It would be pretty simple in rural areas just to not hit them. Oh but wait, dummies hit pine trees, oak trees, culverts, utility poles, other cars and trucks and pretty much anything. Fifty years ago an old person I knew said they just liked to hear them POP. They died a long miserable death, seriously.
They won’t in my neighborhood they go 80mph and run over turtles cats dogs probably chickens

I love turtles but I found one dead in the road and I also have saved a box turtle
As I have tried to rescue turtles I have had people look right at me and then swerve on purpose to hit the turtles.

I love box turtles. I have some that people tried to keep as pets and they didn't want them. I have had some of them for 30 years now. I think most people don't realize how long they live nor the care they require. I always try to help any kind and every turtle I see cross the road. Turtles are definitely my favorite animal.
@berk I've only kept them as pets because they were tamed and kept as pets. When those turtles were no longer wanted I took them as they really wouldn't do well in the wild. Some of them are ones that were injured by dogs and other things like cars so I took them to get their health back up.

I think it's because they're a territorial species, as coyote said, and that you can't really put them in one container.
