THE JACKSON 5’s STRANGE YEAR 1 OF SUPERSTARDOM

  • Year one of the Jackson 5's rise to fame was abrupt and decisive. Once Joseph and the boys were invited to taste the good life at the Gordy mansion there was no turning back. There biggest stars of the day tell tales of that mystical magical "audition" in the spring of 1969. The Jackson 5 had already auditioned at the Hitsville studios in Detroit the previous summer. Berry was in Los Angeles.
March of the following year Berry Gordy invited the Boys and Joseph Jackson to come back. After all he had signed them. Everyone was there. Diana Ross (it was her Birthday), Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, the Tempting Temptations, the Four Tops et al. Michael Jackson always said he was born to be on stage. On this day when it mattered most he was fantastic. The brothers were on point. The Motown pantheon was charmed. But nothing comes easy.
Almost immediately there were issues with the contract. Claimants were coming in from all over. Chicago had a lot to do with the Jacksons rise and Chicago people wanted their due. Gary citizens like Gordon Keith came with contracts of there own. Even Atlantic records had a claim of ownership for the Jackson 5's talents.

I remember watching the J5 on Ed Sullivan. My mother bought me the ABC 123 45 (7" single) a year later. The adults were amazed at how Michael could emote grownup emotions thru his songs. Thank you for this wonderful series! OUTIM is still what I recommend to Prince fam, because of this type of story telling! Thriller Effect is a must for MJ fans! Actually, both are for everyone! 💜💜💜

I feel like this channel is where some of the greatest artists of our generation will spend their time. Had there been a channel like this about James Brown or Jackie Wilson, Michael would've obsessed and studied this channel religiously. Now we have this obscure info form a time period that is hardly discussed in Michael's life to study.
