Mercedes Formula 1 driver George Russell has lost his Belgian Grand Prix win after his car was found to be underweight during post-race checks. And of course he's pretty mad about it. But could Mercedes have done anything at all to avoid this? Had the one-stop resulted in that much rubber loss of the tyres to the point his car got underweight? Or did he forget to pick up enough rubber on the cool-down lap due to the excitement?
Hamilton fought Checo, past LeClerc and drove brilliantly. He got the win he deserved.

Also if they say 10kgs costs then ~0.3 seconds per lap and he was theoretically slightly underweight the whole time, it may have given and taken the win from him. And if it was weight lost due to tire wear than another pitstop would’ve definitely cost him the race.

No mistake at all. Mercedez knew exactly what they were doing and kept it under wraps from Hamilton to favor Russell. But they were caught with their trousers down and that's why they are pissed.

So, I get it now. Mercedes tried to cheat the rule by only taking out enough fuel to meet the requirement, and not completely drain all the fuel which would cause the car to be under weight. So they knew that they were underweight. The only real question is, when did they know, did they know at the beginning of the race, because trying to blame it on tire wear doesn’t cut it!
Why call it superb race performance when we now have the facts that his car was lighter during the race. Am sorry to say that is obvious advantage for him during the race.

There was no cooldown ,because of the long lap length. Anyone who watched the race would have seen Russell cross the line then enter the pit exit. They need a fuel sample and most teams don't carry any spare fuel.

Russell was given free to use extra power to defend.
With good traction out of the crucial corners and with the same cars it's not easy to overtake. Max was lightyears ahead on qualifying but couldn't do much either during the race, same for Lando, and those 2 usually have very good race pace.
There was no point in taking the risk knowing plan 'B' was for Russell to be conveniently disqualified.
What would be interesting to know why Hamilton accelerated slower out of La Source than Russell on older tyres.Thats the reason why he couldn't overtake him down the Kemmel Straight. Probably only the guy responsible for the ECU could answer that.
Because Russell asked for more power, and they gave it him to defend by using his ERS out of T1 and T4-5. That's why Hamilton was upset.
Russell was making cleaner turns around La Source and Lewis always goes over the kerb, even on quali laps.
Or Hamilton knew he would still win either way.

Spa Francorchamps does not have a cool-down lap. It's a long lap, so they re-enter the Pit Lane from the exit end. Nobody 'picks up' much rubber in that short distance.
Mercedes forgot there is no cool down lap because the laps are over 7K long. This prevented Russell from picking up rubber marbles to add a little weight back, but I think the car would have still been slightly underweight.
They knew they were underweight because they left fuel in the car to make up the weight!
I think Russell was aware of this which was done to assist him in the race against his team mate because on this occasion he was out qualified.

Im a lH fan but 1 stop was russels call. To extemd his tires. Lewis went wgainst his gut feeling and came in on piwalls orders same as everyone else in the grand prix. Russel was adamant to extemd his stint. Which at the point he cpuld come in calculations said it was gonna be potentially p5 either way.
So he took a chamce and stayed out. Lewis could have done same but he didnt trust his gut
They tried to mitigate the risk to the team of having both drivers on a high risk strategy. It makes perfect sense. And George was more insistent that the strategy could work, Lewis had the option of doing the same and then they would have had to make a more difficult decision. But even if it didn't make perfect sense, their number one priority now when a decision has to be made between the two drivers should be with the guy who staying on the team next year. In that regard, Lewis made his bed, he has to sleep in it.
Why? Don’t they do that for Lewis whenever George is in front? George made the call for himself, and Lewis hadn’t
Mistake? More like cheating over the course of the race that 1.5kg less has a much bigger effect than people think. All Russel had to do was take the second pit stop and he likely wouldn't have been checked.
Plus to the best of my knowledge a set of fresh tyres were used in the second weighing to discount the effects of no cool down lap, the car was deliberately under weight and MB knew that.
MB did not contest the DQ because they knew they would have a lot of awkward questions to answer, pretty underhand of MB and toto
The advantages a loss of 1.5kg is insurmountable in these cars that every gram is scrutinized over. Why his tires deg was so good and why Lewis couldn’t close the gap. In all honesty looking at it Lewis was the faster driver even with the advantage Russell had.
It was only a technical breach .In race the car was running inside minimum weight . Once the fuel was taken out and reweighed inside it came up light . So he would not have had an on track advantage ,though it did break the dry weight regulation / So not cheating but engineering cock up . Why Toto looked like he was sucking lemons when he got a dream 1/2 .

Edit to add that 1.5kg means .05 faster lap time. What was the time difference between Lewis and Russell. I’ll let you look that up.
@@Uranswer-yu5kp The car passed minimum weight at the flag. Just not as dry weight . It's dry weight was illegal as fuel formed ballast. So in race he would have had no advantage as his car was inside the weight .....Go figure
@@nicholasholmes-siedle5119 but you don't know that, what if the car was running on an underweight chassis or some components installed were lighter than they should be, eg with the battery tech nowadays they could have substituted a lighter battery, Toto knew they were underweight they wanted George to take a second pair of tyres so that he didn't win and get weighed, they also pled no contest to avoid a deeper look at the car, thanks for the reply but given the evidence I'll stick with my opinion.
With all the personnel 'keeping an eye' on things, not one of them, even the strategists, didn't think about the 'deg' on the tyres, a subject that is talked about quite often. It is dumbfounding how this co.. up was able to ruin George's race win. He SO deserved to win the race, and what a magnificent race he drove.
Now you all can understand why Toto looked visibly unhappy with Russell's decision.

If a car did the 44 laps without a safety car deployment or VSC, etc., it would burn less fuel if it stopped twice rather than 0nce.
Going down the main straight at maximum speed consumes the most fuel during the lap at most tracks.
If Russell's car was setup for a two stop, three stint run, without disruption,
it is very possible that he could have used up that fuel on a 43 rather than a 42 full throttle front straight passes.
Russell now realizes he's done at Mercedes.

how can he be furious at Mercedes??? his car was 1.5 under weight than the regulation and 2 kg lighter than Hamiltons car, so if Mercedes made his car lighter than his teammates car purposely, that means they gave him the edge advantage (overall this 2kg would amount to 4-5 seconds advantage) so without this 4-5 seconds advantage i don't think he would have being able to win.
or if this weight loss was caused by using his tires longer than everyone, that would not still be solely Mercedes fault as he was the one wanted to follow the one stop strategy. as far is this ''cooling lap'' is concern as everyone is yapping about it, there is not cooling lap in spa. so his strategy was doomed from the get go.
i watched the race live, and you can clearly see toto was not as animated as his usual self when his drivers just finished 1-2. he knew there was something coming. (why else would they try to leave some fuel in the car trying to trick the FIA) i think Mercedes did not anticipated a win coming to the race but they wanted to give Russel the edge, Hamilton did great to put his car on the leading position and get out from the DRS zone in the early laps, his race was with Piastri in the third stint as he thought Russel had to stop (that was confirmed during his radio with his engineer), then Mercedes decided to go with the one stop strategy for Russel.
whether it be of the strategy or Mercedes making his car lighter purposefully, Russel has no reason to be mad at Mercedes, because both the scenarios give him an advantage. if we are to believe the email leak that reveals Mercedes are trying to sabotage Hamilton, this all make sense, so Russel should just sit back and enjoy it till it last.

Did he know that his car was lighter and was able to do more laps due to reduction in tire degradation?
Seems the best way to avoid this in the future is to weigh the car without tyres. If everybody has been getting around this by picking up rubber from the track, then surely everyone has been running underweight all this time.
Edit; upon further consideration perhaps all cars should be weighed, unfueled, and with no tyres BEFORE the race begins?
the regulation does not say without tyres. but they are weigh unfueled but Mercedes tried to leave some fuel in the tank and trick the FIA but that did not work. Mercedes knew.
the weight has nothing to do with the tires. That's a misdirection. It was the fuel left in at prior weigh in.

Surely they, Pirelli at least, that estimates the amount of rubber lost from the tires by going with the one stop strategy. I just like to know what this contributed to the 1.5 kilos they were short. But I don't hear that being discussed yet. And Toto hasn't said what mistake the team made.
In any event between now and the end of this season maybe the only opportunity that Lewis has to win races as at this point it seems pretty clear he is moving to an inferior team.
There was little to no long run tyre deg data on hard tyres owing to weather conditions & red flags in FP1 through FP3. Pirelli would NOT have that info as tyre deg per compound is determined by [1] compound construction (which Pirelli knows) and [2] up-to-date track abrasion conditions (which Pirelli doesn't know). Everyone, including Pirelli, did NOT have long run tyre deg data for the hard tyres on the 2024 Spa circuit.

Not sure the weight of Lewis, but he passed the weight check. Only 1 litre is needed for the fuel sample but a bit of a coincidence the car plus fuel magically was at 798.0kg on the dot. That's still not enough though if a litre of fuel is taken out.
The tank wasn't fully drained either but the wording was awkward imo and makes it sound like Merc didn't drain the fuel in the manner they declared. Not 100% on that though.
Was the car weighed with petrol, as it was raced?

Yeah, and the allowed underweight theshold is 0.00000%. It's like saying that RB shouldn't have been penalised for breaking budget cap, because it was marginal.
The underweight of 1.5Kg throughout the race at 0.3 seconds/lap advantage would give a 4.2 seconds advantage over the race. I think that would make him GR third without the underweight mistake.

Various factors impact on lap time but weight is significant. If the lap takes 2 minutes then 0.2% is over two tenths per lap gain. Even if you halve that and it was only a 50 lap race it still equates to a 5 second advantage at the end. Hamilton was only half a second behind at the line!
