    Some days our flute tone is just not the same as other days. We lovingly refer to these days as bad tone days but they can be VERY frustrating. There are some great flute tone exercises that we can use to not only help on bad days but also develop and build our sound in the long run.

    For me, it's the vocalist exercises, because they draw on my experiences as a former choir singer.

    It is ABSOLUTELY amazing how this singing improves the tone! It surprises me each time ;-) I especially love the challenge to sing up the scale while playing down and vice versa. Great tips Tatiana, thank you so much!!

    Hi Ive recently subscribed to your channel. Recently taken up flute at 68. I already play alto sax, soprano sax and also guitar and drums.Been playing drums all my life.
    I bought a flute and within two weeks I am playing tunes already. Thank you for your help on tone and embouchure. I find it a little different to sax embouchure but ill persevere as lots of practice is going to win I'm sure. My tone isnt great yet but watching your videos im sure will help.Thank you so so much for your help.

    Can you talk about performing. I find that when I am performing I suddenly do not have as much air capacity and my embouchure and jaw get very tight. Obviously it is nerves, but it would be nice to hear what you do to put yourself into a more relaxed state of mind when performing. Thank you.

      It happens to me especially when doing a solo. I fixed it by breathing out through the diaphragm instead of from my mouth.

      The controlling the nerves is a problem. I find the best way to deal with it is to practice to the point of being very confident in my playing. Before I play I do some breathing exercises and say to myself....just like in the practice room. Go out on your platform and give the audience a big warm smile. Works like a dream. 😅

    thanks a lot! I'm a sax player and I could tell you at once hundreds of tone exercises for the sax. When I started learning the flute, the first thing I wanted to learn were tone exercises (because as a sax player the fingerings on the flute is certainly nothing you have to worry about). I took lessons with 4 teachers in my region, ALL of them told me they don't know anything about tone exercises. They said I had to practise classical etudes on and on. Someday my sound will get better.
    So - thanks a lot! These are exactly the exercises I was looking for!

    The note bending is great. And the long notes too. I am still trying to develop my breathing to a higher level and I practice going up and down holding a steady note with one controlled breath. I'm getting better. When I started to get that great power tone on the lower register I found I was going flat and sharp and my sound went all wrong.....which was due to my bad breathing technigue. I think. Also I am still training my emboucher. That takes time. But I'm getting there. Thank a bunch for your vids. 😊😊😊😊

    Hi I've been watching your video for 6 months. Since I've been watching your video, my skills have improved a lot!!!!! Also, I have joined the school orchestra for two years XD Actually I feel confused about how to play the solo line better and how to 'escape' from getting out of tune lmao It's difficult to play from D6 to G5 in a legato line(Yep it's a solo line), how can I practise about it? Thank you so much and looking forward to your next video!!!!!!!=)

    Hi! Do you adjust the head joint in and out, if so for what reason?

    • @cattymionepotter1939
      @cattymionepotter1939 Před 3 lety +4

      It is to adjust your pitch so it is used to tune your flute (roughly, the rest you have to do by rolling in/out, because there a a few nuances here and there depending on if you play loud or soft etc.). If you adjust the head joint and pull it out, it'll make the pitch go down (lower), because the instrument is longer then. If you put it in, the pitch is going to get sharper.
      If you have a good support and good tone developed, it should generally be out a few milimeters to get an A at the right pitch (442hz), that is how flutes are built :) Hope that helps! Try it out for yourself, maybe use a tuner and let me know when you have further questions :)

    I think you are a great teacher.
    I have played electric fiddle forever and a day... Played in many bands an night clubs... Love the sound of flute. I love your humor. Im sorry, but you are so cute. Are you still dabbling with viola? Any way, I was contemplating buying a flute. I saw a blue one. I like to play by ear with JBL speakers and u- Tube music. I follow your teaching.

      @@TheFlutePractice did I mention I have a 5 string violin w/ low "C" string...it is a viola and violin mixed on same same instrument. Also if you get an electric pick up for flute the reverb lingers to harmonize w/your self. But you need a amp and stomp peddles. Experiment...you already probably know.
