Kobe Bryant: Defensive Doberman

  • The #8 Years.
    I needed to put clips of Kobe playing man-to-man defense against some of the best perimeter players of his era. It wasn't easy to track these clips down since most videos focus on highlights (blocks/steals), and I'm thankful to any and all whose clips were featured in this video.
    In any case, the focus of this video is on highlighting Kobe's prowess at excellent on-ball defense. Ball-pressure, active hands, close shot challenges etc. are a staple of his decorated Defensive Career (12x All-Defensive Team, 9x 1st Team Defense).
    Included are clips in which players managed to score despite Kobe's defense. The results of those plays (particularly considering the caliber players he faced) do not interest me as much as Kobe's hounding defensive efforts. I tried to keep offensive highlights to a minimum, as well as what I believe is more basic types of defense. People focus on stat-sheet stuff like Blocks/Steals, which ultimately do not account for this kind of defense and the impact it can have on the game.
    Kobe is one of the best perimeter defenders of all time for this reason: his on-ball defense is supreme by virtue of his quick feet/lateral agility, quick hands, long arms, strength, and most importantly, basketball IQ. Enjoy, and don't hesitate to pull this video when someone is acting ignorant about Kobe's defensive history.
    Finally, the "Doberman" nickname was earned during the Olympic run in 2008, in case you're wondering. Cheers.
    Disclaimer: I own none of these videos/clips/music. This mix is not meant to infringe upon anyone's copyrights. More specifically, this video is not/will not be used for any form of financial gains. It is purely for entertainment (educational) purposes.
    Instrumentals (by order of appearance):

    This video is very much needed. People forget how great of a defender kobe was in his prime. Even in 2013 at the age of 34 he was asked to guard kyrie irving westbrook curry cp3. His offense over shadows his all around game but people need to know how good he was defensively.

    rick kobe was on jordans level as far as a defensive player especially number 8 kobe in his prime u seen him guarding Jordan all throughout this video and shutting him down among other players.......ppl just don't wanna give kobe his credit as a defensive player cuss they wanna ride jordans shit so much.......ppl forget that kobe is a 9 time all defensive FIRST team member.

    • @MrTrojanRam
      @MrTrojanRam  Před 10 lety +8

      Relax my friend. While you're right that some MJ-Stans don't give Kobe enough credit, that isn't the case with all of them. Rick and I have had some good convos about the Jordan Kobe debate, and real fans respect both in equal measure.
      As far as defense, I think MJ had a clear edge off-ball, but on-ball they were essentially identical. That's what this video aims to show.

    • @jasonbourne1746
      @jasonbourne1746 Před 9 lety +6

      MrTrojanRam i agree. mj has his physique for his advantage, but i think in terms of "skills" to make up for the gap a little bit, kobe is underrated. he does a lot of things defenders dont do like use the off hand to throw the offensive players off. he also does defensive stutters and hesitations with his hands to get the offense to react into a trap. rarely do you ever see a defensive player guide his opponent like that at will

    • @MrTrojanRam
      @MrTrojanRam  Před 9 lety +13

      Jason Bourne Well you've got a heck of a voice on your side w/that one: Phil Jackson.
      He was asked if he agreed with the statement that "Kobe has better basketball skills than MJ." His response was: "He does."
      I agree as well. That isn't to say MJ wasn't skilled though. If I were to rate them, I'd say it's like:
      MJ: 97 Skill, 100 Athleticism
      Kobe: 100 Skill, 95 Athleticism.

    • @jasonbourne1746
      @jasonbourne1746 Před 9 lety +4

      MrTrojanRam that seems accurate. as athletic as kobe was in his prime, which was absolutely crazy, jordan himself ruled the air, and he was the first "complete player" in terms of skill sets being able to thrive in the perimeter, mid range, low post, and paint. i think Kobe was just able to refine MJ's skills and push it out to the perimeter as well as use it for rebounding passing and defending.

    • @DoUEvenLift
      @DoUEvenLift Před 9 lety +2

      Jason Bourne Agreed, I think what really set Jordan and Kobe apart though was
      A) Size: Jordan was just a bit bigger & stronger which helped him dominate smaller defenders and get better shots
      B) Decision making: Kobe's more talented than Jordan(more skilled, better footwork, better shooter etc.) but his shot selection and decision making has been questionable at times.
      C) Ability to make teammates better: Kobe's ability to elevate his teammates game(while being a talented passer) isn't on the level of many other top wing players of all time.

You realize when you say one on one defender that Kobe is only gaurding the best players in the game who are in control of the ball? He's smart and disrupts shots creates turnovers...and Kobe stealing the ball isn't like any other player stealing the ball because he is going to turn that into points. Re: Kobe ranking
    I cant give criteria according to your standards, but ill give you an idea. there isn't one concrete way to determine greatness on a 1-100 scale for me
    1. carrying a weak team to greatness despite injuries, poor cast, etc.
    (30%)
    2. even if you do have a stacked cast, carrying them when they disappear, injured, etc. (MJ scoring/assisting 50% of team points in 97 Finals for example), taking over Game 6 of 98 with Rodman getting lit up and Pippen injured
    (30% - pretty much same thing as number 1 so it overlaps %-wise, wont add up to 100%)
    3. great playoffs and finals performances >>>>>> regular season awards MVPs, DPOY, def teams, all star games, scoring/reb/assist titles, all time scoring/reb/assist list etc (a few rare exceptions with certain stats)
    (30%)
    Kobe 81 pts, but 1 pt in 2nd half Game 7 vs Suns for example
    4. regular season awards only matter if it carries over to the playoffs, which is why 2x MVP Karl Malone and Nash are not top 20 all time
    5. Defense weighs heavily, slightly more than offense (15%)
    6. level of competition beaten (10%)
    7. the more you do with less - the more impressive (e.g. less help on your team)
    8. stats = only matter if they help your team win. Wilt had a 22-30 playoff record in his 7 scoring title seasons - detrimental to his team success
    (there are other reasons why Wilt is better))
    9. championships = depend on how much you contributed, how well you performed, extra bonus if you do it with weaker support
    (15% combined for 7-8-9 )

    • @bermudacuba
      @bermudacuba Před 9 lety +1

      MrTrojanRam
      I'll start off with Hakeem
      - carried losers most of his entire career until 95
      - had to lead his team in 4/5 categories for 10 of his first 11 seasons
      (Lucas led the team in steals Hakeem's rookie season, but only played 40 games to Hakeem's 82, and only had a 0.1 higher average anyway)
      - carried Sampson to 86 Finals, past Magic/Kareem and Sampson never made the playoffs without Hakeem, and his starting guard Lucas kicked off for coke
      - Sampson = never made playoffs without Hakeem, riding the bench in 89 and 0 mins in 1st round does not count - Hakeem turned him into a WC champ
      I don't care how many times Hakeem lost in the first round. There is NO top 15 player in history that carried as many losers for as long a period of time as Hakeem, and in spite of that he is the ONLY one to do what he did in 1994 (get to that later)
      as proof of his weak cast = 1993 Hakeem led them in all 5 categories for the playoffs and shut down Shawn Kemp in 6 out of 7 games in the WCSF, yet they still lost
      Hakeem = the ONLY player in history to win a title with 0 all stars and 0 Hall of Famers while playing 4 playoff rounds in 1994.
      - Otis Thorpe was all star in 1992, when Hakeem missed 12 games (2-10 record) and they missed the playoffs, but not in 1994
      this is why his 1st rd exits do not matter. No other player in history won with 0 all stars or Hall of Famers even once, yet Hakeem did it after many years of having to suffering through it. Hakeem can't be discredited after having to suffer through years of mediocre teams, only to finally break through regardless when no one else has under those circumstances
      Hakeem = the ONLY player in history to lead his team in ALL FIVE categories for 4 playoff rounds in 1994
      1994 - beat HoF Drexler, Stock/Malone, Barkley / KJ (soon to be), Ewing with lockdown defenders Mason and Oakley
      1994 Finals = all his teammates scored less than Wade and Bosh in 2014 Finals... weak
      Top 3 scorers= 37%, 32%, and 42% FG - the only double digit scorers he had in the Finals
      Hakeems shut down Ewing in 6/7 games and won the title with the saving block in Game 6 and lock down on Ewing in Game 7
      1994 = arguably greatest run of all time, and definitely most well rounded run of all time (all 5 categories)
      No player in history carried losers to the title like Hakeem had to. If he played with a Kareem-esque cast like Oscar/Magic, DPOY Cooper, Hof coach Riley, Wilkes, MCadoo, Worthy he could break Russell's ring record. I am serious. If Hakeem played with multiple HoF he could have a great case to be the GOAT, but his weak casts held him back
      1995 = only player to lead a 6 seed team to the title, he had Drex who was 0-2 in the Finals without Hakeem, first season with Hakeem and he made him a champ
      Beat HoF Stock/Malone, KJ/Barkley, D-Rob/Rodman, and Shaq/Penny (who would be HoF if healthy)
      outscored Shaq every game of the Finals, game winner, Shaq 2x as many TO as Hakeem even tho Shaq still played well
      Dropped 35-13-5-1-4 on 56% vs MVP D-Rob and Rodman in 1995 WCF = 3 DPOY combined between them and got DESTROYED.
      D-Rob under 40% FG in 3 out of 6 games, under 47% in 4 out of 6 = as a guy who shot 53% in the reg season as MVP
      AMAZING Defense - only Russell and Hakeem are in that class
      Malone and Barkley also shot noticeably lower every time they played Hakeems interior D in the playoffs.
      Hakeem = beat EVERY great big of his era besides McHale
      - Shaq, D-Rob, Rodman, Ewing, Kareem, Malone x2, Barkley x2
      I cannot think of any other player who beat close to that many HoF bigs in their playoff career besides Russell beating Wilt x7
      or Bird beating Moses x3, Kareem, Hakeem/Sampson, Ewing
      Hakeem = had to beat 8 straight teams with 1+ HoF in 1994 and 1995 with a team of 0 all stars/Hall of Famers in 1994 and a 6 seed team in 1995
      Regular season accomplishments do not matter as much as playoffs, but here you go
      - Hakeem = only player with 200-200 steals blocks in a eason
      - Hakeem - closest to Quint-double in NBA history twice
      (38-17-6-7-12 + 28-19-5-9-11)
      - only player to lead his team in 4/5 categories for 10/11 first seasons - proof of how much of a load he had to carry
      - only player with MVP, DPOY, and Finals MVP in same season
      - all time 5 by 5 leader
      The meaning of Hakeem = wise
      Kobe = dumb

      1. McHale never led a team out of the first round. The only time he made it out the first round without Bird in 1992, Reggie Lewis was the Celtics' leader
      2. Robert Parish never led a team to the playoffs in his entire career. He never made the playoffs without Bird, unless he was a bench rider playing under 20 minutes a game
      3. Cedric Maxwell never made the playoffs without Bird. 1988 while averaging 4 mpg in the first round with Hakeem's Rockets is the only exception.
      4. Bird was clearly robbed of 1981 Finals MVP in favor of Maxwell when Bird became the only player to drop 15-15-7-2 in an NBA Finals, and nearly outrebounded prime 6x reb champ Moses Malone in the 1981 FInals
      5. Tiny Archibald was way past his prime and dropped 10-1-6 on 36% in the 1981 Finals. McHale dropped 5-3-1 on 39% in the 1981 Finals. So much for Bird needing a stacked team of Hall of Famers to carry him
      Bird turned losers into champions. Dennis Johnson is the exception, but he was not as great as his 1979 Finals MVP makes him out to be. He wasn't even the best player on his team for the season and playoffs, he and wasnt in his prime with Bird. and Bird won without DJ in 1981
      Walton was a role player in 1986 and Bird still made the most out of him
      Bird = only person to average 15-15-7-2 in an NBA Finals in 1981 on 42%.
      Bird = 27-14-4-2-1 on 48% in 1984 Finals, led all players in ppg, rpg, and spg
      Bird 1984 Playoffs = led his team in pts reb ast steals and FG% - only time in history
      Bird = averaged a triple double if you round up in 1986 Finals vs Rockets
      24-10-10, averaging 10 rebs against the twin towers and even with McHale/Parish on his team...legendary
      Even his losing efforts, his Finals were better than most of Kobe's
      1985 Finals - 24-9-5-2-1 on 45%
      1987 Finals - 24-10-6-1-1 on 46%
      Bird as a rookie- carried 2nd worst team to best record in the league
      - top 5 worst Defense to top 10 best defense thanks to his rebounding as a rookie - WITHOUT Parish/McHale/DJ
      Bird rebounding >>> Kobe's defense
      Bird = nearly out rebounded prime 6x reb champ Moses in 81 Finals
      Bird = out rebounded Kareem in 2/3 Finals (only time he didn't, he was playing injured in 85)
      Bird = out rebounded Sampson in 86 Finals
      Kobe = out rebounded by Chauncey Billups in 04
      Bird = beat way better teams such as Magic/Kareem Lakers, Bad Boy Pistons, Moses Rockets, Dr. J Sixers, Hakeem/Samps Rockets
      Bird = NEVER lost a playoff series if his team was healthy, aside from his rookie season
      and keep in mind Bird played with a broken back his last 4 seasons - we can only imagine what could have been even more

      Moses Malone = gangster, and as documented factual evidence proves, better than Kobe
      Moses = carried a 40-42 team with 0 all stars in 1981 to the NBA Finals...incredible. Calvin Murphy was at the end of his career
      1981 Rockets = not a top 10 defense or offense, but Moses carried them to the title. I do not think any other team has made the Finals without a top 10 Offense and without a top 10 Defense
      Unless you go back to the 50/60s I dont think you fill find any team with a losing record that made it to the Finals, and Moses did it
      and he beat real competition, not like 07 LeBron
      - Magic/Kareem (defending champ)
      - Gervin
      - pushed Celtics to 6 games
      - Moses shot poorly, but his entire team shoot worse than him so its understandable with the lack of help going against the stacked C's
      - None of Moses' teammates that played significant minutes (15+ mpg) shot better than 41.5%, with all but two of his teammates shooting under 40%.
      - still led every player in pts, rebs, and blocks
      Kobe's Finals teammates collectively shoot better than he does overall in Finals apperances
      Kobe= 333-808 .412% in 37 career finals games...
      teammates= 1009-2161...46% shooting...
      Dr. J = 0-3 NBA Finals record before the savior Moses joined him and took him to the promised land
      First year with Moses = 12-1 playoffs and sweep in the Finals over defending champ Magic/Kareem
      Moses = beat way better competition
      - 2-0 vs Magic/Kareem, outscored and outrebounded Kareem in both playoff meetings, and with a garbage team in 1981
      Moses = named after a prophet
      Kobe = named after beef

      Duncan = better than Kobe as the facts prove
      50+ wins in every season except the lockout which was on pace for 60 wins. EVERY SEASON. Duncan = never lower than a 50 win pace.... EVER EVER EVER
      Kobe = cant crack 50 wins without Shaq/Gasol
      and you cant bring up Pippen with MJ to counteract this point
      MJ = 32-12 without Pippen (0.727 win%) in 6 title seasons
      MJ = 36-9 (0.800 win%) without Rodman in 95/96 and 96/97
      Duncan = obviously bigger D impact seeing as he's a big
      1999 Finals = 27-14-2-1-2 on 54%
      2003 Finals = 24-17-5-1-5 on 50% near quadruple double in G6
      2005 Finals = beat the same team that destroyed Kobe and Shaq with Finals MVP
      2007 and 2014 - able to change his role to benefit the team
      even though he shot poor in 2007 he was a big reason LeBron had 36% shooting and 6 TO a game with his paint presence
      2014 = 90% shooting in Game 1, incredible
      Better defensively
      More consistent
      Able to win every season even with multiple roster changes
      better Finals performances on both ends

    Good effort Kobetard. The educated are not fooled though, under an hour of what is really avg defense, does not justify the 12 unworthy all defensive teams. Funnily enough i've seen all this before. Was hoping for better. Kobe was never able to dominate at both ends of the floor, one or the other. Ray Allen's defensive highlights would be just as impressive.

      Well when I get access to that NBA Vault I'll put out a much longer video. This was spliced from hours of footage as it was. I just picked the bigger names he owned on defense.
      Ray Allen though? Does your Kobe hatred have no limit?
      All I have to say is:
      _Clean_ Block on an MJ Fadeaway at 0:16 . Not to mention the *_balls_* to take on the assignment of guarding arguably the GOAT in just your _2nd Year_ as an 18-year-old Pro.
      If you can sit there with a straight face and say that plays/courage like that is "average," then sure, Kobe's defense is "average." Just don't think you can convince me or anyone else that you have a clue about the game of Basketball.
