  • Tom Watters gives you a detailed explanation of the versatile, great-sounding CTP-3 CoolTube™ preamplifier that's featured in many of Takamine's higher-end guitars. The CTP-3 is the only preamp for acoustic guitar that has an actual vacuum tube - a 12AU7 dual-triode -- running at very low voltages, and providing amazingly warm, natural tone. The CTP-3 also offers extreme tone flexibility with 3-band EQ that features shelving filters for +/ 12dB on each frequency, plus semi-parametric midrange control, precise onboard tuning and more.

My first guitar with a cool tube preamp I still have.
Its funny I bought a TNV340 but the previous model was the same only without the CTP-1 (the ENV340) so they just stamped a "T" on the label inside the guitar and threw a CTP-1 in there.
When blended with a Takamine Triax soundhole humbucker, there is no better plugged in acoustic sound on the planet still to this day and I honestly believe we will go another 20 years before any other guitar manufacturer gets anywhere close to the sound you get from that combination.
If you are a gigging acoustic player, you owe it to yourself and your audience to get one so that you sound your absolute best at live shows

Any plans of making this in an outboard unit for use with other guitars. This would be a great addition to my guitar pedalboard if there was one.

Thanks but it would help if we could actually hear it in some demos.
As that is the main reason for it, right😏?

I still like the CTP-1 best of all. I am really pissed that Takamine doesn't import their high end guitars into the united states any longer.
I have one of the very first TNV340's that I adore, its the only gear I will never sell and that says a ton.
Especially since I can never get anything even close to it now that these higher end models dont make their way to the US

As a soon to be convert to Takamine, your comment "really pissed that Takamine doesn't import their high end guitars into the united states any longer" piqued my interest. Would you mind elaborating? I ask because I found a number of high-priced and beautiful Takamine guitars. Maye high-end does not equate to high-priced and beautiful.
      Thanks.

Not sure I see the value of the pitch control on the tuner-surely it would be quicker just to tune by ear? Or am I missing something? 🤔
Otherwise, I just bought a TC 132SC, and really like the electronics …. 😎

I own a Takamine EG523SC G series Jumbo, S/N 4432674. Having problems with its TK-40 preamp, as it's cutting in and out with volume at times. Someone told me it might be from corrosion inside the enclosed unit, or that the Volume pod needs cleaned. Also the framing surrounding where the preamp sits in the guitar, is made of plastic, and two small portions of it have broken off, just from taking the preamp in and out of the guitar. But I don't think that has anything to do with this problem of mine. SOOOO my Question is this ------will this CTP-3 fit my guitar? Frankly, in doing this research, I think Takamine does an awful and therefore, unacceptable job in this area, as to which preamps they sell out there, FIT which Takamine Guitars, series, models, etc. It might very well be my last Takamine purchase. It does seem that newer preamps for Takamine guitars have an easier method of changing batteries, right from the unit itself, therefore not requiring you to take the unit out of the guitar. Hopefully someone might have an answer for me, even if it's not from Takamine.

Good informative video. This does not process any type of alternate tuning on the fly does it? You said you can vary the pitch. I wasn't sure what you meant. I would probably have to run it through a Roland VG-99 or GP-10 (midi/synth) to accomplish that.

Does anyone know if this CTP-3 preamp is less noisy than the CTP-2 ? I bought a Takamine TC132SC recently with a CTP-2, and man is it noisy! The noise floor is too loud, and it's annoying.... Did the CTP-3 fix this issue?

It looks like it is a standby button. When you're taking a break from playing, standby will cut down the voltage going to the tube so it doesn't wear out as fast.

A green LED will start flashing to let you know the bettery level is getting low. This happens long before there's any degradation of the signal, giving you plenty of time to swap out new batteries.
