Luv the clip and interview. Thanks
Thanks Travis.
More info coming through. Z-Wave plugs: USA: QNPL-001X16US. UK: QNPL-001X12UK. Really bad design putting the on/off on the side of the plug (UK).
Wonder if i can buy this in the US and then change the firmware to use in Europe. That will be awesome.
We need a good EU rotary dimmer switch. Is that on the roadmap?
Didn't you swap shelly firmware with Tasmota due to retain state issues with Shelly's implementation of MQTT? I'd be curious if you got to talk gripes on the little things they could improve! Love me some Shelly products but don't love ZWave :D
Yes. I did a couple years ago. I know they finally fixed this retain issue via mqtt.
Not a big fan of Zwave myself with the issues I had in the past. I am curious to try things again in my environment on the new 800 series chipsets to see if that makes all the difference.
The value in Z-wave or Zigbee really depends on the end users network make up, not what extra benefits it provides. Users with a primarily Zigbee network or an exclusively Zigbee network might have a worse off time with Zwave. Having that choice would be nice.
I don't use much Zwave myself, it would have been cool to get some Zigbee lineup devices but I'm fine with the WiFi versions and BLE based battery devices.
That dude is a giant 😄
I am just small 😎
Cool, i have a couple of their zwave products waiting for me in the post office. Can't wait to olay with them tomorrow.
Two things i didn't fully understand: he seemed to explain that with the 800 series zwave chip they can use the same hardware all across the queue and just change the frequency in the firmware settings, while with previous series like 500 it required different hardware. Why is that? He also seemed to indicate that the long range version is not ready in Europe. Any clue what he meant there?
From Silabs themsevles - "Currently, Z-Wave LR is only available for the US market however, the technical workgroup within the Z-Wave Alliance is evaluating and testing to ensure compliance and to be able to support Europe and APAC regions in the future."
I haven't dug into the technical aspects but they might have moved some RF filters/switches for 800mhz vs 900mhz internally to the Zwave chipset itself allowing companies to have one SKU for multiple countries to lower manufacturing costs.
@@digiblurDIY thanks! I installed the 2PM yesterday, so far it's working great. I also just installed the iblinds z-wave motor with solar panel for tilted blinds. Very expensive but a cool and unique product.
Shame that z-wave is struggling to compete with all the ZigBee, matter and WiFi products (I feel like not many new z-wave products are being made) as it truly is a superior technology.
I love ZWave so glad to see this... I know some have had issues with it, and prefer Zigbee/WiFi. I do agree that Shelly doesn't need Zigbee, as BT and WiFi are basically the same as Zigbee. if you have a good Zigbee network, you likely also have a good WiFi network :)
I get it for sure, especially with the Thread mess, I don't blame them for waiting to see how it plays out as they don't need another 2.4ghz radio SKU in their lineup.
Zwave in Australia id not that popular. Wifi and zigbee is what I buy. I have a few shelly devices and flashed tasmota onto them. Good hardware except to the tiny pinouts to flash them. It is good there is a OTA mongoose to Tasmota because of that reason.
I wish you had asked him about NTP. I find it very annoying that they haven't updated the original line's firmware to work with local servers, like the one in pfsense.
I am compiling together a list of questions as I have several others myself. I'll put this one on there.
Stopped using Shelly stuff years ago as I'm not keen on their privacy terms i.e. As soon as it sees their servers.... they know your shoe size.🤣 I'm waiting for the UK z-wave plug to be released. So far the prices are good for z-wave stuff in the UK but the firmware in terms of parameters not so much when it was Qubino. Too early to see what the quality is like thou.
You don't need to expose Shelly devices to the cloud at all, you don't even need the app for most of their devices to pair and use them on your network. Pretty cool design they have done with this to fit both crowds, cloud and non-cloud with the same product, they get it where many other companies fail in this aspect.
@@digiblurDIY There was a post on the Shelly FB page saying you can't get the firmware for gen 2 devices without using the app. This was ages ago, so it might have changed now.
if the bridge only works with cloud thats a major dealbreaker. i am not connecting my home automation to the internet, never ever.
I'd love to use Shelly stuff over Sonoff, but the need to use Wifi is a no-go. Zwave is a good start, although I'd prefer Zigbee, but require the use of an app for a pure local device is a big no. Why is that even a thing that needs to happen?
You don't need to use the app with their wifi devices and being zwave you can use them with other zwave hubs. The bridge is for people that don't have any other zwave options yet.
@@digiblurDIY sounded like he was saying the app would be needed for the zwave stuff. Perhaps I misheard though.
@-nepherim at first yes, if you want to use the zwave bridge with them. Supposedly it would have an open API to do local comms after it is released. If you already have a Zwave setup then you wouldn't need the bridge at all.
Can't require specific hubs be used, as zwave certification requires them to prove its z-wave compatible. that way ALL certified z-wave devices work together. Unlike Zigbee... why many networks with Aquara sensors have issues (they don't follow the zigbee standard 100%). Unfortunately that is also why z-wave devices tend to cost way more, 2-3x in many cases :( @@-nepherim
why does that guy talk like he is from another country.... and wear a red t shirt? :)
is he going to join the discord?
Shelly is an European company
He needs to grow out his hair too right?
And people wonder why CTOs aren’t good at sales…
