I love cycling and have been interested in velomobiles for years. Usually when you see velomobiles they are in Germany and Europe almost never in America. I was was just perusing CZcams and was thrilled to see this coming out of my hometown here in OKC! Just down the street from me! Thanks for the story!
Perfect example of "Form Follows Function". The Pterovelo was the best looking velo I saw on ROAM both inside and out. This video is the best of all the velomobile videos I've seen too.
Velomobiles would be the basis of an awesome tri-mode transport system. 1. Road as a pedal/electric vehicle. 2. Micro rail system separated from the road traffic below, sort of like schweeb. The micro rail system can provide electricity for propulsion and charging the batteries. Pedalling (optional) can help save the rider on the electricity bill at the end. 3. Have "stations" with flight modules, petrol/electric hybrid multicopters that attach to the vehicle to ride on the "sky highway".
You are a big guy, a nice guy and this is a wonderfull vehicle!!!!! Congratulation, i would like to see it with some elactric capabilities! Thanks again! P.S. Everything is right and represents the future!
I love the concept and think it's great for city people. We just need infrastructure. If you live in an apartment building you have to park it somewhere. Maybe a special 'velomobile' parking lot. Electric motor assist is a must.
I got a chance to chat with Frans just before the Velo ride left Portland. He's a friendly, very approachable and friendly guy, and I wish him luck with his Velo building.
I have built one many years ago. With 48 gears, two derailleurs and double front chainwheel. They are very noisy inside, there is little ventilation so you get really hot. When a truck passes you, you can get blown off the road. You need good rear vision mirrors. Cops make you wear a helmet! They don't like crosswinds.
Nice video, thanks for sharing! Next time you see him, tell him to use Stans No Tubes tire sealant, never get another flat again! An ounce of the fluid is all he needs per tire.
I like the design and I could see someone electrifying it so you could go faster yet if you wanted too turn of the electric motor and ride if you wished, keeping you healthy, as its a one person system.
On the tv show How It's Made, a company makes Kevlar bicycle wheels, he should have used these when building this bike if he likes carbon fiber parts, etc.. At least it would never have an issue of a flat tire.
The only problem I see with the design is that, it rear view mirrors on the side for commuting on the sides of the road and for watching for incoming traffic from behind? Other than that.... how much does it cost, as I seen it on the velomobile sites as a possible option of purchase for a velomobile?
I'm half European and sometimes they come up with the wierdest ideas haha. I think he means a bicycle that is FAST not necessarily FLIES. But yeah, I thought maybe it was a Flying Bike too until I watched the video.
it would actually be really easy to incorporate solar power in this vehicle since it has a wide area to put it compared to another one manned slow electric vehicles.
I would love to have one of these! Ventilation wouldn't be too hard to do, before A/C was common in cars they all had fresh air ventilation that used ram air effect. If you could set up a dealer and financing network i think it would sell well, i would buy one but dont have $10k laying around, heck my car isnt worth a third of what this vehicle costs. Also, seeing that this a vehicle designed for road use, and not so much for recreation, it should be required to be registered and insured. This would remove some of the animosity that motorists direct toward cyclists if it is a daily driven commuter vehicle, sharing the road with cars, as this thing is big enough to require a whole lane. The savings in fuel and health benefits should be gloat worthy enough. It should have a windshield wiper for use in rainy weather if it is to be practical on the east coast. The heater is already there, the "engine" is in the passenger cabin :) It should also have brake lights, turn signals, headlights, speedometer/odometer and mirrors since it is a closed vehicle. Also, for the price, a 12v electrical system including a stereo would be the bees knees. I would much rather pay $15k for a velomobile equipped as above rather than 10k for a "bicycle in a can".
twoeightythreez Currently insurance for them is only offered in OR, WA and ID. Costs me $205 a year for complete coverage. Although why someone should be forced to pay the government to register it, has always seemed a weird idea to me.
Frans I love your video and the design seems elegant. Im a Velo wanna be owner... Have you sold your design to a company for mass production? Other people who are skeptics, this is the future. Lead, follow or build your own! send any info if your design is being made anywhere in North America. Ive been looking! Lou
Look at half the cars on the road and how much they cost. Most of the more efficient hybrids and electric cars still cost much more. And this is much better than any electric car
@@user-md3is4dq2d I think I was talking people who already have a car. They are not going to sell their cars to buy this thing which has barely any load carrying capacity.

Can these be Toured...can I do a loaded bicycle tour on a Velo mobiles . . .what is the cost for one that is not just a toy but a real vehicle I could travel cross-country in tent camping on my way...
Automakers couldn't even sell cars equipped with racing seat belts which have far better scientifically proven safety records than airbags. It makes getting in and out of cars far more difficult. I think there is a good reason why safety is over rated. As the safety features of cars greatly improve drivers become more confident and daring, making the public roads far more dangerous place for everyone else around. Why would anyone buy this now? Yes! It's inspiring and makes me think about the energy conservation but realistically I couldn't use that for any practical purposes other than using it for regular exercises at great risk to my own life and others. This is just an expensive go-cart project.
Hola, soy de Uruguay y me gusto mucho el video, quisiera saber como puedo adquirir una bisicleta como esa y cual es su costo? Saludos desde Uruguay amigos.
i have an idea for the pterovelo make it have sequential gears like a mountain bike. so you can go faster without pedaling as hard most of the time. and so you can get up hills.
Short term answer buy one. depends where you are most are manufactured in Europe or the UK although USA has it's market. Long term make one based on a recumbent bike. A little research will give you free plans and lots of information. Yes I do own one - I am 65 ans built it in 1989

I love the design of this velo... great looking lines and I like how the canopy opens and can be open while riding! Beautiful work Frans!
thank you for sharing! I like your enthusiasm, you did a fantastic job!
Loved the whole thing. Also liked very much the method for quick building prototype suspension.
Very pleasing design....great job !!!!!
congratulations -- very well done. Good to see you again, Frans, if only virtually.
The future is bright indeed! Efficient, safer and out of the weather. Thank you.
ERW is coming for Velomobile applications. New Speed records are coming as well.
With this current pandemic I don't really think so.

Very magnificent vehicle!
I loved your recumbent
Love the body style, and your protected from the sun

Next time I'm in OKC i would LOVE to see your Velo.
I fly sailplanes and im really interested in taking some sailplane technology into Velomobiles.
It closely resembles my vision of a commuter bike. One concern is storage capacity. Also parking, locking.

Thanks Paul, that's a pretty good price considering the cost of some top-end trikes.
this is awesome
Its not only a statement, best of all it just simply works !!
I want and need one right now. Please get back to us.
You've never heard of the Gossamer Condor I take it. Much to learn have you.

The Velomobile is very nice. Also very nice Velomobiles are built in Germany. My favorite is the Go One Evolution and is built by the Beyss brothers.

EXCELLENT!
Really cool design. Wonder how much effort to propel this compared to a typical bike.

25-30mph average speed. Thats VERY nice for a bicycle.
Lekker Man !!
wow. this is something id invest in. as long as it doesnt cost more than my car
How does the ventilation work? I would imagine that one would build up the heat very quickly in that enclosed cabin.
that was solved in most velomobiles, they have a hole at the front or on the bottom
and in some you can open it and close it using a lever
Awesome ....

I wonder if Loopwheels could work for suspension.
That guy is sitting on the stairs thinking
"shit... stairs"
It's cute, it's probably much faster than an ordinary bike, and you can carry stuff in it. I'd love to have one, but I doubt I could ever afford it.
nice bicycle
I wonder how it works in rain. And... do you know if someone already tried to build it for snow?
Man, that's fucking cool!
Will you change frt wheels to 20", or is that a bad idea?
what do you do about hills? and also, is there a storage area?
Is this available in UK? If so how much, and how long is the delivery time? How about putting out a vid giving a bit more info about it.
I want one!!!
loved!!! how much would cost to you to make another one to sell?
Sweet! Very well done and I like how the cockpit slides back for ventilation and access. How do you address visibility during rain?

It may run on biofuel, but I heard the emissions smell terrible.
How much does yo velo weigh? What tech have u used making body of yo velo (particularly transparent 2D curved parts)? Where can I see the design?

Dear Santa!
how about having solar panel body to make this electric cycle
You´re right. Cars should have a place too. But ELECTRIC Cars. Because they are clean and you have to ride near the cars exhaust.
What drive train are you using? Will this go into mass production? Price???

It doesn't appear to offer much cooling for the "engine". Don't you get a bit overheated after a long ride?
You can see his website at Pterovelo. His bike says made in the usa, but I thought he was from Europe.
nice
For your flat tire issue use green slime.
"feasible for everybody"

i dont think most cars design is optimal
they are made for cases when you go on a city to city trip or vacation
and not for daily commuting
if you need to go on a trip every week i understand
bu when you only need the max cap of your car once in a month or a few months
then this is a case of over-design
i mostly prefer to go downtown on my bicycle, even tho my family asks me to use a car, but i dont need it most of the time
few times where i need a car
a car running with empty passengers seats and trunk
is more costly for that trip
every mileage you use, is deduced from the car's value
and thus if you're running a huge car for a simple commute of a few miles then you're paying extra for what should be a cheap trip
i wont go into externalities like the effect of overdependence on the car for your health
not saying you should sell your car, but you dont need to run it for most of your trips
leave it in the garade for when you really need it
and alot of people have a big car for trips and a small car for city commute
you can keep only one for long vacation trips and use ebike/recumbent/velomobile for for city commuting
