liam's recent Talks episode. Laura specifically said they don't have any allies like Gilmore or Allura that they can trust wholeheartedly. So they're constantly wary, constantly worried about being betrayed. I agree, this was a great example give the M9 some much needed hope.
Man I love how everyone on the show is as big a fan of the story and world Matt has made as we are. Like when Matt had Allura say her name my reaction was a similar freak out of excitement that the whole cast had
also, what an awesome compliment and show of love towards Matt's story telling and world. they were so super exited to meet someone familiar, and so was I. I honestly think that is probably the biggest compliment a DM can receive, if the players love your NPCs so much, they genuinely care for them
When Cad said to Essek "So we figured out that there are betrayers in both sides, I hope you're not one of them, if you are... this news probably won't get any further out of here then" while being scryed on was SUCH a power move.
I think Essik is loyal & honest. Hoping Matt won't disappoint me on this since I already lost Mollymauk. =/

Travis was the only person with the appropriate level of awe at Caleb's new homebrew spell and description. Widogast's Web of Fire is such a cool spell.
It's cool, but possibly slightly overpowered. Not sure yet. I think some numbers need to be crunched. While the raw numbers are similar to fireball, the fact that it can specifically target enemies, rather than an area, is quite significant. And then there's the fact that it can be used as a very powerful single-target nuke, as well. I don't think it's outrageous, but it might be better suited as a 5th-level spell, or have the damage slightly reduced.
@@jonathonbartos5420 I don't really agree. Yeah the damage is high for a 4th level spell, but you have to think of the fact that it's both A) fitting with his character, learning to control the fire and B) it is homebrew and if you think it's over powered then don't use it or change it if you do use it. As is I don't think it would need to be "nerfed" in anyways by reducing the damage or making it 5th level but if you want to use it in your games and you want to make it weaker then go ahead.
It’s also an example of Caleb owning his identity as Caleb, and making his own. This solidifies “Caleb Widogast” as his present, his future, and his legacy in a way Cat’s Ire just can’t.
I know some people might call it overpowered, but I think it plays perfectly with Caleb’s choices as a character. He does fire. He certainly must have been toying and experimenting with more effective means of “bending” a fireball or wall of fire. And the cat’s cradle component is a lovely reference, intended or not, to his limitless silver string used for alarm back in the day and, well, Frumpkin.
@@jonathonbartos5420 I don't think it's too bad. The spell can only run along the ground (So it can't hit flying enemies) and can't bypass obstacles higher than 5 feet. It's definitely powerful but I don't think it's game breaking.
@@jonathonbartos5420 I don't think it's nearly as powerful as it looks. 32 damage is a lot, but it's nothing outlandish and was probably close to the max he can do with it. Plus, you can get a save on it and halve the damage. I think it looked a lot more powerful than it is because it killed four enemies. However, the enemies weren't all that strong and didn't have a whole lot of health.

Beau: "Oh yeah! That *is* the last time we tried that!"

Laura on Talks this week: "the Mighty Nein don't have an Allura or Kima."
Matt: "I took that personally..."
I 100% think Matt used this episode and Allura to cheer up the cast and the Nein after having a few strings of losses in a row. The amount of joy the cast had and Matt’s little smile knowing how happy it made them. I love it.
Imagine if the M9 told the assistant to not call the ally (because of paranoia)
@@morphingninja Matt very specifically made it to where the goblin didn't ask for her name even though Jester said it several times. Was confused. Made sense a few seconds later with the slow gradual reveal.
I actually had a little tear when I watched it. I had no idea I was that attached to Allura's character.
Laura’s face when Allura arrived. So excited, Matt definitely did well by weaving her into the story.
On the Talks associated with this episode, Matt stated that he added Allura to the story for a few reasons, one of them being that the M9 have had a few intense sessions and it would be nice to introduce a familiar character to give some calm to the players before being thrust into more action.
This is one of those episodes that helps me appreciate Matt even more, as a fellow DM. He could tell that his players were starting to get ground down and needed some help. So he provided a less impact route, made sure that they were still in control of where they went, and still helped move the world story forward.
Yeah this is a masterclass in how to turn the mood of the party around.
Exactly. It's completely masterful. And had they not gone here, there are multiple ways that they could have ended up in a room within this dimension.
He also gave them a HUGE personal happy moment. That was truly Master Class.
He gave them exactly what they needed:
a huge boost in morale!
They've been on their own for a while... since the beginning really. And usually able to handle it. But now they feel in over their heads. All he did was remind M9 it is possible to have friends and trust.
Well played.
He hit every button to make them all fully reengage with the story, and they understood they could handle a lot as a team
I like to think that Allura is looking at the Mighty Nein's chaos and thinking: "Hmmm, they remind me of another group I know..."
I can imagine how they planned that shit sent waves of nostalgia. Just a big thought of 'oh god it's going to be vox machina all over again
I mean after all the group composes of a short mother figure, a person who will always make the dick joke, a very tall man with below average intelligence, a freshly-made paladin with no clue of what he's doing, a rebellious young woman with daddy issues who Will fuck you up, and a man fighting his demons and coming to terms with his past. overall I'd say it's close enough

My Goliath necro wizard has his in holsters on his belt.
I GM a game where one of my NPC's is a wiz / sorc with the criminal background who went on to become a statesman lol, but he has a fake spellbook and fake component pouch that he makes a point of visibly using - it's really a recipe book in code and spices fyi lol - but his real spellbook is a set of encoded tarot cards he made and his components are hidden through his outfit, for instance he has an cheap seeming ring with a hidden 50gp diamond against his skin for chromatic orb, etc
I discussed things with my Dm and he gave my war wizard tome warlock the same interdimensional space effect as a familiar or a pact weapon. So I copied spells from warlock to use as a wizard and have a protected spell book. Even if lost I can perform a ritual to receive a new one. Also having 11 cantrips is fun at lv 4
My wizards usually keep their spellbooks in a messenger bag worn cross-body, until they manage to get a Heward's Handy Haversack.
My current wizard also wears high-heeled boots with secret compartments that hold spellbook pages. She has Invisibility in one heel, and Knock in the other. If you're trapped without your spellbook, it seems likely that being able to open locks and hide really will will be handy. Matt is such a great DM! I’ll try not to spoil anything, but he really listened and observed the needs and stresses of his player, and responded to them really well! Giving them some breathing room to focus more this ep, an ally they can absolutely trust, and possibly giving hints to another possible ally that they can trust in the Dynasty with no worries.
YES YES YES! All of us viewers were feeling the stress and frustration, so we can only imagine how the players felt. This was so good of Matt, once again proving he is one of the best DMs out there, a lot of DMs wouldnt have cared to listen to their players. And even if it is a little metagame-y to trust Allura right from the get-go, I honestly dont care. I needed this, they needed this, and its so good to know that she is now a part of this campaign
I thought it was sweet that the cast was failing to stay in-character once Allura was reintroduced; the characters were so less suspicious and questioning of her, especially Calub, Fjord, and Bue lol.
But in all honesty, they really did needed an ally that they could trust. Essik isn’t quit there yet for them, and It was a bit heart breaking to see how sad the characters/cast were to not have someone they could rely on.

with any other DM I'd be yelling at the screen "oh sure, the DM self-insert NPC just comes in to get them back on track" but in that moment after the stress of the last 2 episodes the Nein really needed a friendly face to help point them in a direction they could make some progress.
