    I use mine for bathing and dishes. I actually planted 9 at the end of June and they are still going strong but they got worms eating them and not sure what can I spray them with to kill them. They have climbed up the pergola,over the trees and over the neighbors yard. There are a few gourds I will pick hopefully soon but definitely I’ll plant again next year. What I love the most is that they are a great source of food for the bees. And for that reason alone it’s worth growing them.

    Maybe they could be used as a first stage filter? Especially if you flatten them out. Not just water either. Oil, juices (like when making jelly) or something? Sure, there are easier ways but in a pinch! So, filter (first stage only) or strainer. Hmm.. Fish traps when sewn together. I know they'd do a good job cleaning out my stock tank! Speaking of stock... They'd be a great thing to help rid horses of dirt and shedding hair! (or cows ) And as you said, using them to scrub your clothes on a washboard too. LOTS of things. You are only limited to your imagination.

      @@PREPSTEADERS Thanks. I have the seeds but never have planted them. I'm going to for SURE now! OH and I've decided to try and sew them together (after maybe cutting them down the center, opening and flattening) to form a liner for my 55 gallon water barrels. They are placed under trees to help keep the water cooler. That means leaves and stuff in the barrels. Then every so often as needed, I can pull it out and dump. That saves the water but cleans the crud out. Hmm. Got my hamster busy spinning that wheel now! LOL OH! and the young leaves can be cooked and eaten and also as feed for goats, sheep, cattle and even horses! (yes, I looked that last part up.) God bless you and yours! Keep up the good work and word!

My idea is to fill or dip the loofah in wax and use as an emergency candle. It might make a comfortable house for a hummingbird in Spring after it hardens or fill with seed for a unique bird feeder. It reminds me a bit of how corn husks were used although loofah has those unique airy caverns.

    I dont think that would work too well for a shoe sole. I have made four and a half pairs of different pairs of shoes now so far the best shoe sole is diatomaceous earth and active carbon proto putty molded to desired shape and left to cure for 3 weeks. I think if it was where you wanted to use a found material tire treads would be a better option but then sewing them on would be tough and sealing your stitches so they dont wear would require pitch. Mabe that would help if you cut the loofah into strips and poured pitch or some other substance that would do the job to harden and toughen the loofah layer the loofah and compress it tightly till you have a shoe sole. I personally am going to look into different things but if other people like the loofahs and the bees like them I know a spot that is wet and sunny for them.

    Growing up, my family only ever used loofahs for our baths and showers. My mother insisted that we scrub our selves properly. Bath poofs seemed like a joke ("are you really going to get clean with that?"). To maximize body scrubbing power and ease of use, we'd split the loofa down the side so it opens up like a hotdog bun. Then we could sandwich a bar of soap in between and rub the two sides together to build up a good lather. The inside scrubs even better than the outside part.
    I feel silly though because until very recently I never knew that loofahs grew above ground. I thought they were sea sponges this whole time! Coincidentally, my housemate brought it up earlier last week before I watched this video.
    I haven't used a loofah in a while though, because I prefer the scrubbing gloves (too bad they're plastic).

    lol, I'd hang onto the sponges until my luffas are grown & processed. THEN get rid of all the fake stuff. Otherwise I won't have anything to scrub with until then!

    I think the shoe sole idea is great. I almost always wear extra insoles in my steel toe work shoes or my everyday shoes. If I ever grow and harvest these successfully, I'd love to try them as insole support. Sometimes I _really_ need new insoles and/or new shoes and my finances are too tight to spend $6 to $15 bucks on them. If these work as an insole supplement, that could get me by in a pinch or potentially save me $50 bucks a year on insoles.

    Bless your darling heart... love these programmes. Question, not sure if you have covered this but do you have recipe for making toothpaste? I refuse to use those from supermarkets that are basically poison. I do have one which consists of coconut oil+salt+bicarb. The oil seems to be glugging up my drain.

    • @rhero1
      @rhero1 Před 3 lety

      Yep. The oil will solidify when it hits cooler pipes. If it’s directly under the sink in the trap it’s not so hard to deal with. If it’s further down the line, big mess or money snaking the drain.
      I’ve heard people using peroxide and natural charcoal. I’d swap the oil for any water like liquid. Peroxide, alcohol or even plain water to make the paste.

    I’m thinking they might be good for air filters, water filters,helmet liners, musical instruments, evaporative cooler panels, knee pads,dessicants for food storage... still thinking.The main attraction is the good output and the low maintenance, as well as the amount of seeds. I can see it.Oh wait.. snowshoes!

    You are awesome... I am jealous that I never was granted the good fortune to have someone like you in my life... anyway, I am thinking custom pillows, especially in summer, just stuff as much or as little in a 100% cotton pillow sleeve, zip it shut...
