  • The Old 68 GMC comes out of the woods for another Fire Season. Wasn't enough fuel in the tank for the pump to pick it up because of the grade it was parked on. A little purgin, starting fluid and 15 gallons of fuel later, it's ready to make more episodes!
    The 48 Brill turned out to be a 46. It's still here waiting for the transporter to take it to it's new home. I'll post the departure video when the time comes.

    I use to drive those old Detroit two strokes OTR, their was a standing joke that when you stop at a truck stop, you fill her up with oil, and check the fuel.

    First time I've seen a 6-71 in a butterfly-hood GMC of this vintage. Usually the butterfly-hoods had the 6V-53 while the heavier-duty tilt-hoods had the 6-71's or larger. Nice!!

    Greaat video, made me laugh! I've got a 73 Freightliner with a 318 and did get air in the fuel system a while back. Ended up pressurizing the fuel tank with compressed air from the TOP of the tank until fuel ran out of the return line. Reconnected the return and she fired right up.

  • @Brockway700
    @Brockway700 Před 13 lety

    Hooray for ether! What we do on some of the brockways when they are low on fuel is to lightly blow air into the tank with a compressor or something. That pressurizes it and boosts the fuel up to the filters. Just don't pressurize it too much or you can blow a weak tank.

    I had same truck with crane on it in NYC area. It was a old con Edison power truck. Really good rig. Motor loud and leaked oil normal for Detroit's. Watch blower seals or engine can run away. There is an emergency trap door shut down on blower. If it trips motor will never start even with either. Fixed many of these motors. Run straight 40w Delo oil in summer. Nice rig. DOT strict so you can't run these old rigs much without getting pulled into inspection .My buddie s have R model.Mack's from 1970s all over Brooklyn deliver heating oil. They are like new and rebuild. No computers or BS to fail.שלום

  • @goldduster318
    @goldduster318 Před 13 lety

    @ElderlyIron The 2-stroke Detroit Diesels all have superchargers - they don't run without them. Some have the turbochargers in addition to add performance. The supercharger doesn't run at very much pressure though.

  • @goldduster318
    @goldduster318 Před 13 lety

    @ElderlyIron Yeah...I think while it would be possible to add more boost with the supercharger - but it might mess up the idle characteristics, and create a lot of heat you can't easily dissipate. Worst case, you remove it and bolt it on a gas V8 and turn the wick up...after all, it is a 6-71 blower!

    @delmontcrusier
    Clutch cylinder is still bad. Bleeds off as you hold it, so you can't set at a stop with the pedal down. Just have to leave it in neutral until you're ready to put it in gear. Should just take a kit.

  • @ElderlyIron
    @ElderlyIron  Před 12 lety

    @NeilLB7
    Where did you see 3 cans? A two second shot with an intermittent spritz. Did you think I was just holding the button down? Ol' shagwan there thinks I did. Not a lot of compression left in that tired old Detroit. Even WITH fuel, if its below 50 degrees, all you'll get is a plume of raw diesel and a hot starter. Even after a 2 second shot, it's going to stall. Usually a second shot before it stays running on 4 cylinders. Has to be 100 degrees before you have all 6.

    the problem with them old detroits is they bust the top compression ring and wont start after that without either everytime with either you have to get it the first time or do this all day you get it going on the first puff that motor will never die

  • @ElderlyIron
    @ElderlyIron  Před 13 lety +1

    @goldduster318
    Back where I'm from the old Detroits are usually considered N/A even with the blower. Depends on who you're talking with. I always felt the term "non-turbo" was somewhat useless. If it doesn't have a turbo, then why mention it? :-)

  • @Gary198101
    @Gary198101 Před 8 lety

    On the 8V92N Detroit I have in a 1978 Fire Truck I pressurize the tank with an air hose and stay away from ether although it does not have glow plugs, I shy away from it, if you do use ether use small amounts. As it can cause serious damage to the engine. DO NOT use ether on engines with glow plugs or pre heaters.

  • @ElderlyIron
    @ElderlyIron  Před 13 lety

    It is, and so is the engine. Non-alcohol makes a better one-liner, though.

    like on an old car for a gas motor

  • @smpstech
    @smpstech Před 11 lety

    Glow Plugs do not aid in igniting the diesel, only in warming the metal in the block/head around the combustion chamber so they do not cool the compressed fuel/air mixture on the compression stroke, deterring ignition. Starting Fluid will ignite much hotter than diesel, which can cause your glow plugs to foul.

      These hydrants drain when turned off so that there is no water above the frost line. When opened, they must be fully seated to the top of the valve so that you are not applying continuous water pressure to the drain, washing out the ground beneath the stand pipe.
