You dont acknowledge or identify any spirit or talk to them at all like he said he did after he was saved. What you do is continuously pray and talk to God, let God deal with them. I follow a traditional African tradition that evolved in Cuba based on the If a tradition of the Yoruba people of Nigeria. I can tell you for certain that our ancestors in Africa most definitely had not only spiritual practices, but profound spiritual philosophies just as deep as anything you find in christianity, Buddhism or Judaism. One of the major differences however is that for us, there is no devil. We as human beings posses both light and darkness within us. It is our responsibility to cultivate the light within us so that it is greater than the darkness. If you read the New Testament carefully, you will se that it mentions this principle. "That which I want to do I don't do, but that which I don't want to do I do". This is the battle with the element of duality within us. It takes work and dedication to develop good character. The other difference is that unlike christianity, we believe that we come to this World with a purpose nd responsibility to evolve the level of our consciousness. To that end we are placed in the circumstances we need to give us the opportunities to work out our weaknesses so that we can be elevated. If we do not achieve our goals, then we have to come back again. The principle of reincarnation is a part of Judaism as attested to the passage when Jesus asked who do people say I am and one of the disciples said some say you are Elijah come again. So they had this principle and many still do to this day. Now I know there are those who will say we are saved by grace, but the Bible also say's faith without works is dead and that we must work out our salvation. So from an African point t of view, there is no devil and there is no hell. We ourselves are both devil and angel. Which ever we feed the most is what becomes dominant. If you mess up, you will have to come back and compensate for what you did wrong. The other difference is that there is no notion of religious exclusivity. Since we believe that God appoints us to the circumstances we need to have, all religions have their validity. God hides from no one. So for us, there is no contradiction in being a traditionalist and a christian, or a muslim or any other tradition so long as you have a full grasp and understanding of both. It's just a matter of not being in a state of confusion. There are even times when a persons told that this tradition is not for them and they must instead go to a christian church, or islam or whatever else because that is their true path for the purpose they were born to fulfill.
I believe that the problem comes in because due to slavery a lot of the philosophical knowledge was lost leaving superstition to fill the vacuum. Also, in every tradition there are charlatans and manipulators. This is why we should never sheepishly follow anyone or put them on pedestals. Even if a person has a spiritual ability it doesn't mean they are necessarily of good character. So open your eyes, pay attention and don't be seduced by signs and wonders. No man is an object worthy of worship. So if you see someone with a cult of personality, wether obeah man, preacher man, pandit, rabbi, immam, run in the other direction.
